when cutting fur, it's recommended to use a knife, not scissors. cutting with scissors will also cut the hairs along the seam, but if you cut with a knife down the flesh side, the fur will simply part undamaged 😊
Thank you for sharing!
Yes! Also make sure you use a stiff and slightly dull blade. There's a difference between "sharp" and "hair popping sharp" and you just want sharp. The skin is easy enough to cut through. I just finished making another rabbit fur collar for a coat I have (silver fox) and it came out beautiful! The fur naturally parts along the seam at the back so it looks really sharp! Give it a shot! Rabbit pelts are a lot cheaper to start with than virtually anything else natural except sheepskin which isn't quite the same.

Does the hide have a bad smell after it comes out of prepared water
Haha, people are staring. Yeah, they do. I tanned a deer hide once, and people were mortified 😂😂😂.
It most definitely makes people take a double take
Great video as usual Bobby!! Here's a method I like for breaking the skin fibers and softening: Take a plastic type rope (1" size) like polyethelene put one end in a vise or anchor it, and put a loop large enough for your foot on the other end. About 6' of rope works well. Put your foot through the loop and pull the rope taught. Work the hide over it like you did with your wooden frame. The rope fibers work nicely and dont damage the hide. It really softens and breaks the fibers nicely and you can adjust tension with your foot. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for sharing
You should do a video to show this technique!
Do that but find a way to have a pulley set up to replace your foot tensioner, easy $ 🖖
can you make a video haw you do that ?
I wasnt able to hide my first batch like I wanted but its okay because this batch is twice as many rabbits and I may have enough to make the fur rug I'd like. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the video! Lots of good info. We will be breeding our first pair this weekend!
That’s great good luck with your litter
Wish I would have watched it yesterday. I did it the UK old-fashioned way. This looks easy enough 👍👍👍
Best of luck next time

Yes!! asked for this video a while back and you answered Sir. Thank you
You bet I enjoyed making it. I lost the washing sequence but just found it in my hard drive under a chicken file name??? I'm thinking about adding an quick clip into the next video just for a follow up.

Glad you like them! Best of luck with your rabbitry
The hides turned out very nice. Great information!
I’m so glad!
I use the yellow of an egg to tan mine, makes it super soft! Then i smoke them for a light brown color
that’s terrific! thanks for sharing your tips!
I followed another person's video using 1 cup of alum and 1 cup of salt per 5 gal bucket. Got in it today less than 2 wks and total mush. 9 pelts destroyed. Thanks for your video. Butcher week and hoping for better results.
Try keeping in room temperature stirring daily and checking seven days in if you can pull the membrane then the chemical is working faster than usual. Unfortunately one recipe won't work everywhere due to different climates.
Best of luck with your pelts

I flesh my rabbits right away with a fleshing knife on a fleshing board. I find it comes off easy if you do it right away. Then I salt them. After they've dried I use a wire wheel on my drill to remove anything I missed.
Thanks for taking the time to share!
How do you soften them after they've dried? I have a few and I want to make a jacket liner. I've heard mink oil... but I don't want to ruin what I have

