Not really "wanted us to hate him". J.G. Quintel, who also voices Mordecai, wanted him to model his real relationship struggles. While he never did anything as bad (idealistically) as Mordecai, for example leaving his best friends for someone or taking them for granted, he has legitimately struggled with relationships at what would be Mordecai and Rigby's point in life.

I think what makes Regular show better than Adventure time or others is that all the characters are mean. They are dicks but that is literally what everyone is. There is not a single person who hasn't done a bad thing and that is okay. The only thing that we can do is accept it and fix it. In the movie, they go back in time and it's revealed Rigby forged (stole) Mordecai's college acceptance letter out of his mailbox to say he didn't get in college when he actually did get accepted, all because he wanted Mordecai to stay by his side and also forged his own rejection letter, then as they both read their college letters, when Mordecai was clearly distraught, Rigby tells him Rigby himself got accepted, but won't go for Mordecai's sake because they're "best friends". This was an extremely snake move on Rigby's end, and this aired just a little before this episode came out. TLDR; w/o the movie, this is a real bad look for Mordecai, but with the movie in mind and rewatching the entire show, Rigby looks worse and it makes Mordecai's behavior here somewhat well more justified and understandable.

Realistically, set aside all the random bullshit on the show, Rigby should have just ditched Mordecai. The final nail on this for me was when Rigby covered for Mordicai, who didjnt do his job b6 gokng out on dates with CJ, prior to Rigby being fired ans having to get a sife job of back lifting boxes. Realistically, set aside all the random bullshit on the show, Rigby should have just ditched Mordecai. Rigby wasn't perfect, but was it necessary to exploit and humiliate him, just because he didn't graduate? Throughout the show, Rigby had mostly been the literal punching bag for laughs, other times wasn't even amusing. The final nail on this for me was when Rigby covered for Mordicai, who didjnt do his job b6 gokng out on dates with CJ, prior to Rigby being fired ans having to get a sife job of back lifting boxes.
If anything, Mordicai is that one pathetic friend that does something inexcusable leading to the group's abandonement in real life.
