As an American I don't know much about Norway's second biggest city of Bergen. Today I am very interested in continuing to learn about some of the lesser know gems and landmarks in Bergen, that only locals know about. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!
I'm from Seattle, now living in Norway. In the Scandinavian part of Seattle, Ballard, you'll find Bergen Place, a small park. I got to meet some of the people involved in the sister cities program many years ago. Even had dinner with the a former mayor of Seattle and local Bergen officials in Bergen.
Hey, those green signs to Stolzekleiven were made by me! Well, me and my co-workers at A2G. 😊
I would not suggest that you go down the same way. Although there clearly aren't any actual rules against it, it puts you in conflict with the people who time themselves running upwards. They'll give you grumpy faces for forcing them to stop and let you pass. 😊 You could walk down at Skredderdalen, or walk to the Fløyen station and take the Funicular down. It's mostly flat, so it's just a nice stroll.
I would not call the places he list obscure. They are all well known to us who live here, and most are listed in tourist guides.
Fun facts. Those first medieval, cobbeled streets you see in the video are especially made for horses and wagons. You can see the "stripe" in the middle of the street. It's for traction for the horses. 😄❤️🇧🇻 And since Bergen is almost 1000 yrs old, we have a lot of old architecture from the middle age. The totem - pole you saw (is from Seattle, Washington yes) represents the place where the last witch was burned in Norway. And those beautiful stone paths you see in the mountains are built by Sherpa - people from the Himalayas. The chocolate he is eating on Stoltzen - Freia Milk Chocolate has the catchfrase "A little piece of Norway" and is like a staple item you have on hikes here (that or Kvikk Lunch). Yes! We ALWAYS bring chocolate on hikes or when we go skiing. Thank you so much for representing our beautiful city in such a great way. (And pardon for my mangled english - it's not my first language 😂.) 🙏❤️
We defenetly love chocolate on hikes. Gives you energy.
So impressed that you picked up on the wrong chocolate. Yes, we are supposed to bring Kvikklunsj, orange, sandwiches, coffee and what ever cold you like to drink.
Kvikklunsj used to be this very traditional Norwegian snack. Typically for shorter hikes in nature. But it lost its charm for me after it was sold off to Chicago based Kraft Foods/Mondelẽz who I think also changed the recipe. It's more gooey/muchy/sluggish/sweaty now. Not as good and crisp quality as in the 80s when I was first introdused to it. They've also replaced the silver paper wrapping around it to air tight plastic. Just not the same anymore!
It's sherpa's from Nepal that made the stonetrail🌞
Yes, some of them. They did an upgrade of the track in 2011. It's a bit embarrasing that Norwegians couldn't do this ourselves. But I guess hiring sherpas was both cheaper and more quality assured.
I don't know if anybody sees my comments, but these videos are getting my mind off my back pain. Thank you, Tyler.
Scotland here. Hope your back is better soon. Back pain is miserable 😘
Tyler you are rather ignorant by not responding to comments at all . These comments people have taken the time to respond to your reactions or do you not like constructive criticism. Also can you find your memory because you have the memory of a goldfish.
Ha-ha-ha! 😄. So true. But dont be made at Tyler. Nobody else in the world even know there are something called " No(r)Way". Under different alias he also reacts to the UK, Canada, and Japan . Tyler is always, positive, polite and friendly. Give him a like, like i always do. He deserves that. If you would like i strongly recommend the UA-camr "Lauren in Germany". She is a great singer and have made a very good travel vlog from Norway as well. Lauren ALWAYS reply and give out a heart
And a like to her subscribers. She has recently recorded " Solveig's song" by Edward Grieg and i hope she will publish it on one of her channels soon.
@@hansmarheim7620
When did he start reacting to Japan??
