Growing up in NYC I've been listening to the Harptones since the 50's yet this acapella version can still take your breath away, not to mention, put a tear in your eye.
we sang this song at a high school talent show in 64, and won. 3 guys 2 young ladies. we killed it. that event is a distant memory, but hearing this song put a smile on my face and took me back 53 years to my youth.....thank you
Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful!!! III always love Mr. Willie Winfield and the Harptones!!! One of the first and greatest all-time Doo Wop groups from the East Coast!!!!🎶❤️🎶
Absolutely amazing & exquiste!! One of the best and most legendary groups on all time!! Linda Champion was at her best here. Harptones still going strong from 1953 with 3 original members!
That's called a lession on how it's done ladies and gents. 4 part harmony to perfection....Mr. Cita is the ome whos putting tbat really pretty jazz harmonic 4th note om the bottom......Wow! Their blend so beautiful. No voice is louder than any other allowing each voice and harmony note to be heard. Their volume dynamics. are perfect. Everyone is in perfect key.and -they are singing effortlessly..... 4 part harmony-no omenis hitting anyone else's note...Not a basic 1-3-5 triad that's for sure....Cita is on the bottom actually singing 9ths and 11tbs... (My man Jimmy Merchant would appreciate that for sure.. Not just Doo.Wop legends- legends legends who unfortunately never got their well deserved credit. I'd put any group in any genre from any period of time and id bet a million dollars they couldn't come close to even comprehend this arrangement or deliver it as smooth and cool aa they just did right here....and the folks in Cleveland who decide who gets into the Rock Hall of Shame probally never even heard of Cita or Willie or Linda...... This is as close to vocal perfection as it gets....... And that's he was Mr. Cita, and he was Willie Winfield and they were The Harptones......speaks for itself!!! ..You can't teach that!!!!!!
Achapella! They’re great doowop! 3 wishes one of my faves! Jus wat my husband wished for wen we met 46 yrs yrs ago. I dedicate that song for V Day for he passed Nov 9 2021 n listened to on old vinyl album he has abt 10x in tears. I luv n miss him so. He loved the harp tones
Acappella is the best way to learn various harmonic styles/ ranges.....its the Best in my experienced opinion and I've done Bands/Groups back in the day as well....but nothing compares to 🎶Acappella🎶👍Thanks for Sharing...
I am sure I will listen to this every day for a long time. Truly great harmony and an amazing performance. I am very grateful to schrooms73 for posting this.
These blends don't happen overnight, sometimes it takes months to really blend. This is the real thing. One of my favorites out of about 200,000 doo-wop I have, Jimmy C.
I think the Harptones, for me, epitomize classic doowop. There were many gtreat grous but none better. And this is my favorite of theirs. The original was on here for a while but seems to have been pulled. This performance is amazing.
This is great I play this with my headphones on and and do the bass harmony along with it cos its missing from this performance they still sound absolutely great anyhow
I think Raul Cita (their arranger & pianist) was vocalizing on this video?!! And with Linda Champion and Marlow Murray doing their soprano and tenor parts, this Harptones lineup really rocks! My strictly amateur group loved singing this gem during the early 1960's along with the standard Harptones gems "My Memories of You", "Sunday Kind of Love" and "Life is But a Dream" ... and that's not dismissing their other gems like "Shrine of St. Cecelia", etc. Schrooms73 can always be depended upon .
WILLIE WINFIELD JUST RETIRED NOT TOO LONG AGO. THEY GAVE HIM A TRIBUTE AT THE GOODFELLAS DOO WOP CLUB IN QUEENS. HE SANG AND SOUNDED GREAT. 👍👏👏👏👏❤❤💃🕺👠👠👄10+
i just read further down and found what i was looking for. thanks AL D, for providing the names of the others with Willie and Catlarry for the place and year.
great doo-wop group that used harmony instead of sh-booms and other doo-wop sounds. although they are remembered as a doo-wop group they always used actual words, they were great
This group configuration was together from 1972 til 1991. The fact that Willie Winfield looks so young leads me to believe it was performed in the early 1970’s. Not in the 1980’s when he would have been 50+ years old. He would have been in his early 40’s in 1972. I could be wrong because we all have known people who don’t seem to age as rapidly as others. But he sure doesn’t look to be in his 50’s.
MAGNIFICENT AS EVER😆 I AM THE GIRL, WHO BROUGHT YOUR COUSIN " CAROL BLADES" FOR AUDITION TO SEE MY UNCLE 😂GEORGE GOLDNER. AND SO CAROL SANG WITH YOUR GROUP FOR A WHILE. CAROL AND I GO ALONG WAY BACK IN THOSE GOOD OLD DAYS SHE AND HER SISTER LILIAN 😆 BLADES I KNEW VERY WELL. MY REGARDS TO HER AND I HOPE SHE IS DOING WELL.😊 GEORGE GOLDNER NIECE TONI 👍✌

One of my favorite groups singing one of my all-time favorite songs. I agree, it looks like a 1980's performance. Just gorgeous!

great doo-wop group that used harmony instead of sh-booms and other doo-wop sounds. although they are remembered as a doo-wop group they always used actual words, they were great
WOW
Was she on the original version? .Linda Champion?
Definitely not. The Harptones in their heyday were always an all male group.
the academy of music?
Awesome! Where, when is this from?
This group configuration was together from 1972 til 1991. The fact that Willie Winfield looks so young leads me to believe it was performed in the early 1970’s. Not in the 1980’s when he would have been 50+ years old. He would have been in his early 40’s in 1972. I could be wrong because we all have known people who don’t seem to age as rapidly as others. But he sure doesn’t look to be in his 50’s.
@catlarry Sure No problem... OK on the correction of where this was.
what year was this performed ? Looks like about 1985. Is that the piano player singing with them ?
Everyone says 1981.
Did some research and decided this had to be in the early 70’s. He would have been in his 50’s in the 80’s. He looks too young for that time frame.
anybody know what year they did this , willie looks pretty young . don"t matter , it is TREMENDOUS ! this music is gone , TOO SAD .
1981
Willy is great
I'm guessing early 80s (the Ambient period)?
Early 70’s. He would have been in his 50’s in the 80’s.
I'd like to see todays groups try to sing accapella like this. You'd have to put cotton in your ears.
She was GREAT: ''WHAT DID I DO ?'' 13 YEARS OLD ?
Carol was White, correct?
Great song by Raul Cita sung beautifully by Willie and the group. The lighting could have been better.
i did sing it to her
