  • The Spike Family consists of missiles suited for several platforms, multiple ranges and a variety of targets. The Spike missile system is manufactured and marketed by the Israeli Company Rafael. Spike is a fourth generation man-portable fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missile with tandem-charged HEAT warhead. The Spike missile can be also used on ship. SPIKE-ER Missile will be operated from dedicated station remotely and both operators (Boat navigator/steerer and missile operator) will be able to coordinate their action optimally - visual and hearing contact available. The SPIKE-ER can be installed in the AH-1S Cobra, Agusta A-129, MD-500 Defenders, Gazelle, Mi-24 Hind and many more aircraft or helicopter. All of the Spike Family members have a low Life Cycle Cost, due to high reliability and operational, logistic support and production commonality between members.

    I‘m a German paratrooper and we got the 4km version for infantry this year (we call it MELLS).
    I shot 5 missiles so far and can tell you this thing is a monster. We penetrated 1 meter of pure steel with it. You can see a fucking squirrel at 4.000 meters at night, that’s crazy.

    I served in IDF as a medic in Armored corps back in 1998.
    The anti-tank groups at the engineering corps camp near us had many training exercises and
    they were always in a shortage of medics, that are obligatory to every live ammunition exercise.
    So they always "loaned" medics from our camp for their war games. That's where I first seen Spike at work.
    I was blown (luckily not literally )) by this system!
    At first launches I wasn't stationed near the launcher, I guess back then some of the systems were still a secret.
    I just watched a rocket climb steeply on it's way to a soviet T-55 several km from us and when it got near the tank turned down and hit from above smack in the middle of the turret.
    After several exercises they got familiar with me, (probably had run some checks on me) and allowed to be stationed near the launchers. That was awesome! I saw how they got sudden orders in the middle of the missile flight to divert it to another target and hit it.
    Being the tanks guy, I understood that you can't do much with wire guided rocket hitting you from above.
    I don't think that even the active protection system, can intercept a rocket that comes straight down, but maybe I'm wrong. Our tanks still weren't equipped with such systems back then.
    Another, less amusing fact about Spike system. It was involved in 1992 Zeelim B disaster. 5 sayeret matkal soldiers
    were killed by Spike rocket in live ammunition exercise while training towards secret operation to kill Saddam Hussein.
    The launching team got confused and launched the rocket, while in reality it was still "dry" exercise, with soldiers in the hit zone. :( The operation was a top secret, so was the existence of Spike missile system.
    The whole operation was cancelled after the disaster.

      That's the upside of being the company medic! I also had to be on call wherever our guys were shooting anything. I of course always brought my own binoculars along for when the tanks were shooting. Since reservists usually insist on coming back to their families in one piece, I thankfully never had anything to do, apart from sitting in the friendly, solid shade of one of these Ze'elim Tamarisk trees and watching things go boom, and of course shooting every conceivable gun on range days. At times, it felt like a vacation, and it always beat being at work!

      Reminds me of a Star Trek Deep a space Nine episode where a "smart" weapon was fired hundreds of years ago and it's programming got changed during the centuries.
      Kira had to go on board and interact with it, but she couldn't outsmart the "smart" missle .
      Episode was in the 90s when smart weapons were all the rage .
      Star Trek is great at taking current technology trends to an extreme, like a humanoid having a debate with a smart missle about the ethics of its purpose as a smart weapon ...
      "...but it's what I was made for. It's who I am. It's my purpose for being to destroy. I must follow my programming, even if I know it's wrong ."

    Notwithstanding the unit cost (what is that cost, BTW), I'm really impressed with the Spike system.
    That it can give the user REAL-TIME updates as to what is downrange and within its field of view and, therefore, able to target, is exceptional and unheard of in previous weapons systems.
    I must say that based on the video shown of the pending targets, the missile seems to be fairly slow as missiles go.
    I mean it literally seems like you can run along side of it in flight. No blistering speeds there, NoSiree.
    But the opportunity to cancel a target intercept of change of targets of opportunity make it quite a formidable opponent.
    Thanks for putting this video together.

  • @BugMagnet
    @BugMagnet 6 років тому +19

    I think the cost would be outweighed by the reduced casualties taken in actual combat thanks to the ability to basically scout and engage tanks without even popping up on IR at any time if emplaced nicely. I wonder why they went for CCD cameras though. They are the right pick for scientiffic analysis where the density of light needs to be measured to perfection. But in a military application the presence of blur and low framerate seems annoying.

    I was on active service back in the mid-nineties when we were stationed with guys from the original Meitar and Moran units. Back then the Spike was an absolute secret and everybody tried guessing the big secret.
    I still remember how the guys there used my own vanity and let me keep on believing that I cracked it when I thought it was a ground fired Hellfire.
    I'd say they were great in deception, but I was probably too dumb and full of it to notice.

    Spike is a very impressive system. There was some critisism regarding the thermal imagine system's, target confusion in very hot environments, but there is also a visual camera on the missile. The new versions have non-cooled IR optics resulting in increased range.
    The Spike MR2 has 3000m range, from 2500m. The Spike LR2 has 5500m range, from 4000m. The Spike ER2 has 10000m range, from 8000m and with Data Link fired from helicopters it can go up to 16000m. Finally, the Spike NLOS missile increased it's range to 30000m from 25000m. The hit accuracy for the Spike family is said to be 10cm (4 inches). Keep up the good work MATSIMUS.