It used to be UK, Canada and Norway
@@mari97216 Long time ago. He use the alias Tyler hamburger, i think. But unlike us stupid Norwegians the Japanese did not give him much feedback. Being a UA-camr is not easy. Tyler present Norway and other countries in a positive way. Why and how should he have the time to react to all the comments he get??? Leave the man alone. He is doing something positive for Norway.
Well, several towns in Norway have and old-town district. My favourit is actually Stavanger's "Gamle Stavanger" (Old Stavanger).
My favorite is old Røros. 😎
Oh nice! I'll skip by next time I'm summer hiking!
Tyler, you have to see the bicycle tunnel in Bergen🌞The guy in this film is from Oslo by the way😅Yes we have sjokolade on hikes😅
He already has a video of it, the one in Fyllingsdalen next to bybanen.
He already did, about half a year ago or so.
Bergen is surrounded by 7 mountains that's why its officially the most rainiest city in europe 💀
The hike is quite tough, because of the stairs lol
Kvikk-Lunsj is an iconic hike chocolate, however, it is easter that is the period when hiking that you "always" have a kvikk-lunsj. In general, chocolate and nuts is very good to have when doing physical activities like hiking as you can recover energy quickly. Minor amounts of it in a otherwise ok diet is insignificant. And depending on the physical exertion, minor amounts is relative and could be a lot more than what they are having there.
The citizens response to the gift of Seattle:
- “Thank you very much for the nice totem pole”.
Best part of Bergen are the nature around. Bergen is called the city between the 7 mountains. And every year there are dozens of people rescued by helicopter from the summits surrounding it.
2:16 I've been told that the Dark Area in the middle of the street,is a left over from the old days, when they had horses. The horses used to pull heavy carts up those streets, and the dark area was used for them to get a better footing
This is what you get when there is houndreds of years of culture.
You find cities with old parts still intact all over Europe.
Life back in the day was not black and white as in the movies.
Old buildings in Bergen have to have certain coulors and needs to be approved by local government and they are really strict. These houses are protected.
You will find simular places around Norway.
Fun fact: You see the stones in the midle of the street is faced with the edge up. That is because horses pulling stuff would slide on flat stones and need grip. So did people with carts.
If you noticed the dark 'row' down/up n the old streets at the start of this video? (as in for the steep hills)... While I couldn't see for sure (and I'm embarassed to say I've no idea if I've been in the Cort Piil smauet or not) (I live in Bergen)... those are often different and shaped like a sort of stair to help horses walk up the hills in winter. ... And Bergen is the city between 7 mountains (I think the 7 mountain trip was today (yes it was).. As in a lot of people from Bergen hike to the top of all the 7 official main mountains (.. said mountains are also why my city is known for its rain) in a single day (there's a 3 or 4 mountain hike as well for those who doesn't want or that can't do all 7). (its a once a year event that takes about 10 hours... never done it myself. Mount Ulrikken and Mount Fløyen are two of said mountains (I've been up both many times.. and to rundemannen as well nowhere near as much... and I really should walk up to Lyderhorn.. if only because I've got a direct view from my apartment and have never been up there) and you've seen both mount Ulrikken and mount Fløyen in videos (theres the fløibanen and ulriksbanen you can take up to the top). .. I've heard that some people run up stolzekleiven in 12 minutes.. but I might be mistaken. I've taken the long way 'round but never actually gone up said stairs. The 'kvikklunsj' (and an orange) is pretty much a must for winter ski trips (and during easter most of all)... The 'freia melkesjokolade' though is rather epic in terms of how well its known (Norwegian chocolate has a pretty high quality in general. ... and even the cheap brands (which freia melkesjokolade is.. and you can find it pretty much everywhere any kind of candy is sold (if you buy 'tiny candy' ('select your own' types).. the chocolate is usually various types of freia). ) is something we can be proud of.
