Newark actually has better public transit connections to Manhattan than the other two. The only thing that might change would be if any airlines book cross-city connections between these 3.

Big like JFK but with mostly domestic flights like LGA (other than United’s international services)

Back in 96, we flew into Newark from Frankfurt on a family holiday to the US. After landing there we had to transit over to JFK to wait for our luggage which was put on another flight as it had been left behind on our flight. Lufthansa paid for our taxi over to JFK because of the mess up.

Not sure who lobbied for this, but the gist of it is that only will ticket changes within "NYC" change, but also pricing. So When changing from a LGA to EWR flight, you will be stuck paying greater fare difference.
Since EWR is star alliance ( United and friends) and JFK is everyone else, I suspect it was "everyone else" who lobbied to exlcude United from "New York". The changes to make EWR less competitive will be gradual over a few years.
Air Canada fare rules still treat all 3 airport the same. (though they only serve LGA and EWR).
I beleive NYC also includes HPN (Westchester county airport).

I have always tried to avoid JFK at all costs. I also ask relatives to try to arrange flights into Newark Liberty for ease of commute. Living in Jersey, it's a 3 to 4 hour ride to JFK on a good day - but there is seldom a good day without traffic! I'm sure New Yorkers feel the same way about travelling to EWR. Just be careful when making flight arrangements, as you might inadvertently choose a New York airport when you want Newark, NJ. Review flight details before booking!

I think everyone from the NY, NJ, CT area does it a different way. Getting everyone to agree on the "best" way is not realistic. Some people land at KALB, KSFW, KHPN, or KPHL and use the train or a hire car to make it to their eventual destination or connection. It's a game and in the end it's down to the consumer to figure it out. Local knowledge is your best friend. Personally, I like HPN & SWF.

The IATA can do as they like. The real question is, what do people in NYC do? They use the airport. So call it a NY airport or not, it is still going to be a NY airport to those who live in the NY area. This is an academic question more than anything else that no person is going to really care about it unless it affects transferring between flights between airports because of cancelation. If the airlines change their rules and make it cost to change between airports when going and returning, then passengers will be mad.

Since its commission, Newark has always been considered a New York metropolitan area airport, and will continue to be. There are also several other airports in the NY metro that while in jurisdictions outside of NYC proper, are nonetheless considered NY metropolitan area airports, like Teterboro, White Plains, Islip, etc. The true issue that defines an airline’s destination choices are ground handling equipment, and the ease by which an airline can book alternatives for the displaced passenger.

I didn't know that. Coincidentally, I watched a video of an Aer Lingus flight from Newark to Dublin this morning. It was on an Airbus A321. I also saw an ad for Aer Lingus about upgrading their short haul fleet with A320 neos.

I’ve always found Newark to be my least preferred airport. You’re always sitting on the ground for a long time waiting to get in the air. New Jersey is just the Mississippi of the north.

This stinks of taxes and fee applied to the airlines by the city and state of NY. New Jersey probably push this..

LaGuardia is one of the worst airports, period...I have flown through there a couple of times from Canada and it is so small, cramped, run down and not many transport connections.

With online gambling legal in new Jersey doesn't that mean travellers can gamble on the airport WiFi now?

I've had nothing but horrible experiences at Newark and won't use it unless there are absolutely no options out of JFK or LaGuardia.

Flew into JFK in 2017 with Delta, it was quite confusing especially with ground transport. But I'm flying into Newark next month, lets see if that's any better

As a former long time West Side Manhattan resident, I've flown from all three airports both domestic and international on numerous occasions. EWR far and away was my airport of choice. From the the West Side of Manhattan it was almost always a half an hour or less to get to EWR by bus. I used EWR for both domestic and international flights and at the time found the airport convenient and easy to use. LGA was a necessary evil on many occasions when taking the shuttle to DCA. Kennedy was avoided at all costs because it would take so long to get there by any form of transportation save helicopter. Also JFK is immense, which is not a postive attribute.
