Tom Lehrer wrote and performed many clever, twisted songs in the 1950s and 60s - here’s my version of his classic “Oedipus Rex” with a few lyrical updates. You might need real therapy after watching it. :)

    ** LYRICS **
From the Bible to the hottest new vlogs
There’s one theme each one catalogues
Of all ideals they hail as good
    The most sublime is motherhood
There was a man though, who it seems
Once carried this ideal to extremes
He loved his mother and she loved him
And yet his story is rather grim
Some called him Pat. Pat Ricide. That’s a dad joke.
There once lived a man named Oedipus Rex
You may have heard about his odd complex
His name appears in Freud's index
    Cause he loved his mother
His rivals used to say quite a bit
That as a monarch he was most unfit
But still in all they had to admit
    That he loved his mother
Yes, he loved his mother like no other
His daughter was his sister and his son was his brother
Tried to avoid the prophecies but strolled right into their atrocities
Though Oed got famous for his ploy
Just wait, this fate would not bring him joy
    For history’s biggest Mama’s boy
    Sure loved his mother
When he found what he had done
He tore his eyes out, one by one
A tragic end for a loyal son
    Who loved his mother
So be sweet and kind to mother now and then have a chat
Buy her candy or some flowers or a brand new hat
But maybe you had better let it go at that
Or you may find yourself with a quite complex complex
And you may end up like Oedipus
(Better to marry a duck-billed platypus)
Than end up like old Oedipus “T.” Rex
Oh, that’s all our time for today. I’ll see you next week.

Just goes to show Tom Lehrer has still got it after all these years. The references may be so dated as to qualify as historical, but it's still just as funny. And he continues to prove how cool he is by making his work public domain and enabling things like this.

Crazy how relevant he is to this day.

Ever since Disney bought Fox, fans have been making jokes that Frank N Furter from Rocky Horror is now a Disney Princess, and then Deadpool fans have done the same (I even think Ryan Reynolds himself tweeted about it) and so a rap battle between the two of them and their side characters (like Riff-Raff and Magenta with Frank for example) arguing over their status as Disney Princesses would be hilarious fun. :)

He recently gave all his music rights to the public domain, which opens up a TON of possibilities for covers!
(I read it's normally something like 70 years after the death of the artist? That means if someone wants to cover a song they not only have to pay rights, but have to figure out *who* to pay- which descendant is the heir? By the time 70 years have passed, does anyone even remember the artist and care anymore? I think Mr. Lehrer made a genius move here, as his works can be kept alive so much more this way!)

The thing I always find funny about the Oedipus complex is that if the character Oedipus actually had it he might not have had quite such a dramatic downfall.

Except he was abandoned to the elements so soon after birth that he was far too young to even begin to. Also there's the small matter of how Freud made that all up so Viennese society would stop ostracizing him for daring to reveal that incest was rampant amongst them.

In Oedipus's defense he didn't actually have an Oedipus complex.