That is the benefit of the west of Norway... nature and mountains is normally pretty close wherever we are. There might be asphalt and stuff at the start.. but if one does want to hike in nature... there's plenty of options within a reasonable distance. My sister moved to Oslo and she misses all the options for hiking and how close such is here. ... I'm rather spoiled for choice myself even if I've also got asphalt for at least part of the roads (far more than where I lived before... but oh well)). Never mind that I live a 15 minute bus ride from the bus station/city centre (10 minutes from 'festplassen').. and it feels like a completely different part of Bergen (cause it is). .. In Oslo I travelled on the rail for 30 + minutes and it barely felt like I'd moved at all. .. Because unlike in Oslo there are a lot of differences and variety in the landscape, how people live, how close nature is (or how urban it feels) and so on (Oslo is far better in terms of restaurants, culture and so on... but Bergen does have its advantages as well)... And also that each part of bergen (the city centre, Loddefjord, Åsane, Fana, laksevåg+) feels like separate cities instead of one big city..
We do, indeed, live in those hills. I can see my flat from the old Sardine factory! My grandmother worked at that factory when she was young btw. You should come visit Bergen some time 😊 Lots of history and pretty sights.
We actually do bring chocolate with us on hikes. We don’t take the hikes just for physical health benefits. Also mental health benefits and chocolate helps as a nice reward. It also gives us energy. Its good for the soul :-)
Hot chocolate is also popular on winter hikes.
8:29
Not a river, that's the sea.
15:55
Normal, our uneven terrain really can lower your blood sugar.
And as long as you don't eat it in excess it can actually be really useful.
Remember that we don't necessarily have quite as much sugar in ours.
And it's popular with tjings like nuts or fruit in our chocolates.
Yes, we eat chocolate on hikes 😁
That is when you actually need the extra energy and calories, not when you sit on the coach.
En av beboerne ved fløyen fikk laget dører som de var på 1100tallet.Kostet sikkert mye penger, men viktig for de🌞
15:45 It is not a joke. The kvik lunch most often come out on the easter hikes.
I climbed that totem-pole a bunch of times when I was a kid :)
I see you have a disc golf basket in the background. The Norwegian scene is on the rise. You should check out (maybe react) to the Norwegian Disc golf Scene! Krokhol disc golf course right outside Oslo was just voted the worlds best disc golf course!! it is amazing
Love your vids, Cheers from Norway!!
I can easily picture you biking near the sea.
Yes. We defiantly eat chocolate on hikes, yes.
when i was i little one with cloth diapers i had my first trip up the "kleiven" in a "bæremeis", im so glad to see the path has been secured so so so much since then.
freia isnt what it was before mondolez bought them. it now is no good anymore, i found that nidar now makes the best chocolate.
Seriously; Bergen is not Norway. Bergen is more like an independent Republic inside Norway. The only great thing i can think about when it comes to Bergen, is Sissel. Shes great.
😂
😂
You should look into Rallarvegen, that's like a really really long hike 👀
I have walked it before, it was amazing, and I f hate the outside world lololol xD
( in Norway obviously lol )
The best city in Norway
in the city center most of the streets look like that
My hometown 😊
Im from Bergen :)
Chokolade is fast energi when you are tired
Fast karbs is important on hikes , sjokolade is nr 1. good to go.
My hometown😃
I live here. :)
Stoltzekleiven is probably to more boring hikes to do in Bergen. It's basically mostly steps and no good views. Much more rewarding to go up Skredderdalen, take the Vidden tour form Fløyen to Ulriken or up to the top of Løvstakken.
Skiing and hiking we eat chocolate because it is a good source of quick energy and sugar = top up your energy
It helps that’s it’s delicious too.
The only time it makes sense to eat refined carbohydrates is during physical activity...
Bergen, the city between the 7 mountains.
Why does he append "street" to the street names...
....smauet translation into "narrow street".
Because he's not Norwegian and doesn't know????? Anyone who doesn't speak Norwegian would probably make this error.
Like saying "ATM machine" even though the M stands for "machine."
@@5GburnPål is from Norway, and should know very Wellington how to say it.
