    This was so interesting. The Flowering Dogwood is our state tree and grows wild everywhere.

    Thank you so much for education us new dogwood tree owners. I just bought a dogwood and wondered why the white petals are kind of lightly burnt on the tips. I seen this in your video on the tips of the white petals and realize this is normal. I didn't know what to think when I bought it and started to question if I invested in a bad tree. I think it'll be nice in my front yard.

    One of my favorite trees. I planted mine where it gets half day morning sun and it’s been doing wonderful. Unfortunately a neighbor planted theirs in full all day sun and the poor thing barely has a living trunk as half of the trunk and branches facing south has been killed off from sun scald. 😮

      Too much sun can damage them, but a lot depends on the microclimate of the location. I have seen them growing in pastures in full sun here in KY and in TN with zero ill effects.

      @@BackyardEcology you’re right, so I guess full sun in the hot summers of central NC are too much for them to bare. 😱

      Likely, especially if the soils are dry.@@LostInThisGardenofLife

    Sadly the dogwood has disappeared from many forests. It is easy to see in late winter and has been removed from forests to be sold.
    Order dogwood saplings from Arbor Day Foundation or another reputable seller!!!

      Dogwood anthracnose has been a much more widespread cause of flowering dogwood disappearing from the woods. They may be dug in some instances but there is a huge supply of relatively cheap flowering dogwood available from the horticulture industry. Dogwood growing in near full shade conditions are highly susceptible to anthracnose which is why dogwood isn't seen as often in the woods these days.

    Anthony, does the Roughleaf Dogwood have the same benefit for moths/butterflies?

    • @BackyardEcology
      @BackyardEcology  11 місяців тому +1

      Yes! All of the shrub dogwoods are also excellent host plants and are also used by several species of pollen specialist Andrena bees. Roughleaf can spread quickly though.

      when you're over 50, "spreads quickly" is a desirable trait! haha.

    What about Pagoda Dogwood? I planted in in just partial sun.

      As long as it gets a few hours each day it should be fine. It has a more open - layered growth habit which looks super cool when the tree gets some age on it!

    The nursery near me only sells “Weaver White” variety. Would that still be beneficial to pollinators?

    • @BackyardEcology
      @BackyardEcology  11 місяців тому +1

      I believe that cultivar was developed for its growth form so it should still be beneficial for pollinators and as a host plant.

    Is this the same thing as Cornus florida?

    • @BackyardEcology
      @BackyardEcology  11 місяців тому +1

      Yes. The entire dogwood group has been going through a reclassification. Flowering dogwood is now in the genus Benthamidia.