Garwood Gerdes Yes there were now those are in the freezer
Try using a fleshing board and not cutting the skin until its time for final rinse and dry... it makes cleaning so much easier
I’ll take that into consideration thanks for watching
Does the Bud Light help with the process? LOL :) Great info and detail helps. Thank you!
Yes it does! Sometimes I have to slow down because it's helping so much.
@@TheRabbitryCenter Good to know, lol. 😄 🐇
Is the alum process stinky/heat sensitive? Live at an apartment complex and was planning on keeping my brine bucket (with a lid on) in my shaded outdoor car port. It’s LA so it can get up to 100 regularly. Didn’t wanna make the whole place smell like death lol. Love the videos
It's best to keep it around room temperature so it doesn't bake
It shouldn't stink or have too strong of a smell Because you're rinsing most of the blood
Great video, thanks for sharing! Does smoking after alum tanning work the same as after egg tanning? I'm getting 12 skins and would rather pickle them to save time but I don't understand enough about the process to know if smoking will still work for waterproofing. (planning on making collars) Thanks in advance if you have the time to answer :)
Making collars that's something I haven't heard of best of luck ! I haven't smoked rabbit hides yet
I used to put the hyde over a wire stretcher in the tube shape. That was a long time ago. Do they use wire frames to dry them anymore?
I still have one lying around
There’s a lot of good ways to get er done
Thanks for watching
Very nice! The finished furs look so nice. Do you find that the furs shed a lot? I once had rabbit fur coat, but the thing shed so badly that I finally got rid of it.
yes they'll shed a lot. You can run a comb/brush through it to get a lot of the hair that's shedding/ slipping.
I was told that pickling helps keep the hair from shedding salt/vinegar
Nice, thx for the info!
You bet Thanks for taking a look.
What age is the “sweet spot” for processing to get best hide and still have good eats? Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience!
At 4-5 months the meat will start to loose its tenderness of fryer meat but the hide will start to strengthen making it possible to work them without tearing them.
so fare the best tutorial how to
So glad you liked it!
Thank you so much for sharing this method, I was so scared to do it, but after watching you touching allum with bare hands I was like ok, I can do it. How do you discard the liquid afterwards? Thank you!
an Alum solution isn’t as toxic as youd think you just simply pour it where you’re not growing anything I usually poor mine behind my wood pile
Is there anything you need to do to them to them so you can use them in the snow? You mentioned mittens, and I feel like mittens often get wet.
I meant the cuffs of the mittens
If you turn the hide inside out and stick a board inside and use a blade to cut it you will loss less fur.
Someone else said you can use a spoon with the flesh.
That's good advice thank you.
I do use a pelt scraper ua-cam.com/video/T7GjEd8rWus/v-deo.html
Thank you for posting. How can one find buyers to the pelts?
By posting on your site and reaching out to fur buyers
I am thinking about starting a rabbit farm since meat in my country are kind of getting expensive, so why not, I should make to business as well a different sustenance, cuz rabbits meat are very nutritious too, and as well I want to make a rabbit hide coat if I want to.

Is it an option to leave the pelt intact. It’s it original tube form? Similar to how the tan raccoons and foxes?
Absolutely! You should try both and see what you prefer. I like storing them as little rugs but you should do it the way you want. Thanks for watching!
My girls in the house all look at me differently now I want to raise meat rabbits ....
ua-cam.com/video/AFM3hwuaRlo/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
this video shares more about why folks are raising their own.
When you haven’t raised livestock before, the whole thing could be foreign.
Often when introducing livestock to a property it’s an excellent complement to the backyard. You get to enjoy beautiful animals and prepare clean chemical free meat from animals that have been raised humanely. It’s a satisfying and honest way to live and you’re doing it because you love your family and you want to provide healthy meat that doesn’t have hazardous chemicals in. Most of the meat available in stores have been shipped from long distances processed from animals that are stressed, and raised in horrible conditions and the meat has been sprayed with ammonia, carbon monoxide, dipped in chlorine, treated with growth retardance, the list goes on and on. These are things you shouldn’t be putting in your body.
When you have your own meat production, part of your family can enjoy the animals and prepare terrific dishes, and other family members can handle the processing. Best of luck convincing them and thanks for watching!
Is there a direct correlation between how long you leave the hide in the pickle and how easy (or difficult) it is to pull the membrane?
Yes I test around 7 days and attempt to pull the membrane again a few days later if it's not removing easily. I usually have them pulled by day 14. I use a pelt scraper amzn.to/3pTPB9m in this video. It helps a lot. ua-cam.com/video/T7GjEd8rWus/v-deo.html
I have a washboard do you think that would work for after the skins dry? And does it smell bad?
You want to wash them well so they smell good
Wash board should work well
thank u
your very welcome
Do you only have nz rabbits? I like all the different colors and length of fur.
Judd Pendred We have California rabbits as well sometimes we rescue other breeds if people can’t find a home but we usually sell them within a couple weeks

