      @EL 48 there are scenarios that vertical video works well - e.g videos solely for Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok. But, generally speaking, if your videos are going to be used in multiple places - e.g your website, UA-cam, Vimeo and all the ones mentioned previously, then horizontal video simply covers more bases.

      @joedidit3233 2 роки тому

      Even tall buildings are better recorded horizontally. Just back up a ways. Regardless, vertically recorded images will only look good on a tiny cell phone screen. Whereas horizontally recorded images will look good on televisions, laptop screens and even on phone screens if you turn the phone horizontally to view it. Horizontally is the only way that works well for viewing on all screens, whereas vertically only works well for viewing on tiny phone screens and nothing else.

    Recording/filming horizontally (in landscape mode) is *far* better than recording vertically (portrait mode). You get the most image & quality, for one.

    I don't even own a smartphone. I record video with an actual camcorder, and I HATE 9:16.
    I was under the perhaps mistaken impression that 16:9 is (except Instagram) universally device and platform friendly, since you can turn your phone 90º and watch a landscape video full screen. While when watching on a normal monitor, a vertical video fills only a third of the screen. And, I believe it only utilizes 1/3 of the pixels available on your phone. Whether that last bit is true or not is irrelevant.
    It's ironic that you referred to recording videos on your phone as, "filming", LOL. Where do you get your smartphone films processed, Walgreens. :-p

    • @StonesThrowMedia
      @StonesThrowMedia  2 роки тому

      Totally fair opinions and we're with you on the preference for 16:9 and just turning the phone 90 degs. However, many people approach it differently and some content will need to consider their audience watching it in alternative ways. Sometimes the best thing to do is create videos in multiple sizes for different platforms so they sit flush - nothing worse than a vertical video with the black sidebars on a normal monitor.
      Haha, well it is still filming whether filmed on a phone or a camera worth $100k ;-)

    Decades ago, a newbie shot a film, of a falling climber, and held the camera vertically as he would do with an SLR in that era. For years, when showing the film, the owner would wrestle the projector ninety degrees, for the viewing audience, laughing at the alternative watching a guy fall sideways. The entire concept of clueless vertical video started on cell phones, and was incorporated into dumb Instagram and Snapchat quickie stuff, then foisted into Facebook's dumb Story section where it is replicating like a mutating Covid strain. Shortest answer, if it is mostly going to be viewed on a computer screen, horizontal is a no-brainer. If it is only for others who live entirely on their iPhones, vertical is acceptable, but what do horizontals look like on those screens - don't they auto-rotate to horizontal format just by turning the phone? I want to know if I can even produce a horizontal video for the FB Story feature, or am trapped in the vertical dimension forever. Anyone know about this option?

    • @StonesThrowMedia
      @StonesThrowMedia  3 роки тому

      What would happen is you'll get black bars above and below when trying to put a horizontal video on a vertical output like a story. You could just fill it with text to go over the black bars. Or, do a vertical post and link to the horizontal elsewhere (eg UA-cam) - hope that helps?

    I don't have Instagram. So hearing that instagram does support films recorded in landscape doesn't exactly sell their platform, it's seen as a minus. I suppose there's a workaround where you can just upload the content to UA-cam and then share the link on instagram. Still though, it's almost 2021and if you're recording in portrait you're an amateur. There's an argument out there where you look like a silly soccer mum holding your phone horizontally to record when in fact you're seen as a professional who knows what you're doing. The silly soccer mums are the ones recording vertically so they could send it to their parents flip phones.

      You tube should ban vertical videos - just refuse to post them, period

      Film vertically if it will never be seen on anything but a tiny cell phone screen. Film horizontally if it will ever be seen on anything else.
