    FOLLOWING ON FROM THE VIDEO:
I wanted to include this in the video after the editing process but decided against it as it would be WAY too long otherwise
I just want to make it clear that I actually understand and see value in PR as a marketing strategy and think it holds an important place, however what I DO take issue with is this over the top almost wasteful packaging, the buying of opinions (like Tarte sending people more than just makeup that could potentially sway their reviews) and these huge brands sending out PR to every Tom, Dick and Harry. I also think some influencers (not all) seem to come off completely tone deaf and I think sometimes they forget the audience watching is the reason they are on camera unboxing 50+ packages a week and able to do amazing things like fly private to Bora Bora.
I also want to clarify I advocate for small businesses who send out products to a select few who are a good fit more than these large brands who send out these extravagant and sometimes unrelated packages to 100s with no real authentic alignment - it seems they are just essentially throwing out a huge net and hoping to catch some fish (I suppose because they have the money to do so)
I would love to see more change in the industry and brands slowing down on these extravagant PR packages, I understand in an ever growing competitive space they may feel like they need to outdo their competitors- call me naive but sometimes I think if a product is that amazing it will sell itself and a brand won’t need to resort to outlandish tactics (like my beloved Omnilux I rave about lol)
Anyway I wanted to clear that up incase maybe it wasn’t super clear in the video :)
Thankyou for watching! I know it was a long one- can’t wait to hear your thoughts xo

And the amount of PR and free trips and a BUTLER to influencers, while companies are putting FREE SAMPLES and bag tags and stickers and coupons and even past products that didn't sell well, in their Advent calendars that regular people pay their hard earned cash for is really disgusting.

To me, the fact that so many influencers are gifted designer bags and clothing just reminds me of how fake TikTok is. Like, it's easy to compare yourself and be like "I'm not doing as well as these other people because I don't have any designer bags, let alone this many", but knowing now that they're gifted so much, it's easier to be like, I don't actually want those and I am doing just fine. The only reason it's all over social media is marketing and fake demand, they're telling me I want something they didn't even want until a brand gave it to them.

There is no way I could afford any of these things they are pushing. What a life! Technically they don’t even have to work. They could push every product out there. I feel sorry for young girls who don’t have the “look” these girls have to push products. Let’s face it…..these companies only accept them if they are hot, sexy, gorgeous, full of personality and young. Thanks for opening up a bit more of my world. I don’t like these influencers. My apologies if there are any in here. I’m old.

The amount that brands spend on shipping alone is mind-boggling, not to even mention custom design fees, manufacturing, and everything else that goes into it. Influencer marketing is probably cheaper than traditional marketing (network TV ads, magazine ads, etc.), but while the authenticity of the influencer reviews and recommendations do resonate, the authenticity is lost with the PR hauls and big influencer trips.

Yes it is. Having an advertisement on TV during primetime can costs 10k a second or more depending on the channel and the event on tv. During the olympic games it will be more expensive then in between a random talkshow. Instead of 10k per second you can send 1000 big influencers some free goodies that will give your products a lot more exposure for a much lower cost.

As these people are flaunting their luxury vacations and so much PR they have to throw it away, I can't help but be reminded of so much poverty in so much of our world. The expense of that LaMer vanity box no doubt could feed an entire village for a month. I am currently reevaluating the content creators I watch and the brands that participate in this extravagance are ones I will no longer purchase from. Also, the luxury brands are being produced in the same factories often with the same materials the only thing is the profit is way more for the brand. I’m also in a point in time where I find these big logos tacky.
Regarding La Mere they play songs to the creams that’s why they’re so much more expensive. Keep all that in mind. But it’s just easier to listen to that voice that wants all that instead of the mindful approach of using and consuming what is good or less worse for you and the planet.

  • @VixVida

You mentioned enjoying skincare from a scientific perspective, and it's funny in Korea there's a law that protects the factory from needing to release their specific percentages of ingredients (not sure, but might be normal practice? I don't know the percentages of ingredients in Heinz ketchup.) But normal practice or not, the concept blew my mind.
I worked with a popular cosmetic company teaching as a freelancer. In a discussion of daily work tasks for the legal team, product names came up. The student’s job is to check existing product names and then after researching name their own product. It's not a brand name that they were researching, it's the subname (Brand: moisturizing renewal nighttime cream). The goal is to have a different subname than other products. And there is some legal restrictions of what is allowed (I don't know the details.)
I asked well than what differs from product to product? The discussion lead to the factory. As mentioned, factories in Korea are legally protected from disclosing specific ingredient amounts Basically the cosmetic company tells the factory what they want the skincare to do. The factory has a base formula and slightly change it based on the clients requests.
Using sunscreen as an example, the client can ask for a more oily product, color can be changed, they can add something like manuka honey (for extra costs), scent, and so on. So the legal name could be something like "BRAND: moisturizing sunscreen with manuka & coconut extract".
What blew me away even further is the fact that the base of the product is THE SAME ACROSS THE INDUSTRY. Korea is small, I'm assuming there's not a lot of cosmetic factories. So customers are paying extra for brand names and 0.000000000001% manuka extract in a beige coconut scented sunscreen.
The discussion went on to Chinese factories which have different rules and legal protection for a factory's ingredient details in base products. China has less restrictive laws. But the problem at the particular company I was working for was that they wanted to be able to say "made in Korea" however they also wanted a very specific ingredient that the Korean factory couldn't provide / didn't have to disclose percentage to the client. So they were looking into producing in China instead. Crazy.