Would it be helpful in a Wisconsin winter (zone 4b) to tan a hide and use it under just born kits for warmth? I find these babies keep burrowing down so deep they get down to the bottom of the box. Could i possibly just wash with soapy water with a capful of bleach to clean and sanitize after a couple weeks to reuse with another litter or is this just a bad idea?
I line the bottom with a piece of cardboard And replace it with every litter if the nesting box is dirty be sure to clean it with a Lysol disinfectant
I have always fleshed before any type of tanning. Have you tried both ways? Do you find your way to be easier to flesh after the alum solution?
I haven't tried but my neighbor who's a trapper told me to try a pizza cutter to remove the membrane before pickling.
I'll try it and upload a video. Stay tuned...
My hides have a "fleshy" odor (it's not a rotten smell but it's not pleasant either) even when dry. Did I do something wrong? Will it go away? I did wash them. Thank you for sharing!
Try removing more membrane
If that doesn’t do it try rewashing and stretching again
Do you keep the tails on? Is the second bucket plain soap with no water?
Buckets- 1-dish soap and water/2-Scent eliminating shampoo-and water / 3-Just water for rinsing
I wonder if what you're doing now is the same things Ive seen in some of the movies. In particular, Dances with wolves, when they've go a buffalo hide on the ground and the women are scraping it with a flat bone or rock. Just a thought.
Love that movie.
Yes very much like that. They're removing the membrane from the hide.
Do you think this process would work well with fox pelts?
I’d give it a whirl!
Can you help me understand the difference between this process & egg tanning? Is it just a different process that yields the same results?
Also wondering the Alum which is Aluminum sulfate, is that a toxicity concern? We avoid aluminum in deodorant & food prep, but maybe this is a different kind of aluminum?
Thanks so much!
I haven't tried egg tanning. I've always used alum to soak the hides. It's a very easy process. You can open the pelt up and lay across a 8" pipe and use a pelt scraper amzn.to/3lCKcHo to do a lot of the work before placing into the alum solution. They come out really good. I'll put egg tanning video on the list for the future. Thanks!
I am interested in using rabbit or even bird pelts for dog training dummies, would the process be the same?
Give it a whirl it’s very easy
So, Salt & Alum in water and soak for a couple weeks, peal the membrane and soak again, then stretch until it's soft and white and that's it?
No leather conditioner or oil to keep the non-fur side supple?
You can add a leather conditioner if you like I don't
Hi Bobby, a quick question, can the salt alum solution be used for more than 1 batch of hides?
Yes
Would a fleshing knife be ideal for removing the membrane?
Absolutely I like this one
amzn.to/3YDu3Pv
I have a couple of hides which leather is like paper - dry and fragile. Is it possible to make it soft?
Sure if you have to you can re wet and work the leather some more also look at protal.
What can be used instead of aluminum sulfate for a hypothetical situation where it is not available?
Research tanning hides with Brain or using Eggs
Hello! Would you clarify where you cut the pelt in the beginning? Was it down the belly area? Thank you!!
That's right, down the belly with scissors.
Do you reuse the pickling solution for multiple batches?
You can
Hi! I just got some hides for the first time, they have go through the chemical proces already. Will the heat (it is in the 100s here) hurt them if I haven’t gotten all the membrane/flesh off yet? Can I just re wet them later and pull the rest off? Thanks!
I have never had my Hides sitting in that kind of heat
Keeping them in the shade, even going as far as burying half the bucket in the ground to keep it Cool Could be a benefit The insulation may help you.
Can you peg out the hide use a pressure washer to remove the membrane?
I’ve never tried that. If you have a power washer, I say give it a whirl. Let me know how it turns out.
I think this way of preserving the hide is a good idea, not lot of harmful chemicals...... But...don't use a scissor to cut the hide, that will cut loads of hair, and you get a ragged fur edge. Use a good and very sharp knife, like a exact knife/ box knife or a proper furriers knife..... I have kept rabbits for about 40 years, but haven't used the pelts I am sorry for that..... going to use this method now.
I use a scalpel . Love ALWAYS having a sharp blade ! I've even skinned and de-boned 2 big deer with just my scalpels.
Can you use vinegar instead of alum?
I know vinegar is a replacement for bleach. I haven’t tried replacing Alum with it, give it a whirl and let me know how it turns out. best of luck!
So after you removed the membrane and put the hides back in the pickle, how long did you leave them in the pickle solution before taking them out to wash them? second question: i did this whole process, the leather turned white, but once they dry they are stiff as boards again. Any suggestions? Thank you for ur wonderful videos!
