- If you want to know what turkeys sound like when they are close, watch this clip. A hen at daylight walked right up to the camera clucking and purring. She walks a few yards away and then just clucks, looking for the other hen. Nothing like turkeys in the timber.

That hen is putting because she can't find the other hen. Yes, there are a few clucks and purrs mixed in, but she knows something is wrong. I guarantee a longbeard won't be coming in to that.

Ive had more toms " long beards" come to clucks and purrs than anything else. It mimics what they do when they feed. So as long as you have a decoy or 2 out you should be fine.

givemaboot wouldn’t suggest this. Do a cluck and soft yelp to simulate a content hen. This isn’t a content hen this is a hen telling every turkey somethings wrong.

bfriendly100 if you are doing this call in the woods while trying to get your first bird I’m assuming 7 years later you still haven’t gotten your first bird. This call is a cluck purr call which is a warning call. I would suggest a cluck and a soft yelp to simulate a content hen. That call helps you get a gobbler to gobble to know where they are if you aren’t in a blind.

When their totally content they purr then cluck. Least bitt of excitement they cluck purr with a lot more clucking.
Fred Stearns no when they purr and cluck they know something’s up and they are basically warning all the other turkeys to leave. I would suggest a cluck and then yelp call to simulate a content hen.

This is a mix of purrs and alarm calls. The sharp quack-like sounds are the alarms.
Early in the video clucking and purring and toward the end. She was putting, but I was able to calm her down with calling.

sounds like your calling is working cause the hen didn't bust thats how i see if a mouth call is a good turkey call is to practice on the hens and see how long you can keep them by you one time i called in a hen from a tom and had here stay for 45 min and she heard me and did some purring and little sutle yelps not to soft though.
