It depends which way you want to spin. The modern convention is generally to spin singles clockwise and ply anti-clockwise. Most (but not all) right handed people find it easier to clockwise with their right hand. If you intend on plying you can get both. Or you could get a spindle without a notch at all. You could also practice the movements on something else, like a chopstick or pencil and see what feels more natural.
I see that you can get clockwise or counter-clockwise spirals...as a new spinner, how do you know which one to buy?
