a big thank you to you, you saved me. I've already spent several hours trying out everything possible so that I can finally load my customer's step file into my blender with beautiful geometry. (this add-on called "stepper" worked, but it was a terrible geometry), and with the test version i was able to save and export everything was really amazed me. Thanks again!
awesome! Yeah i am not deep into the subject, but I have the feeling FreeCAD, Stepper and others use the same library wich result in the same. MOI3D seams to use something else or probably even their own techniques of converting.
Can you make tutorial. How can I rig this bikes tyer for rendering a moving bike? When I import .obj file I don't get materials which I gave in solidworks so how can I give them again in blender, my model is somewhat similar to this bike so it's very difficult to give material to single component of my model as there are way too many components. Could you or anyone can help me with this issue. Thanks.
I never rigged a bike actually .... but I do have that on my video ideas. Materials in Solidworks -> no idea. But it could be that it's more like 'color' than 'material'. But not sure :/
Here's what I do: open your part/assy in Solidworks Visualize (comes free with professional and premium) export as .obj and import that into blender (check "split by object" and "split by group"). Works nicely and even stuff like textures and bump maps come through. To adjust your tesselation use the image quality slider in document properties in SW :)
Thank you, i have a problem though. If i do this in text, i cannot get good results. Why is that? I mean, lets say i want to do a text animation in blender and i want the text with a font in quads. If i create a text in moi with a chosen font, when i export to obj i get the same result as in blender when you transform text to object. Is there any reason for this and what could a be a good solution?
thank you, this video was great info. Can I import from fusion 360 into moi, then into blender and get the same results you had in this video? The reason I'm wondering this is because it seems that fusion 360 has more features than moi, therefore saving me time by avoiding a smaller toolset to choose from.
Awesome video! I'm seriously considering getting MOI3D now because of that n-gon exporting. I wish blender would introduce something similar, like a step import -addon with similar retopology...
Yeah there’s an add-on but it’s more like FreeCAD quality. MOI is a one time purchase so at least you own it not like other software nowadays. Also I once had a question and the developer him self responded to me quite fast. So far I’m very happy with it. At least I haven’t found anything better yet.
Hi Damian! What is i do my CAD models in fusion360, then export it to moi3d for its cool export feauture and finish it in blender? I want to adopt this workflow to make guns for aaa games. I know that every top tier hard surface gun artists are using this workflow. What do you think?
great tutorial. I used to use cad assistant from occ to convert step to gltf because gltf retains cad hierarchy which is essential if you want to make assembly animation. the problem is you have no control over the conversion quality. moi 3d is great, though I have to use fbx, for the same hierarchy reason. way cheaper than rhino or solidworks.
Man, wish you had made this a six months ago :) As a UX Designer (and Blender hobbyist) I received interior stp files that we were to show within a Settings UI. Converted them to fbx using Fusion 360, but the topology was (of course) an unworkable mess so it was incredibly difficult to tweak them enough for rendering. With quads that would have been a completely different matter... Does Moi allow you to combine/reduce the number of separate objects, or does that depend entirely on the CAD file? With the files I had there was about 500K objects after converting, which Blender is not really built to handle... just joining them was super tedious.
Oh I see ..... you can check out the trial for sure and see how it performs. But I think, it also might be a suicide mission. One time I exported multiple groups, because my RAM was filling up. In blender, I then cleaned and merged the groups step by step. Otherwise, you can delete stuff inside of MOI, but not sure if that's what you want. Main benefit of MOI is, that you can set the resolution/polycount. Sometimes the files are just generally not poly friendly, because as nurbs, they use up way less memory.
I think a lot of people would like more videos about CAD NERB to blender. I’m learning blender and fusion 360 and I would much rather make all of my game assets and 3d printing files in Fusion
hi, is there a way to update CAD models without getting duplicate geometries and without having to reapply textures? unfortunately i only know solutions for other programs like C4D or 3DS Max.
Great work man !!! Can you tell me how scale it correctly ,I am not using blender key map instead more of industry kep map ,so would i do s.1 you did there ??ANyone??
You always make qualitative videos.. a lot of very interesting free ressources on this channel, keep going please, you are doing a very great job.. thumbs up from France
There’s a stp addon for blender import. But yeah- I still prefer the clean mesh import from moi3d - nothing cleaner. Glad to hear that you are of the same opinion.
Yeah, exactly. Most, incl the add-on, result in a fixed resolution. I had some issues a few times, that the step was way too lowpoly (often small products).
@@DamianMathew Love your videos- the difference in quality comes from your hustle and experience in the field. I nod along to the scenarios and problems you are trying to solve- having gone through almost the exact same scenarios in the past- but you have a fresh set of eyes on the issues and a lot of fast and powerful solutions I never thought.
Based on my own experience I can say that, as much as I love MOI3D, for me it not always did the job well enough. Maybe it depends on the Step data or the CAD model itself, but I found OKINO Polytrans to be a good alternative from time to time.
Hello Damian!! Great tutorial as usual. I'm having issues with the file, the step file has it's own folder distribution (with objects, etc) and I'm loosing all of that, even loosing some details of the step file once I export it to obj. Do you have any personal options within MOI3d so that this doesn't happend?
Could you name some alternatives to Moi 3D? I am using Moi 3D after I saw this video for a while now and soon I either have to buy or crack it or need to try out another software which is maybe better.
Quality Tutorial. A suggestion for a video that how to find clients. It will very helpful to almost everyone because nobody talks about these topics. Maybe make it a paid course that will be amazing.
Which CAD software do you recommend? I'm guessing that each one is good in a certain area, maybe you could make a video explaining different CAD softwares and their purpose!
In school we use Creo Parametrics, I'm in a engineering class. It's really good, but hard to learn at first. But once you master it you can basically work with any other software without problems.
Yeah, kind of like what you say, it's based on the project. But 9/10 times I use MOI3D. I'd even say most are quite similar, but MOI stands out (on a converter side of view). Also VRED and DeltaGen do a great Job.
Lol no, fusion is realy basic cad software with a lot of limitations. Creo is a professional Cad good for mechanical, in machinery field creo is the top. In automotive you will find Catia, and sometime Nx siemens. Because they are really good for surface and average good for solid. It is true that when you enter in the mindset you can use every cad, but they have a lot of differences.
Hi, thanks for this video, I've some questions: 1-Apart from the fact that MOI is more friendly interface, which is the radical difference in NURBS modeling quality between this MOI, Blender and FreeCad? 2-Can MOI works with background reference images like jpg? Thanks
hey damian can you make a motorcycle tire modeling with an engraved pattern....it will be much appreciated there are no videos regarding this stuff thanks
I'm sorry to bother you with this, I'm trying to find a good tutorial on how to put a person on a motorcycle in Blender and make it look correct. Any chance you could consider doing something like that?
Some great nuggets of information 😊 I usually use stl files for this, I just apply "shade smooth" and turn on auto smoothing, I get decent results. But that's probably because I usually work with industrial machines which have straight planar faces... But it is good to know this workflow exists, I think it is affordable especially considering you can export quads... That's pretty crazy, I didn't even know that was possible 😏👌👌
@@DamianMathew Yes, it is possible. I've done that myself just few weeks ago. Some freeware CAD softwares must be used, but some playing around is needed and it is very hard to convert the applied modifiers.
The Quadremesh feature in Rhino 7 makes a pretty good job in converting OBJ or STL mesh data into quads which then can be converted into waterproof solid nurbs. I tried it with a sculpted model in Blender.
