This is another masterpiece composed by Ries. Its musicality is magnificent not leaving us emotionally indifferent. The musical strength and at the same time, grace and elegance are two permanent factors in his compositions. How fantastic is the Allegro in which this two facets intertwine in a sublime way. Here the pianist’s interpretation is fabulous and amazing in sensibility and technique. The second movement is a fantastic lyricism, which take us to emotional levels that are sometimes frightening. The concerto ends with a Rondo of incredible harmony, although interspersed with moments of greater musical intensity. The pianist’s performance is superb. The orchestra and direction are flawless. Viva Ries and his unforgettable and fabulous music. Thanks for this magnificent recording.

Thankyou very much for sharing. I'm of a respectable age and I always liked some of Ries' pianoconcertos even before the Age of You Tube. I've heard not all eight of them, maybe now I can. I've read with interest the comments and answers. I've never compared composers, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and maybe also in the ear of the listener, but a respectful discussion is always possible. In any case this a beautiful concerto that I hear for the first time..

Dear Sibarit, it's superfluous to say that Ferdinand Ries belongs to my favorite composers too. The influence from his great teacher are mostly perceptible and as always love all you published.
True, thank you! I also think that all Ries concertos "could be a success for concert halls"... But who would dare to perform all these concertos? As far as I know, only Hinterhuber did it (I thank him very much).
@David A It's possible, but I don't know anything about the Ries - Howard Shelley recordings. I tried to post the concerto no. 9 (g minor op. 177, 1832 - 1833), also with Hinterhuber, but the post was blocked.
@@sibarit101 I'm sorry to hear about this. I simply cannot understand why these people have an issue with anyone posting music that otherwise would not be heard by thousands. Don't they wish to promote "proper" music, it might influence them to spend money on similar music they produce. It's cutting off your nose to spite your face. They are ignorant money grabbers. The Chinese say: How many times do people lose a penny, when they can be sure of a pound.
Ries' final Concerto is a great one that would have done Hummel or even Beethoven proud. His melody at 20:53 is especially gratifying; the effect at 27;33 very effective; the meltingly lovely 'larghetto' would have done Mozart proud, as indeed would the whole Concerto.

This is not his last concerto, there is also the concerto no.9 op.177 (1832) but, in my opinion, this concerto is one of the most beautiful concertos ever composed (maybe I am subjective considering that Ries is my favorite composer). My friend here's another coincidence after the Pleyel one. I was just listening to your older uploads of Ries (#3 my favorite and #5 and #6).... While listening #3, et voila, here's YT notification that you had uploaded #8......🤗🤗🤗 I had just written by answering to one of your listeners that in my modest opinion Ries piano concertos whole bunch is superior to the Beethoven's bunch. Blasphemy? Maybe. I find Ries concertos more mature and more visionaries than LvB ones (except my favorite fourth). I think LvB is a great genius and certainly the greatest musician ever lived. However my Trinity of this wonderful period between end of xviii and early xix centuries (as far as piano concertos, I mean) are Hummel, Ries and Dussek..... Followed by Czerny, Kozeluch, Wölfl, Eberl and Field (yet piano concertos is the topic herewith). As far as piano concertos and as far as only the above mentioned time slot, LvB comes after all of the above. As far as symphonies, quartets, piano sonatas and selected other works..... Chapeau Ludwig...

@@sibarit101 here I am after my 4 hours full immersion into Ries symphonies. It was really long time since I listened to them, hence welcome refreshing my memory. I must confirm that I liked'em all. Well, no surprise, isn't it? My favorite is A minor op 181 followed by D major op 146. Well pretty much the same you pointed me yesterday. While listening the 5th I could not resist to answer to the relevant blog of another YT channel to the superficial comment of some saying that Ries 5th was a pale and badly made imitation of LvB 5th and that other works of Ries are interesting but he never evolved from LvB imitation. Honestly, while respecting taste of anybody, I could not refrain from telling him that 1) Ries music has very little to do with LvB one; 2) Both Ries & LvB (and Spohr and Hummel and and) uses the musical language of their time that takes form past masters legacy (Haydn etc) and that each of them elaborates with his own taste. Hence that when Ries looks like LvB it's actually that both drink at same source, not that Ries "copies" from LvB; 3) he should listen to all Ries production and he will identify an evolution indeed In my opinion LvB remains the undisputed titan of music and certainly his latest piano sonatas and quartets cannot (and will not be) equalized. But this renders LvB less "useful" to his posterity than Ries, Hummel etc. Because no one was insane enough to take from those latest works and elaborate from them. Those latest sonatas and quartets are the end of Universe. Impossible go further. Nonetheless Ries & C were more "useful" to their posterity because others could elaborate from them. And Ries himself develops a language far away from LvB in his later works, anticipating the full romantic era. In this respect he is more advanced than LvB because develops something useful for others whereas LvB latest language is useful only to his delighted listeners Besides Ries has been in a way less shy than Schubert. Both loved LvB music but Schubert unleashed his best only after LvB death whereas Ries was not ashamed to be compared with his big friend and his development is constant and consistent (not that Schubert wrote bad things during LvB life but what he wrote after is among the best anyone can listen to OK better I stop now .......... otherwise I bore you and whomever is reading ...... Maybe for the same reason I avoid getting into "disputes" with those who only accept the music of Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, Chopin, Schubert.... I suppose they are based on the "principle": "what I don't know, doesn't exist!" (or not worth listening to). So I don't answer those who talk all the time about influences or, more importantly, about imitating or copying the music of the great composers. Regardless of their opinion, I will continue to listen to the music of Ries, Hummel and many lesser known ones, but always a few tears will flow while listening to Beethoven's concert # 5 and Bruch's concert # 1 for violin...

How much haughtiness!!! In this case i did not intervene because I would have been really tough! Of course not all what is obscure and forgotten happens to be an unsung masterpiece, but first you need to listen and after you can judge, can't you? Otherwise how do you know it's poor music? But judging something as poor only because it's not famous and arrogantly saying that whatever is not famous is because it's bad ..... well that's brain limitation ...... BTW Luchesi Requiem is really poor music, but I liked having listened it, first, second Luchesi music is sometimes very good (especially instrumental) and in any event anyone is free to say I like or I dislike without being ridiculed by selfish arrogant experts. Anyhow, my next Ries re-listening will be string quartets ........ :-) I remember I liked them ........ and I want to re-like :-) Cheers

Yes, it seems that the two musicians understood each other very well and appreciated each other, and Beethoven's influence was indeed beneficial, although their music has little in common.
