- Video highlights of the caving year with members of Dudley Caving Club, featuring caves and potholes in Derbyshire, South Wales and Yorkshire. An amazing insight into the world beneath our feet. Why do we go caving? Are we mad? Could you do it? Contains a top tip for getting larger team members through tight squeezes.

Used to love caving 25 / 30 years ago ,alas I'm old and knackered now ! But once a caver always a caver that's why I'm watching your videos
Wonderful! The filming is so much better than a lot of other postings. Brings back happy memories of many caving trips back in the distant past.
John Scott Thanks John. We are learning as we go along but we are pleased with the way that this has turned out.
Another splendid production mr Edwards!
Amazing video, awesome that you make sure not to harm the formations!! That squeeze that yall had to go upward was scary to watch!! Glad some do this to show the inner beauty of the 🌎
Thanks for watching!
Complimenti... bel video che riesce a condensare egregiamente la gioia e la sofferenza che solo la speleologia sa regalare.
Napoli Underground It has been a very memorable year.
Really the best videos!
Thahs.
uli rahm Thanks for watching. We've got a few ideas for videos for next year.
What an awesome video. 😍 Really sums up caving to me 😍😍😍
Thanks Ben. This was shown at the Kendal Mountain Film Festival in 2015.
Thanks to "MARK"...me as a big belly caver...I have squeezed in some very tight places....25cm for 122 meters.. Lucky I have watched plenty of Keith's videos....Good caving my friend in 2015...
pallbearers1969 Looking forward to some great trips next year.
Awesome - thoroughly enjoyed watching it and remembered a lot of it too :o)
Henllan I enjoy putting these compilations together. Looking back over the year with lots of great memories. Great fun.
Fascinating, but the claustrophobic aspect is terrifying for me!
Extremely interesting video. Great job Keith (Y)
Ainee Q Thanks. We've been on some really good trips this year.
Another interesting and remarkable video - I often watch your films with a tight, scared but excited feeling in my chest - how you stop yourselves panicking and gagging when you come across a particularly tight "fatty filter" beats me. I have a partial understanding of your methods as I used to work for a pipeline inspection company and regularly had to crawl through pipes as narrow as 600mm to repair paintwork on welded joints but I knew the pipe couldn't collapse and there was never a chance of a rock moving and wedging me tight! Even so, I only did it reluctantly and in order to feed my family and after doing it for over 10 years I was glad that robotic gizmos were becoming the first choice for field joint repairs. This might sound odd but when I did stop doing confined space work my natural fear of getting stuck returned with a vengeance and I now feel fully claustrophobic.
One question I do have is - "you often seem to get soaked with freezing water and mud from the outset - how do you prevent the onset of hypothermia? Do you wear wetsuits under your overalls?"
Once again - well done - fab films - Keep up the good work and please stay safe...
Max White Hi Max and thanks for your great comment. Obviously confined spaces don't bother us but I have seen people get quite panicky in tight spots - caving certainly isn't for everyone.
Under our oversuits we usually wear fleece onesies. This material drains very quickly and holds on to very little water. This small amount of water quickly warms up to body temperature and the oversuit prevents evaporation. As long as we keep moving we do stay quite warm. Fleece is a great material. Cavers never wear wool or cotton as these materials do hold a lot of water and do not drain efficiently. I also have a neofleece which I sometimes wear under the oversuit. This is a shortie wetsuit with fleece lower arms and legs. If the caves are very wet for a long time we wear full one-piece wetsuits.
No more caving for me now until after Christmas.
Please keep watching.
Glad some brave souls are crazy enough to do this, amazing stuff.
loved this !! its something i will be getting into this year :) Hopefully :D
I hope so too and good luck. SRT opens up all sorts of new possibilities. Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay safe.
@@CaverKeith you too my friend. Happy New year
Congratulations, nice video. I like it very much.
Wish you good caving in 2015.
frey63 Thanks and we are looking forward to another good year's caving.
Great video Keith. I've just got myself a GoPro Hero 4 Silver (waiting for it to arrive). Do you recommend using a chest harness? I was going to mount it onto my helmet but may just use it handheld and on chest harness if it has proved to be successful.
Tony Salusbury Thanks again. I'm a big fan of the chest harness. The stuff in Peak Cavern was taken using the chesty mount. Personally I dislike headcam footage in caves, the camera moves about far too much and it makes me feel seasick. I often mount the GoPro on a small gorillapod and use it as a fixed camera, taking advantage of the wide angle lens.
Awersome video....for a French caver ...I realy appreceate your caves quality.... (Y) Sorry for the faults ;)
Pleased you like the video. Thanks for watching.