    Hey matsimus rusty in oz here, luv the system😉!! everything about it is wot you would expect if the Israelis designed & built it.
    The launcher multipurpose, the rockets multipurpose, it doesn't seem to have any downsides. I noticed that the hardware.well at least some of it was made by Sony which probably means that I can plug in my ps4 controller & fire & guide the rocket with it😆. I would find it very interesting to see if u could connect it to a camera fitted drone which is then used to discretely find many targets tag them all & using vehicle,helicopter mounted systems fire as many rockets possible using the drone as the targeting system once it tags a target tank,truck,towed artillery or even a large force of men it would continue to track until said vehicles are destroyed.
    You could run your war without even seeing your enemy.

    I had a chance to take a look trough Spike-LR CLU, thermal seems very clear, even during hot day picture is free of noise. Thermal offers 2 magnifications to choose + extra electronic zoom (E ZOOM) mode. On left grip you have focus, optical zoom, brightness/contrast and BHOT/WHOT buttons (maybe i have forgotten about 1 or 2), there is also 3 position thermal switch (OFF/STANDBY with cooling/ON) there. On right grip you got a guarded lock on trigger (it probably also prepares missile like in Javelin), unguarded fire button, thumbstick with force sensing (for trajectory adjustments in flight) and IIRC 2 buttons (one for E-ZOOM and another one for MANUAL mode). Not sure where is a button for LOW/HIGH trajectory selection, maybe it is one of the left grip ones i have forgotten? CLU can display image (from build in thermal or from missile) or can be used as periscope alike thing (just like Javelin). On the bottom there are 3 LED lights (TIS, MSL and SYS). TIS is for thermal, IIRC it shows if thermal is cooling down, MSL gonna be for missile, SYS, well it stands for system but i have no idea on what it does.

    Indian MoD canceled the large Spike deal along with license manufacture was canceled because DRDO (Def RnD agency) said that a domestic missile with much cheaper price will be available in a few years but a small amount of spike will be bought as stopgap measure and replace some older versions of Milan and Konkurs

    • @pteppig
      @pteppig 6 років тому +5

      So, they basicly want to play "cheap china knockoff", but a few, test them, take them apart and produce a chaper copy of them. But considering the indian arms industry, that would be quite a good copy

    • @AshisKumar
      @AshisKumar 6 років тому +10

      Thats not exactly why they wanted to cancel. India doesn't breakdown & make copy of other country tech. Trust is very important to India.
      The reason for cancellation is, DRDO says they are already in the stage where they can develop a homemade version of anti-tank missile. So, they want to offer the armed force with a local weapon & not want them to buy a expensive foreign missile.

    From what I’ve seen heard and read, Spike might be the best available in the world. In comparison to Eastern ATGM systems, the Russians make phenomenal ATGMs but they are not shoulder launched, nor is it a top down munition. It’s up side however is long range, accuracy and penetration.
    Imagine if the Kornet was top down and shoulder launched?

    As a Canadian, I agree 110% but our acquisitions personnel are beyond fucked and absolutely frustrating to deal with. How long did it take for us to get new rifles for the Rangers and how many companies did we piss off? We spent half a mil on researching camouflaged boots but can't spend that on getting better lbe. We got rid of our 60mm mortars and replaced them with an auto ranging grenade launcher that sits in warehouses in Canada. We bought the TAPV that's about the size of a LAV but less protected, less armed and carries less people to do jobs already being slotted for by other vehicles. We have 0 land based AA after retiring ADATS. And with all the bitching about F35 it looks like we're going to get no new jets. Don't even get me started on our Navy.
    Canada's military acquisition is a bad joke paid for by the blood of Canadian soldiers. Absolute outrage.

      @v13r3r 6 років тому +1

      And that was all to stick it to Boeing for suing Bombardier because Boeing is a bitch. The biggest bullshit besides buying used aircraft is that your Hornets are STILL Boeing. If we were going to be this wishy washy we should have just stuck with Lockheed's F35 or taken Rafaele's offer.
      It's sad when even a country like Luxembourg is better put together than we are.

    Amazing Missile System. As far as India is concerned, I have been reading that their MoD has been pushing for more "in house" domestically produced kit.

    • @death_parade
      @death_parade Рік тому

      Yeah. The kit is already about to complete testing. And its not just one ATGM but an entire array of Indian ATGMs, all 3rd gen or above fire-and-forget with rf data link and an IIR or MMW seeker, the latter with LOAL mode as well as LOBL. Being tested from man portable, vehicle launched, helicopter launched versions. These are the DRDO MPATGM (4 km range), DRDO Nag (8km), DRDO HeliNa (8km), DRDO Dhruvastra (8km), DRDO SANT (20km).
      .
      However since it would be a couple of years before the production contract is passed after trials, some Spike MR were bought as a stop-gap.
      .
      Keep in mind, in the desert trials for the Army, Javelin had succeeded and Spike had failed (IIR seeker couldn't acquire target in one particular condition). So now the Indian ATGM being accepted has actually been tested to exceed the Spike's seeker in that parameter. The seeker's heart that is the focal planar array was also developed in India.

    If I understand. You don't even need an ATGM.. The optics can be linked to others that do. Out of sight. They link to the one that does. Thus you can fire from cover. The other optics feeds the target information to it.