Honestly, whenever I see these PR stunts I just think that if they didn't do it, the product cost to the consumer could be lower (because, let's be honest we are paying for all of that), and they could focus on developing the product. Also, as someone who tries to reduce waste as much as possible, I cannot support brands who do things like this. It's ridiculous, it's tone deaf, and like you said creates biased reviews.

I think you hit the nail on the head by saying this all feels tone-deaf. Like there is nothing remotely enticing to me about seeing content like this anymore. I noticed a huge shift in my perspective shortly before and *especially* during the pandemi to where I just started mass-unfollowing beauty influencers who once felt at least moderately relatable and honestly stopped watching YT altogether because the overconsumption alone just felt...gross. I'm just not impressed by brands when they do these exorbitant trips with hundreds or thousands of "free gifts" leading up to them or the PR boxes filled with entire lines of FULL-SIZED products. It feels so very bribey and so very pre-French Revolution to me lol Like we're barely affording literal bread out here. The ick this gives me is monumental.

I just think about the implications of this crap on the teens and tweens that are growing up consuming this content. I don't want them to think that this is the norm or an indication of someone's worth or the value of their productivity, and that something is wrong with them because they may not ever have this level of nice, designer, elite brand things.

They didn't feel comfortable anymore due the over consumption and all the clutter. There is only so much you can keep yourself, give to your friends or charity. So I thought this trend did die a bit by now but it seems it didn't. And honestly those brand trips and PR packages kind of makes me so angry. It always makes me think instead of giving over the top gifts and free trips to a select group of people you could also make your products a bit cheaper so more people can actually afford them and enjoy them too. Seeing the mountain of stuff in these videos stresses me out. I haven’t watch these kinds of creators since like 2015/16, and I had no idea it has gotten this bad.
Also, not really for cosmetics, but whenever there has been a big gifting campaign from luxury brands my view of that brand goes down. Gifting some makeup is one thing, but a whole bag?? That would cost consumers at least 1.5k and over to buy?? Feels really strange.

I’m with you on feeling like the value of something a brand likes to gift to other people is diminished. When I see expensive merchandise given to people who don’t need it, I feel resentful. on the other hand, I enjoy seeing people receive gifts that aren’t as accustomed to it or for whom the gift is genuinely a good match. I never going to be a person that brands gives things to for free. I don’t like to think that my purchases are subsidizing those freebies to these influencers.

Caitlin you’re right. I’m 33 now and I could care less. Who needs all this just to give it away??? I’ve got better things to do with my time

When you hear so much about the allegation against Dior etc, imagine if the people who made the clothing were paid fairly instead of giving so much free stuff to influencers.
I get it can be cheaper to gift to a few influencers than a TV commercial. However, I don't want to pay a premium for products, to fund influencer lifestyles.
Then the sheer about of plastic wastage, is hardly good for the old environment.

25:43 'I love you' about every brand is kiling me, surely that devalues it so much. No review beyond the aesthetic , no asmr or 'satisfaction' style unboxing just powering through like a kid on christmas who ate all their sweets before tearing into the boxes

I loved this video and would like to see a video on the issue that you mentioned towards the end. I am too old (45) for tiktok and watching that sh*te, it just irritates me. There is so much waste and a great example of how we are killing the planet. I would like to know how many of these brands actually fail or succeed. I am assuming they send out so many products to multiple influencers to actually get into the marketplace?
It also makes me feel terrified for my kids who are 6 and 8. The crap that they already watch on UA-cam (Mr. Beast, etc) is awful, and they are exposed to so much. It isn't the real world, but try explaining that to kids who don't know any different (but know it all and have zero understanding of money 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️). It is a real struggle and worry ❤

personally whenever i watch unboxings all i can think of is how much waste is being created. every time i get a delivery it bothers me that there's so much cardboard and/or plastic that i have to dispose of and i always wish there was a way i could return some of the packaging to be reused or honestly just march up to the factory, buy the thing i need/want to use, and leave without anything i need to throw away. and that bothers me even with my one package every two or three weeks because even though it's not that much stuff it's still packaging that needs to be disposed of. seeing the piles and piles of boxes in these unboxing videos makes me nauseous

Is this why things are so expensive? Because they need huge marketing budgets to send these crazy PR boxes to influencers.

I'm well past the age that these influencers are trying to appeal to, and while I enjoy a well made product (even a luxury one), I despise this kind of consumerism and waste that we see in these PR unboxings. When I comes to my cosmetics and skin care, influencers and these brand product dumps have zero impact on my buying habits. I've reached the point that I am as likely to buy a drugstore brand as I am a luxury band. As far as the designer bags and clothing, I no longer choose to pay for the privilege of being a walking advertisement for these brands so nothing I own have anything more than a discrete logo. My favorite bag is one that I bought from a craftsman in Spain and I've had it for over 10 years. Glad that my shopping habits were established well before the age of social media.

I completely agree with your take. The waste is astronomical. (I loved the little interstitial videos that you used. So funny! "What if we speed it up?!")

100% agree, when I see rich people getting stuff for me it loses its value since why pay for it when someone got it for free 💀
