6:26 I'm so glad you brought this up. I always feel bummed out when deterrents cause way MORE issues to the general public, and knowing there's such a deep overlap in skating culture gives me a reinforced respect for the community's rebelliousness.
I probably have the most hours of any game ever with Skate 2. Legitimately never gets boring just skating around and finding spots. Skate 2 also had the best environment and world of any of the skate games. I think skate 3 had slightly better physics but the world didnt feel nearly as alive.
personally, I enjoy skate 1 physics for the tricks more in some ways, but if I could get a Skate 2 but with skate 3 off-board movement and skate 1 board physics, it would be a game from heaven.

@@V1VISECT6 Surprisingly, Skate 3 was my most played Skate game In the entire franchise.
From the create a park where I spent so many hours just messing around with the tools and making some trippy ass parks, to the gameplay and breaking the game as much as possible.
The glitches we're sorta part of the charm of the third game, and the many speed glitches you can pull off
The soundtrack of this game is absolutely fantastic, one of the best licensed soundtracks ever in a non-rhythm game. A game that opens with Sam & Dave in the main menu is a sight to behold.

I was a skater as a kid, and I loved the Tony Hawk games. I spent hours hanging out with my big brother playing those games until our fingers bled.
When skate came out, it was a mind blowing game. When Skate 2 came out, it was even more mind blowing. I still play to this day, even though I’m now a big fat dude in my 30s, I still like the skate culture and this brings me back to my youth.
Playing Skate 2 in my teenage years was so much fun and I could just skate around casually in the Overworld for hours without ever getting board. It's an absolutely phenomenal sports game experience from start to end.
Man I remember being shocked as like, a 15 year old learning that Reda was a real person and not just created for Skate lol

I’ve never been a fan of the skate games, I use to have blind hatred for it because I was big fan of the tony hawk games but you definitely made me intrested to try this game out.

i'm surprised you didn't mention the legendary soundtrack this game brought us. I strongly hold the belief that it is one of the best soundtracks ever. the compilation of songs is so well curated and made me discover music that I cherish to this day
When talking about the camera/video editing, you forgot one of the biggest things Skate 2 introduced, and that was the Filmer pack DLC. That changed the game and community

As someone who is also not a mega fan of Skate 3, its DLC maps are some of the best skate areas in the franchise. The Art Gallery and Danny Way's Hawaiin Dream specifically

Great review, although after such high praise - I thought you were going to maybe give it a 9! It's definitely my fave skateboarding game and even is in my top 50 games of all time.
i know DLC isn’t included in the review but one thing to not forget. they had Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory (season 1 layout) in the game and to this day when i hop on, i still love to go back and skate there. just pure nostalgia

One of my favorite games ever. I still have a clip I uploaded to YT of my favorite gap that I spent hours mastering.
As a skater, the best thing about skate 2 and 3 was the ability to place reset markers, that makes it feel real to me.
like, im in this huge city, that's all crazy skateable... but i wanna nail a flip-in-flip-out on THIS 9 set rail right now. In rea life, id try it a ton of times till i landed it, and thats how i find myself playing the skate games. For me thats the magic of it.

The glitching skater at the start reminds me of Homer Simpson running circles sideways on the floor.
Was watching the video, and when you said the physics drive you insane, a super loud thunder struck, right when you said it. Anyways, I love the review, this game was my childhood, so many good memories came from this game.

Hell yeah! Finally you reviewed this game! I've been waiting years for it!
Now, is this the best Skate game? Definitely! Is it the best skateboarding game though? Hummm, maybe. It's kinda hard to top THPS2. That game is still, to this day, one of the highest rated games on metacritic (not just one of the highest skateboarding games, but one of the hightest games in GENERAL!). But nevermind that! As much as I love THPS2, Skate 2 is still my favorite!
The grungeness, the soundtrack, the innovations, the feel of it all! All of it culminated in a unique experience I didn't even know it was special at the time when I played it! This game was awesome for what it was and my favorite thing to do in it was to just cruise around the city aimlessly, randomly find a spot I've never seen before and just lose myself to it, skating it for hours just for fun! And don't even get me started on hall of meat! I'd just wreck my skater for fun and complete the HoM challenges without even knowing what I did right! All for the sake of getting that sweet, juicy meat necklace! This game had style. Something that was unfortunately lost in Skate 3.
My main gripe with this game however, was the wonky walking movement. How the hell did they manage to make such fluid skating movement but such awkward walking movement? This kinda bugged me, because it was kinda hard to get around sometimes without the board. In the end, Tony Hawk Underground ended up nailing that better years prior.
I had the opposite experience when it came to the introduction to the skate. series. I kinda went backwards with going Skate 3, 1, and I’ve yet to get my hands on a copy of 2 to play.

Finally, I feel vindicated about that stupid backboard lip photo challenge. By the time I finally pulled it off, I didn't care what the photo looked like. I just wanted it done and over with.
I've always enjoyed this game when I was in my late teens....now in early 30's, I still do enjoy this game.

Aside from the pointless swearing, I really enjoyed this retrospective. Skate 2 was one of those (few) games that I really wanted to play, but couldn't, since I was on PC. (And I still wish they'd remake this specific one.)

I remember going to a friends house and seeing Skate 2 being played and then playing myself. Oh my, I was in awe with what I had seen! After playing Tony Hawks, the gameplay was something else, so realistic and I loved the open world aspect. Literally all I did was play that game when I was there. Then later on I got the game myself and absolutely loved it. I agree with everything you said. The gameplay, open world, environments, online, skate.reel, multiplayer, thrasher hall of meat, Big Black. Everything in this game was perfect and is way up there in one of the greatest games of all time for me.
But then I played Skate 3, and just like you, I didn't like it. There was something off, it just didn't feel realistic at all and felt too gamey. Plus the world didn't feel as open, the story was meh too. It didn't give me the same feeling I had when playing on the gritty streets of Skate 2.

fuck dude, i was trying not to snot in my cereal within the first couple of minutes lmao, my characters had his fair share of hand wafting his genitals and turning into a giant bin bag then spaghetti in skate 3. Trying to decide whether to add this one to my collection or not.
