I still remember this. What a great intro theme for the 1986 World Cup! FIFA should adopt this as the offical World Cup Musical Score. Does anyone know where I could find this score on CD?
As much as I loved Charlie Jones' broadcasting, he was awful at soccer, but a true professional. He spent most of the broadcasts acting as peacekeeper between Paul Gardner and Ricky Davis...ESPN aired about 25 matches that year, all with broadcasters in studio. NBC aired seven matches, all on weekends, with broadcasters on site.
The musical theme used is Herb Alpert's "1980" which can be found on his RISE album. It was originally commissioned by Don Olhmeyer of NBC Sports to be used as the theme for the 1980 Olympics that the US ended up boycotting. ua-cam.com/video/EJZ_Jb06Kuw/v-deo.html
This is categorically false. NBC only broadcasted a handful of weekend games (like 7) so no the camera work wasn’t produced by NBC. They barely cared about the World Cup.
goldeneve ABC and ESPN showed the 1982 World Cup ( ABC showed only the final ) NBC showed only 7 games in 1986 and TNT showed the 1990 World Cup and ABC and ESPN showed the 1994-2014 World Cup Fox showed the World Cup this year . SIN ( Now Univision showed the 1978 World Cup two months later because back in the 1970s in the United States , the World Cup was only showned in Close Circut Theaters like Madison Square Gardens Felt Forum .
The theme is Herb Alpert's "1980," from his 1979 album Rise. It was originally a cue meant for the ill-fated 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics broadcasts.
Also used as the theme of WWF's Tuesday Night Titans 1984-86.
Nice shot at the end of Don Criqui wiping his nose as dot matrix printers are going.
Epic opening, featuring NBC's then-new current logo, which had been in use for a little over a couple months at the time.

Mexico 70 where pele won his last world cup and 3rd cup
I prefer the Spanish one because it’s has so much rhythm on it like Mexico 86 *trumpet* Mexico 86 El Mundo unido un ballon
Love the dot-matrix printer sounds in the background at the end!

ricomajestic No they shouldn't. It wasn't so epic.
@@lukasjohnson8385 you uncultured piece of shit this is one of the greatest themes in FIFA history

I swore that the '86 cup was not shown on tv. It is the only cup I have missed since '78 b/c I came at 12 y/o to the U.S in 1984, BUMMER!
It'sMe Shame. It was the last great World Cup
It was broadcast on ESPN and NBC.
RIP Diego Maradona
Do anybody have the full NBC broadcast of this game?

NBC'S 86 & TNT'S 90 Coverage was awful from my experience they had commercials during THE GAME. I don't know if ESPN's coverage was like that in 1982.
@@BAYAREA-kd1ig 1994 was the first time it was taken seriously since they hosted. but the nbc/espn partnership in 86' had a good theme at least, lol