In my opinions, lots of narrower streets are more beautiful than those shown in this video.
Try visit Røros
THIS NOT ONLY IN NORWAY ,YOU HAVE N'T SEEN THE HALF OF IT YET THE HOLE OF EUROPE IS FULLOF HISTORIC BUILDINGS.
I couldn't hear you, speak louder.
Hey! I’m from Norway stavern/larvik and I would love to see you react to my place (stavern)❤
ha, I guessed it right
So Tyler doesnt know what a totem pole is.? Thats telling me a lot about how America doesnt like to tell anyone about their own history.
Totem poles are from your native people and came as a part of US history here. We always see totem poles in our heards when we think about the real America. No Indians without a totem pole to tie someone to. They probably never did that as it was a depiction of their gods. So Manitou as you always heard in westerns just means spirit. But in westerns they always talked about Manitou like it was a specific god. And the totem was always in there.. In fact i seem to remember totem poles in most stories that Disney did with native Indians in them. Peter Pan for example. So you as an American should know more about Totem poles than a scandi. But as you are you. You as always never do.. 😕
Bergen was a pirates city~ check it Bro
Bergen is alright for a weekend. But trust me, the climate there isn't worth it. So fricking much rain and gloom. Also, the wind is just so cold and awful. Bergen receives 1958 mm (77.1 in) of rainfall per year, and on average there are 242 days per year with more than 0.1 mm (0.004 in) of rainfall...! 242 out of 365 days a year with rain. Insanely bad.
Well, if you like the rain like me, it’s worth it. I love it here.
@@theherk Nobody likes rain more than a little. Would you rather choose to live a place with more sun than rain? Of course. That's a big copium right there dude.
@@L.D.1 Is it? Alright. I guess I'll take your word on my preferences. I moved from San Francisco to Bergen. I'm happy with that choice. Call it whatever you please.
@@theherk Damn, that's a downgrade
The stairs look tough, not the best exercise for the knees, even for the younger. Coming down is not even better.
Um, there are native American dwellings in the southwestern US which have been continuously inhabited for 1000 years.
Even some early colonial dwellings in the US go back to the 16th Century.
wow. 2 seconds in the video you stop it..Come on hehe
I am from Bergen. Born and raised.
I wonder where these residents park their cars ?
At the street close by to their apartment or at park houses.
houses for cars. They are placed random out in Bergen.
But the big ones are underground.
Many of us just don’t have them. We walk much and the transit is good.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Looks like some Native American totem pole ... ?
Isn't that a Ukraine flag
It is. Some people have put out flags to express their support of Ukraine.
On his UK channel, Tyler criticizes wooden houses, because they're pretty common in the US. Here, he praises Norway's wooden houses.
PANDERER
Are you ok man? I watch his videos every few months, and you are always here addressing things in the video directly with the tantrum of a 5 y/o.
Otherwise, humans are complex beings capable of having multiple of contradictory opinions about the same thing... insane, right? The only pandering here is you supporting this delusion you keep up to be able to come into every video, watch it and make rude comments, often far fetched ones at that..

- Tyler meant on average...
But you love twisting his words to fit your arguments and/or insults.
-
As for your example...
When you have to travel roughly 24 hours by car to reach a hiking trail, it's not exactly easily accessible to the average population.
That is precisely the point Tyler was trying to make...
And you call him a dumbo?! **Facepalm**
-----
Does Evansville, Indiana have anything besides Walmart and McDonald's, because that's all you seem to know about.
It's weird that while Tyler recognizes that the US "is gigantic" (his own words) and has a variety of climates, he somehow thinks the entire US looks just like boring Evansville, Indiana.
Dumbo
Is that what is weird here?
Not the fact that you are applying for the antagonist to be based off you in "Baby Reindeer 2"?
@@dannyboy1789
I had that thought too after watching the show. That is how you come across Silvana, like Martha.
Why not create something yourself, your chanel got no content, why is that? Jerk.....
