Adia Victoria: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 чер 2016
- June 30, 2016 by BOB BOILEN • At first, I was drawn in by Adia Victoria's languid guitar sound: In her hands, it practically has a drawl of its own. Then I heard her stories - never trite, often personal, always potent - which you can hear in the words that open her Tiny Desk concert. "I don't know nothing 'bout Southern belles," she sings in "Stuck In The South," adding, "but I can tell you something 'bout Southern hell."
Adia Victoria's voice is powerful and direct, with no artifice; it carries the singular perspective of a Southern black woman with a Seventh Day Adventist upbringing, who never felt like she'd fit in. She recently put out her first album, Beyond The Bloodhounds, and two of the songs here ("Stuck In The South" and "And Then You Die") are from that record. It's a brilliant debut, though I highly recommend seeing her perform live for the full experience.
Beyond The Bloodhounds is available now:
iTunes: itunes.apple.c...

Set List:
"Stuck In The South"
"And Then You Die"
"Heathen"

They are great! I'm loving her voice.

Wow. She's incredibly talented. I'm sad I'm discovering her music so late. I'm in love.
Judging from the comment section, no one knows what 7th chords are. The last song was by far my favorite.
😂😂😂😂😂
She's a revelation, amazing artist, glad I was exposed to her sound, her music on TCM! It's hard to hear it all but the cream always rises to the top! Just took a while to get to my ears but well worth the wait!!!
Wow 🤩 her voice hits something deeeeep down inside me . So so good 🙏🏽👏🏽🙏🏽👏🏽🙏🏽👏🏽🙏🏽👏🏽🙏🏽
I really like this! She has one of those voices, I could just sit and listen to her talk if I could. I see a few people in the comments don't like her guitar; I on the other hand find it warm and comforting. Off to listen to the album on Spotify; thanks to NPR for introducing me to this artist.
her guitar IS in tune guys, it's just the 7th chords she's playing to give that bluesy feel.
Oh my god is she good!! I love her unique singing style. She’s moody and real. I’m buying her cd today!!
Saw her and her band last weekend live at WXPN MUSIC FESTIVAL. Her Performance is deep, spine tingling theater with a message. The set was too short!
One of the most genuine voices I've heard for a long time, along with Valerie June and Eileen Jewell.
I am a huge doom/stoner rock/metal lover. This gothic blues fits in well with those genres. I really enjoy her voice. It clearly is an aquired taste.
Same here...huge doom metal fan. I was immediately drawn to her music.
This is a girl following her muse, interesting sound, this could be a soundtrack for a David Lynch movie. It's nice to hear something a little bit different.
Her voice is based of the struggle of the black woman in the south. It aint supposed to be pretty. I actually went to church with her and have known her since she was 6 years old. She can sing very well. She sung in our church choir. Maybe its her message that is abrasive to many.
Douglas Jones wtf she is unbelievable artist. I love her music. People putting her down are missing something.
Right on! Her voice is great, her guitar playing magnificent,, and her songs brilliant. Seeing her in DC on 2/19/19 and can't wait.
I feel this song so deeply, not because I’m a POC but because she is just so good.
I saw her in Milwaukee in June. I think she has the blues of Billie Holiday and the angst of a young Alannis Morrisette. This is a great combination.I'd love to see her do more jamming on guitar. She's quite good, actually.