I’d recommend watching and taking notes, I go over ma lot of info jut i the first few minutes.
I keep them in there for about a couple weeks in room temperature. You probably have more membrane to remove if they are hardening up or
you need to work the leather a little more- just wet them down and continue to stretch the leather after ringing water out.
Thanks. I’ve done exactly this process multiple times and have removed all possible membrane. they still stiffen when they dry. Thank you for taking the time to reply though. You have a great channel.
Why didn't you use the fleshing tool? I saw it on the table and in your Amazon link...
I use it some times but the Junior hides rip often
How do you dispose of the alum?
Alum is soluble in water and it’s considered to have a low toxicity level after being watered down you can contact a waste management after sealing or simply pour where you bury waste and compost on your property. Always take wells and run offs and drainage into consideration when disposing.
Have you heard anything about people having reactions to alum residue while wearing fur? Have you tried the stake and pound method? Or salt and egg method?
It’d be best if they’d line it with something. Not with rabbit fur no I haven’t.
Thanks
When you say, "Let you rabbit go four or five months; it makes a better hide," do you mean before you dispatch it?
Is that how long you wait to eat them?
And what do you do with the membrane?
I was thinking about giving it to my dog but maybe the stuff you cured it in isn't good...
So how do you dispose of the membrane and the curing solution???
That's right dispatch at 5 months. Hides are best when grown out to roaster size which is most popular in Europe. In the united states we like fryers. So this makes it difficult to get good hides unless you process breeders or breeders candidates that didn't end up growing into their shoulders or that sort of thing.
I'm interested in having meat rabbits, but I've always loved the feel of rabbit fur, so I want to get a meat rabbit that has nice fur too. Maybe American Chinchilla? Is the NZ White fur soft?
chinchilla, Satans, Rex , Havana's and Silver foxes all good choices
New Zealand's are a terrific all purpose animal with soft fur
I have American Blues. They are a dual purpose meat/fur breed. Beautiful color and super soft fur.
7 or 14 days in the solution before peeling the fat??? I'm a bit confused.
I start checking at 7 days if I can start to easily peal the membrane I will. I may start this process sooner than 14 days depending on the difficulty but I won't wait any longer than 14 days. Day 14 I will remove all membranes and complete that phase if I haven't yet. Hope that helps .
Does this method work in cold climates? Is it possible to let them sit on chairs indoors during the drying phase? It snows in my state during the rabbit hunting season.
Buckets need to stay around room temperature
I've had some pickling for about 5 days but I only put 1c salt & 1c alum for 3 gallons of water.
Then I'm going to double the pickle after fleshing and soak for another 10-14 days. This is the first time I've used this method.
Will it still be potent enough to cure the hides like they need to be? Now I'm worried that I didn't use enough pickling solution.
I've always added that exact amount and kept it at Room temperature. How's your pelts?
Do you need to freeze them or can you put them in fresh
If the pickle solution can be kept at room temp than you can throw them right in.
In Michigan I usually freeze until spring
Do you sell the hides to a trader or make the finished product yourself?
Don Martin I’ve been collecting them for years most of the time I give them away for gifts
Hey what If I use yodised table salt? Does it make any difference?
Iodine can stain the hide.
How do you dispose the used pickle solution? Thank you.
It’s not toxic
Try egg tanning it gets stupid soft
I will thanks
What you call aluminum sulfate? W
here we can buy it ?
Here you go! amzn.to/3tQ5HF3
I have rabbit fur coats, gloves and a stole. I have attempted to reline my coat and I’ve noticed the leather has gone hard in parts (Also on the gloves ) and it’s splitting. How do I keep it soft and stop it drying out? Is there anything natural I can put on to re condition it? 🙏
You can re-wet it and work the leather and then use a leather conditioner to keep it soft
6:14 may need to blurr that can there XD
😁
Are these hides from 10-13 week kits?
To get better hides let your rabbits grow out to at least four months or older but if you want tender meat harvest no later than 12 weeks
How do you remove the hair if you just want the leather?
Fur removing solution
Rabbit fur is soft and worth more with it left on
The aluminium sulphate where do you get that from , I,m interested in doing this but don’t know where to buy the Aluminium sulphate for doing the tanning ,thanks.
