  • From the iconic musicians Tegan and Sara comes a memoir about high school, detailing their first loves and first songs in a compelling look back at their humble beginnings. "High School" is the revelatory and unique coming-of-age story of Sara and Tegan Quin, identical twins from Calgary, Alberta, who grew up at the height of grunge and rave culture in the nineties, well before they became the celebrated musicians and global LGBTQ icons we know today. Written in alternating chapters from both Tegan's and Sara’s points of view, the book is a raw account of the drugs, alcohol, love, music and friendship they explored in their formative years.

they are so smart and sincere, you dont see many gay artists on the media periodt but when it happens is usualy talking about the happy aspects of our communit so to see them talking so strongly about the feeling of hating oneself even if you're proud of your sexuality that you dont have to be always happy and waving flags is so important.

This is such a good interview. They are so smart, articulate sincere and passionate! It’s inspiring. I love that they didn’t shy away from hard issues that many of us in the lgbtq community don’t address! So refreshing I bought their new memoir midway through the interview. Btw I’m that douche at concerts trying to film every song! I’m sorry, but it’s hard not to try and capture a moment. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I love their music and I also love their interactions and how witty and articulate they are. I'm not gay but, as they say, it's not about listening to 'gay music' or only like 'gay artists' in a vacuum: talent is talent, personality and humour are universal.

I’m 23 and I can remember my parents’ comments on how "strange" gay people were from back when I was four. Whilst not out right hateful, it still managed to instil an internalised homophobia within me that I’m still struggling with today. Society at large did not help, with its heteronormativity and its one-dimensional portrayals of coming out stories. Thank you for talking about this, Sara!

It's really great how they just not only put out a new record but also write a book and talk about important things that a lot of people struggle with, I feel very inspired.

JenSP I do too, like I just bought their book and I feel truly inspired to try and be the best me! Not a lot of music artists can leave me with that feeling. So genuine, and funny!

I’ve been a huge fan of Tegan and Sara for over ten years now.. I got a tattoo from The Con album artwork in 2009. It’s still the only music related tattoo I have; they mean so much to me. I’ve seen them 5 time and met them once. They are so nice and you can feel how much they care about their fans. ❤️

It's a good thing to accept yourself as you are. We are all social beings and although we are we also should remember our own individuality ..we are all unique people and it's alright to be yourself and kind to yourself & others !

"We are starting to be segregated" from minute 13 is one fucking astute comment. I'm so glad that you spoke up about a variety of Out artists. I've been trying to promote inclusion of a full wide spectrum of Q-BGLT musicians, and music by for and about us Q-BGLT folks and our strong allies, by creating the now 100s of curated playlists of music at my channel. It's actually the easiest thing for me to include Lesbian and Bisexual women because we have SO MANY GREAT Lesbian and Bisexual musicians producing among the very best music of the last 5 - 10 years. Once, Gay Men like myself would self-segregate into being fans of only certain kinds of music - you know the stereotypes. When I started this OutGayMusic channel, despite choosing "Gay" for brevity, I did and do everything I could and can to find and include the many deserving overlooked and undeservedly starving for attention Q-BGLT musicians from genres and styles that usually were not prioritized by the gay press. Now that so many Q-BGLT musicians from a broad range of styles can be Out and can retain control of their careers - two things that just weren't common even 5 years ago - we need to maintain that momentum, not backslide into segregated markets. Some great overlooked artists from the 90s and 00s need to be discovered by today's larger audiences (Tribe 8, Micah Barnes' Loud Boy Radio, Martin Swinger, Girlyman, Mark Weigle, Doria Roberts, Scott Free) and almost-forgotten-already trailblazers rediscovered (Pansy Division, BETTY, Melissa Ferrick, Bob Mould, Le Tigre, Kinsey Sicks, Joe Jackson). Now we can place joy and satisfaction in how well people express THEMSELVES instead of how they're marketed.

35 yrs old- I knew at 10 I was gay.. and by the time I reached 13-14 The feelings I had towards girls was way more intense than guys. Also at that time I started feeling ashamed and I hated the way I looked and felt. I completely agree that the culture of that time didn’t make it safe for us to be open with our sexuality

    • @brightstarlit

loramae steigelman definitely, I’m a gay man, but it was the same back then, I’m 34. I was ridiculed for being effeminate to the point of me sitting alone in the library during lunch, to avoid the torment of the kids at lunchtime. The librarian, all the supervisors knew what was going on. I’d skip lunch and go hungry everyday for 3 years binge eating when I got home. This started a cycle that I still struggle with to this day. What’s even worse, on the 1st day of 9th grade, freshman year of high school, a classmate called me a “ fat faggot”. I responded to her “fuck you bitch”. I was sent to in house detention 3 days and had to write a letter to her apologizing for my foul language, as well as the class and instructor for disturbing the peace. She on the other hand faced No consequences and only had a 1/2 hour of after school detention for her words, this cementing my distrust for authorities and catalyzing my need to rebel, probably caused my addictions etc that continue to this day. The 90s and early aughts were a terrible time for gay rights and teens.