I feel you. 🧙♀️🌹🎺
EXCELLENT and Thank You Adia and band.
I like her way all the way. She graces the cover of the latest "Oxford America" lucky me! Two other covers but I have hers. I'm all set. I saw the cover and thought wow who is that woman? Well now I know and am glad I do. Unique is right; her own person, true too.
To everyone saying the guitar is not in tune... It is in tune. Believe it or not that's what a 7 chord sounds like lol
They're awesome. I love her. Brilliant writer, and performer. Stunningly great, and refreshing.
Aida Victoria! One of a kind! Evolution I’m enjoying hers! Play on Sister !
This reminds me of Danielle Dax! Unique! Powerful!
A new true sound, a unique voice, with talent, skill and perspective beyond her years.
this... this is just phenomenally good.
Very unique sound
not really
I don't understand?
Who else sounds like her.
I'm not saying you're wrong, I just genuinely want to know. I've really started to like Adia recently. I don't understand the hate.
Check out Julia Stone for a very similar folk voice. Julia's white, but I also saw an African American folk singer last year who's songs, and acoustic guitar reminded me a lot of Adia's. Her voice was a little harsher, and unfortunately I don't remember her name. Granted Aida is the only folk singer I know wt a baby voice, singing about such hard topics. It shouldn't work, but she sounds outstanding!
Incomparable... just like.....
just discovered Adia through spotify and i immediately fell in love with her music, her voice sounds uniquely beautiful yet badass at the same time. wish more people recognized this artist
Her voice 😍😍😍😍🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰😍😍😍 is MESMERIZING!!
Love the ending part at the 6:48 mark...so pretty
wow, I've been looking for her and didn't know it. in your face. love this.
Jason Isbell sent me! I love her music what a discovery to make (only two years late - story of my life!), I'm sort of going through her music backwards Would love to see Adia over here in the UK.
I really like her vibe.
I'll be looking forward to seeing her when she rolls through Southern Oregon.
beautiful
Wonderful talent!
one of the strongest npr performances to date
wow, I love this. just downloaded her album.
I listened to her latest album in 2021 and she sounds completely different. Her vocals are a full tone. I don't know if she pitched her voice up intentionally here, but now it's like she had a lot more vocal training.
Oh my friggin' Lord -- A woman with guitar! Not since Memphis Minnie someone so cool so talented. I am now a really big fan. Wow! Awesome.
Listen to Ruthie Foster a blues singer who can really, really pick a guitar
I'm diggin this. I really like her unusual voice
Love your voice and message.
Everything that is really great and inspiring is created by the individual who can labor in freedom.
Jesus wept. It's very easy to criticise... I bet half these people commenting aren't good enough to get a gig on here, and if they were, they would have enough class about them to show some encouragement. You know you're doing something right when people like this start piping up. Keep going, sounds wicked to me, and you're only just getting started! All the the best for the long unrelenting future! Xx
The people who left negative comments about the performance in this video are obviously from the shallow, Baby Ruth littered end of the human gene pool.
i love your voice, and style
I dig it
Love that woman - heard her in PDX last week at skypelivestudio - MEZMERIZED.
When your an artist you don't try to fit in but you are true to yourself, if you don't like it, don't listen to it...I DO!
I love her
Buenísimo !!! No los conocía " Ahora siii !!! Yess
Fiona Apple at half speed without the electronic backing tracks. I kinda dig it.
I think they should get Rest, Repose to perform on this channel
Beautiful music beautiful lady
this is powerful!
I am positive her guitarnis like that on purpose. I actually quite like this.
I loved it. Totally get why the guitar is slightly retuned. It really spoke to me. I'd be curious to hear her do a straight blues cover.
I like her voice.
Best version of "Heathen" ever!!!
golden
super merci
she's brilliant.
I love this.
I'm saying right now get out freaking badass I tell you what I love that 7 chord
Superb
Her voice reminds me of bob Dylan. Distorted, raspy, but a real storyteller.
Raspy yes, but I'm not sure what story she is telling. It doesn't resonate and I really don't know what she is saying. That doesn't make for a good story teller.
Just because the story doesn't resonate with you doesn't mean it's not there.
+Jacob Clark and that is the true beauty of music. It is so versatile that even though one might not appreciate it, another will. We're all receptive to different things.
Yeah! Maan!!! Cooooool LIVERPOOL.
yall should get houndmouth to do a tiny desk concert
Unique indeed
awesome
I like it.
Addictive.
Love it
my type of friend. 🖤xx
top tiny desk live
Top Tier stuff
I'm expecting Sookie, some vampires and a couple of fang bangers to walk out.
So much cool shit in the back round to look at
wonder what Valerie June thinking?
Very Kat Edmunson-like voice, nice.
Her voice kinda reminds me of a mix between Fiona Apple and Ane Brun.
the second song was just about to open up but the people started clapping so they just ended it
revisiting this - im not sure. the bassist and the drummer both have their hands off their instruments and adia was literally bowing signifying the end.
when i saw her at afropunk, her guitar isn’t tuned all the way and sounds distorted because that’s her sound. modern blues. i think this is why she was so angry when she was setting up for her set at afropunk
Dig it.
i really like this. her voice made me think of Malvina Reynolds
"Stuck in the South"
"And Then You Die"
"Heathen"
;D
Props to all of you who find something to like in this. I'm not able to see it.
you don't got enough props for everyone who loves Adia Victoria now, Mr. T.O., let alone..... got enough props for all Adia Victoria's future fans, Mr. little Centre of the Universe Northsomewhere Town. you got your 6 up your ass, homes. what you actually can't see..... is how many views your own rip-off cover videos are getting compared to all the fuss being made about Adia Victoria's talented originality .
why you gotta drag such a nice, warm, young, southern lady down with your big dump of old, cold, wet, slushy snow bro? this is NPR Music here, little man, meant to be educational public performances for free useage by artists who care enough to contribute to our humane public domain. gonna be damn near impossible to find tickets for Adia Victoria's concerts soon.
you might wanna get your eyes fixed because the rest of the world saw Adia Victoria crawling out from under this rock and roll rag a long time ago. you be deaf, dumb, and blind bro homie in the big snowy......

I didn't realize Adia Victoria was lauded in 2015 by the arbiters of indie rock cred over at Rolling Stone Magazine, alongside other bands that are now taking the world by storm like Marmozet, Yellow Claw and Aquilo.
Of course Rolling Stone's stupid listicles don't mean shit. But Ii's great if you like her - I was sincere when I said props to people who are able to see something likeable in this music.
Just saw her last night--when she really opens up and sings, it's phenomenal. When she coos and shifts her eyes around in pretense and persona, not as interesting.
interesting...I'll give it a second chance
Mor Karbasi Now!
she needs buzz feiten tuning for those chords. but guys its supposed to sound a little grimey...
Wondered what all the comments were about then I got to the last song -_-
top
different
YOOOO THAT'S MY COUSION
Innovative music has always had the same reaction. Half love it. Half think it’s shit
O-F*ing-Kay
these guys on somethin...
macy gray reminiscent
black is the new pink
Very nice, I like the vibes! not a fan of the bass distortion tho.
***** True, but does that change anything?
I mean yea. You totally missed the blues she does on the acoustic guitar.
I loved the distortion :)
The first song was excellent, perhaps the best one.
Is it just me or does that sound like a baritone guitar?
wow, that guitar is very abrasive against her unique voice...
🔥🔥🔥
Who is listening this in march
This performance is beautiful
1:47 💗💞
👇👇👇💓
Well.... it's music. I'll clap for that alone.
720 2812 2017 HAPPY NEW YEARRR 201888
??
playing slightly detuned guitar was always forgivable when you have plenty of soul to spill.
that Laid guitar is out of tune?
It's really not, it is a 7 chord, which most people aren't familiar with.
