- Before work can continue on the $30.7 Million erosion control project to protect the Montauk Point Lighthouse, the "Pill Box" had to be be lifted from where it has sat for 45 years. It dramatically tumbled from the cliff face above after being undermined by severe erosion.
The Pill Box was estimated to weigh as much as 100,000 Lbs. The equipment they brought in was absolutely mind blowing!!
I cant believe they got ride of it I used to play in that thing while my dad was fishing for stripped bass
I wondered what the hell happened to it. I showed up there at the point one day and it was gone.
Thank you for watching teddybetts3254! So, it was moved in 2 pieces about ~75 yards away from where you remember it being and sits at the base of Turtle hill within the confines of the Montauk Point Lighthouse grounds as a point of interest.
Awesome, I used to climb inside when it was on the surf. That is the Base End Station (BES) for Battery 113, have some other old pics of it when it was dug into it's original position. I heard it was hurricane Bell that was the the final push brought it down. Either way Thanks for the great video I was on the edge of my seat! I think I might binge watch all of your videos lol
So glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for sharing your experiences and memories. According to information we've been given, the pillbox was actually "hosed" (washed) out of the cliff intentionally by the Coast Guard because it had been undermined so severely it had become an extreme hazard to anyone on the beach below. RE. ""binge watching all videos"... PLEASE DO!!! LOL Thank you for watching!
It looks to me like a searchlight shelter. The Base End Stations are located in front of the lighthouse and on Whale hill nearby.
@@julianmalcolm Hello Julian, Thanks for the Coastal Defense convo! This channel is great for aerial searching for historic ruins! Yeah it says the BES 113 was that one in front of the lighthouse, not in the tower, but dug into the bluffs edge... it fell down long ago, and they recently lifted it off the surf. The BES 112 is missing to this day, I have the exact Blueprints and coordinates for both and I am still searching for the other one (although there is a structure in the surf further West down the beach).
You are right the BES 216 is in the FC tower in front of the Light house and Whale Hill had the other BES for Battery 216. The HECP for the mines was on the top floor. That one on whale hill is one of my favorites if it the one that is disguised as a windmill!
I also have the coordinates and some blueprints for the 2 BC stations at Camp Hero and 2 More FC stations on Camp Hero property, and 6 more related FC stations outside of Camp Hero property. The One thing I can never find at Camp Hero is the location of the x2 Searchlight battalions - they had x2 35' towers (I found one of those) but can't find the shelters or generator shelters. Anyways, Always interested to find out info on any of the Harbor Defenses of LI.
@@montaukisstrange I apologize for my false information. Thank you for confirming. I have not been to Montauk enough to know all of this. I study the Coast defense throughout Maine New Hampshire Massachusetts and a bit of Rhode Island. The shelters were probably destroyed in the 60s during the radar station days. I would love to see some of the information you have collected. Great content.
I also read that whale hill is full of old Grenades from explosive practice. Is this true? Also what happened to the Endicott battery on Whale Hil. I am yet to go there.
Worked with Greg Donahue on the bluff back in the early 90's.
Hard to recognize the area. Changed so much from my childhood. But the work is the only thing preserving the lighthouse.
Great video.
Interesting. Looks like they straightened it out for the lift. Last time I saw it (which was just before the work began), it was sitting on the rocks at a huge angle and very hard to get to.
Thank you for watching... It's entirely possible. There was a lengthy preparation phase before they brought in the big crane for the lift.
Great video today
Thanks so much! and thank you for watching!!
@@montaukdronestar7710 I can share this if you don't mind to my channel I actually do some stuff related to camp hero right next door
@@BigfootSasquatch Please be my guest!
Very cool video. I wonder if they have any plans to preserve that pill Box or not?
@@tommyo321 They do in fact have plans to preserve it, yes. It was moved twice the day this video was shot and currently it's resting 20-30 yards from the edge of the bluffs at the bottom of Turtle Hill. The information we have is that the hope is to eventually move it to a more permanent location where it's historic significance can be better appreciated by visitors.
I would have left it where it was and then used the money to repaint the lighthouse
The lighthouse tower is currently undergoing a COMPLETE restoration. Right now it is stripped of all paint while crews are "re-pointing" the sandstone blocks ( they literally remove each block, sharpen corners or replace block of it can't be repaired,) and repairing the mortar between the sandstone blocks. Once that phase is completed the lighthouse will be repainted to all it's former glory!
No !! I used to fish right next to it !!
I help with the paint job at the light house
Hi Roger. You guys do a fantastic job! Those are challenging conditions up there.
