What was supposed to be a fun project turned into one of the worst experiences of his life. A teen is now thanking doctors for literally piecing it back together. 10 News reporters, Shannon Viotaleed shows you his story
For any teenager pouring a glass of milk may seem like no big deal. But for 16 year old Briant Cummings, it's an accomplishment. Yeah. A year ago while working on a project to repair his boat, Briant to accidentally sawed off his hand.
I just turned the piece of metal and I bought it down like too fast, so bit and it's just stuck my hand through and cut it on an angle like you'd see the scar right there.
Emergency crews were ready to fly him from Boca Raton to Tampa General Hospital, but they left behind one important thing.
We forgot to hand out the house because we were freaking out. So the hand was still laying in the backyard.
Once he made it hand in all these were the doctors who helped save not only Briant's hand but his life
I realized that this was going to be a very complex case obviously, and that's when I put a call into Dr. Nydick to assist me with the case.
Time was ticking. Dr. Nidyck was off. He rushed to the hospital to help.
His circumstances were actually quite good. He was stable. He was young, he was healthy.
By the end of the surgery, Briant was able to move his fingers
I can open and close my hand like that.
Since this type of surgery isn't performed on a daily basis, doctors from Tampa General were able to learn from it.
We recently just implemented different measures to make things a little more efficient, just with equipment being available at all times.
Thanks to caring doctors, this teen has a second chance to do what he loves.
They will reel it in and cast it out. It was really cool. That was the first time, and then I just started fishing from then on, like again, really hard like I used to
In Tampa. If Shannon Viotaleed, 10 news.
Incredible story there. Now this surgery is also being used as a learning tool to help future doctors. Briant will have another surgery soon, and doctors hope you will be able to pinch his fingers once it's complete.

I wouldn't forget a body part at the house even if I'm freaking out because the body part would be very important to me

My grandfather amputated three of his own fingers by accident. Luckily it was a clean cut and they were able to be operated back on. Back then (in the 70s) Doctors said if he amputated his arm he would have been out of luck as the method was extremely experimental. Incredible how nowadays this is possible. Maybe there is hope that in the near future that we can reconnect or maybe even replace eyes and or spinal cords like that only time will tell what methods and technologies will emerge

Spinal cords is quite a big one, i mean we are just starting to reconnect severed spinal cords, the human body is just inadequate in regards to actually healing nerve damage

@@packerman7410 My nerves were pinched due to spinal stenosis when I was 27. Its been six years now and Im finally starting to get feeling back in my legs and other things. Not only does it take nerves a long time to heal but when they start, its extremely painful and doctors seem to not treat that kind of pain. Its very frustrating

Well if the tendons and muscles are intact maybe, but if they're damaged beyond self repair then it's over

I'm curious to know if he can still develop his hand's strength. Can he get back to the point he were to before the tragedy? Can he improve his whole arm's strength?

Rule of thumb is that the younger you are, the better the chances of making a good recovery from this kind of accident, especially developing the hand strength all over again