Great video! What camera setup did you use? I find it hard to get good-quality video underground.
Steven Johnson Hi Steven. I use 2 cameras - a GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition and a Panasonic WA10 waterproof camcorder. I attempt to balance the colour between the 2 cameras when editing. The trick to getting good underground video is to have very good lights. 4 of us have Scurions and we also use 160 LED array panels for back-lighting. I also throw away the complete rubbish. Most of what I take never makes it as far as UA-cam.
Keith Edwards Nice... I haven't tried the more recent GoPros, it looks like they have stepped up their low-light response considerably from the earlier ones. Now I need to schedule a caving trip there :-)
Steven Johnson When I did my research it seemed that the Black Edition did have better low light capability. If you do come over then you will have to get in touch.
Whats in the pelicase???
Super
Oops!!! I have almost zero experience using this comments bit - Seems I wrote way too much - in case the missing last sentence or two of my comment below doesn't show up as I wrote it - my question (at the end of the comment below) went something like:
"How do you stop the onset of hypothermia when you so often get soaked in cold water? Do you wear wetsuits under your overalls?
Anyway - as I said - brilliant films - please keep up the good work and stay safe - all the best for Christmas and the New Year.
At 4:19 what material is that?
water_skipper Hi. It's calcite, calcium carbonate.
Did she get hurt when she fell..?That looks like so much fun wish I could go...!
She didn't fall. She ascended powered by rocket boots. No, luckily, she was fine.
👍😉супер!!!
Can i ask what's in the plastic box???
Blood_Angel IX Hi. the boxes that appear from time to time throughout this video are used to transport cameras, camcorders, flash guns, tripods and lighting which of course are needed to make the videos.
@Keith Edwards, thanks for that. I just find it all fascinating. Some of those formations in the caves are absolutely stunning! It gets my heart racing and I'm just watching it on UA-cam. I'm slowly getting through all your videos. Keep up the good work my friend...
Thanks very much for watching my caving videos and I, pleased to hear that you are enjoying them.
At 10:50 what cave is that? It's stunning!
Hi Jakob. It's Dan Yr Ogof in South Wales.
@@CaverKeith Oh excellent! That's close to me! :) Thank you!
Did we meet at SWCC?
@@CaverKeith No, I'm on the other side of the channel, crawling away in the Mendips! Unless you were at Checc last year - maybe we saw eachother then!
How should I get into caving any easy start points caves etc
Based in the West Midlands btw
Join a caving club.
As Keith says contacting your local caving club is a good start. Not sure if it's applicable to you, but many universities have caving clubs which is how a lot of people start. If you're British here's a list of caving clubs. I've also added a link to the BCRA site.

As far as equipment is concerned you may be able to borrow or hire some to start with, but the first most people get are wellies, kneepads and wetsocks (having freezing cold wet feet is miserable) then build up from there with stuff like a light, helmet, underfleece and oversuit. Caving's a pretty cheap outdoor pursuit unless you go on to take up cave diving.
The main caving areas are the Mendips in Somerset, Brecon Beacons;s in S.Wales, The Peak District in Derbyshire and The Yorkshire Dales. There are a few other minor areas, but those are the main ones. Personally I think Burrington Combe in the Mendips is the best place for novice trips, but every area has caves appropriate for beginners.
If you live elsewhere in the world most Western countries have similar caving associations.
Unfortunately caving isn't an option at present with Covid, but hopefully in time things will return to normal.
Hope that's helpful.
Rocket boots? What's wrong with the patented buttered cat anti-gravity device? For those not familiar with this technological wonder it's based on the following principles:
1) Cats ALWAYS land on their feet.
2) If you drop a piece of buttered toast it ALWAYS land buttered side down.
Logically it therefore follows that if you butter a cat's back and drop it, it will never actually land and instead just spin in mid-air. And there you have it - the buttered cat anti-gravity device. No caver should go underground without one!
Love it.
You’re certifiable 😉
Very probably.
@@CaverKeith great video but please be careful 🙏🏽💕
Thanks. I always am.
I couldn't do it. Im also 6'5" 230 lbs tho...
Anyone around pa wanna go caveing I'm in Quakertown pa we could carpool
🍰🍰🍰🍰🍰🍰🍰
I think you may be spotting a theme following through a number of my caving videos. 🧁
ब
You do know that they are melted buildings from the previous civilisation..true fact hidden
Wow! Thanks for letting me know.
almost died potholing. do not do this crap
That's not right saying "could you do it " defensively to viewers. You don't know what certain individuals could achieve if they went on an excursion
Super
Thanks
