    I have a Lanikai mahogany tenor ukulele that I bought new about 6 months ago, the model is MA-CET. It's my first ukulele, so I wasn't sure what the quality actually is on these instruments, but I'm happy with it. I figured, just based on price that it wasn't a lower quality instrument, I'm happy to know that it's a good brand for this price range.
    I just put a new set of D'Addario strings on it, the fluorocarbon strings with the non wound low G string. I don't think the strings are quite as bright as the original strings, but that may just be the result of the low octave G string. I like the sound of these strings for the kind of music that I've been playing in it. I'm still just learning how to play the ukulele, so it's quite the adventure.
    I have a few youtube videos with me playing it if you would like to see a rank amateur play a Lanikai. :-)

They have a specific sound that I like. So I’m super excited to get it. I so can’t wait for it to get here. 💜

    I lucked into buying a Lanikai MAS-CET solid mahogany tenor when the Kala Koa I bought in Feb '19 from a dealer online arrived damaged and had to be returned. It was the last Kala Koa they had in stock, so I chose the Lanikai instead.
    As a retired guy who decided to learn to play the uke, I really had no experience to draw on, and made the decision based on appearance and features.
    When the ukulele arrived I was impressed. While I'm a real novice when it comes to instruments like this, I have experience building mahogany sea kayaks and lapstrake canoes, and craftsmanship of construction is something I can recognize in objects of art made of wood. The Lanikai uke is gorgeous, finely finished, and sounds like it. I love holding it, playing it, and owning it. Thanks for your review.

    • @OneMusicSchool
      @OneMusicSchool  5 років тому

      Oh no! If that ever happens again, gently tug on the strings to loosen them and keep playing it to let the strings settle; however, the new Lanikais are pretty dope :).

    • @shannonlandis5224

      Oh I did... I tried so many things...couldn’t even get through a song. In fact, if you tuned and then compared the same note on two strings...totally out of tune! Hubby is a guitar player and he tried all the tricks over and over. And he couldn’t get it stay in tune and suggested a set up. But that was going to cost almost as much as the uke. So we took it back, spent an extra $50 and I am so much happier!

    I was so excited to see this! I have the mahogany in a tenor size. Also, the acacia with no cutaway in a concert size. I LOVE them both!!! They feel wonderful to hold! They are beautiful to look at. Most importantly, the sound is beautiful! I am not a good player yet. I admit I got very carried away when I saw that I could get them for a low monthly payment with no interest! I keep them in a room where I monitor the humidity and temperature. The humidity has not been a problem for me yet in the area where I live. I have turned on a whole room humidifier a few times. I run those anyway if the air gets to dry so that is not a hardship for me at all.

    This was the best review I’ve ever seen. Truly. You were so informative but also so entertaining. Your playing is amazing. I’d love some tutorials of some of those fast strumming songs. I also loved the editing (was that spongebob?). And your friends at the music store were super fun too. I also appreciate having a review of some mid level instruments. I am really not interested in starter ukes anymore and they seem kind of all the same. It’s when you cross that $300 mark that they start becoming more intentional works of art. And these two are definitely impressive. Great video, Karie ❤️

      @OneMusicSchool  5 років тому +2

      This means so much to me coming from you because I know you are so passionate about the instrument. Yes, that was Sponge Bob :). Thank you for your feedback about reviewing higher to mid level ukuleles. I think it's time to do so. I'm in the process of making a video about buying your second ukulele, so I'm curious as to what is important to you if you were to purchase a uke $300 or above? Thank you again. I really appreciate every time you're here.

      One Music School At this price point, playability is super important to me. My music stores don’t carry the higher price point ukuleles so I have to purchase them online. I only do so if it is from a reputable place that I KNOW sets up every instrument before sending them (ie Uke Republic, Mim’s ukes or The Ukulele Site). I also like when they show photos of the exact instrument I’m purchasing (not stock photos). I like performing so I look for ones with a pickup, however, I also know that can be installed later. A nice case is definitely a plus because I have spent $85 on just a case before. Finally, looks😊 Like I said, I consider them to be works of art so I also look for ones that make me happy just looking at them. Can’t wait for your video!

    I've read some reviews saying that the new solid wood Lanikai's have thicker soundboards than other brands in this price range, which limits the volume and richness of the sound. Did you notice this? For the price they are asking for these ukuleles, there are a lot of great options like Pono, Opio, and Martin.

    • @OneMusicSchool
      @OneMusicSchool  5 років тому +4

      I do agree that the price is that of a Pono, Martin, and a higher end Kala. The soundboard is thicker which could limit volume of the instrument, but that could also be the materials in which the instrument is made out of that limits the sound. Touring and gigging can cause a lot of wear and tear on an instrument when in transit. The overall features were chosen so that it would be able to withstand the road without sacrificing the tone of the instrument. The fact that they already have strap buttons indicates that it already has the bracing and structure to be able to have strap buttons. It does have a bit of weight to it, so that might dampen the sound a bit, but didn't mind. The overall structure of the instrument is very solid and built to last. I do love the feel of the instruments, and they play beautifully. I did take one on a recent trip to see how if would hold up on the plane and the drastic temperature changes, and it was great. Thanks for leaving your comment. I appreciate it.

    Hi Katie, that's a great opening, with your friends and the flashback, ahahaha. Fun unboxing, looked like you were thinking of jumping into the empty box for a sec:). Beautiful cases, thanks for pointing out the extra headstock protection. Both of these Lanikai look stunning. Ahhh, meets your standards, the fragrance of quality. The Acacia has awesome projection when you were finger picking. Those were super subscriber questions. Thanks for all the tech info, appreciate your detailed insights.
    Hi Travis, Hi Mike, great playing blindfolded, you guys got skills. Passes the smell test too:) They like! Great to hear what they thought. Hahahaha, "several song filled hours later" you're so funny. Glad you showed the case again when explaining the prices, that helped with the sticker shock. One thing peaked my curiosity. The Acacia with pickup is $100 more, yet the Mahogany is $160 more than the non pickup version. Any idea why there's such a price variation? Thanks for this video. Totally worth the time and effort that went into creating this unboxing review. Happy day.

    • @OneMusicSchool
      @OneMusicSchool  5 років тому +1

      I'm so glad that this was entertaining :). I really tried to narrow it down to 15 minutes. I originally had two hours worth of footage to comb through. I thought Travis and Mike were essential to this, and I'm so happy that they helped me with this video. My favorite was their reaction to the brand.
      I would say the price difference is due to the materials. One is solid mahogany and the other is only solid top acacia with laminate sides. The laminate sides makes an instrument more affordable without sacrificing tone so to speak. The top of the instrument is where it really counts because it's in direct contact with the bridge and saddle transferring the vibrations from the strings to the top. I'm so happy that you liked it and saw the effort. I really appreciate it.

    I haven't played a lanikai yet (well, actually I have only played two different brands so far :D), but I think they look very beautiful and if I had the money I'd definitely get one. I like the Solid Top Acacia a little better, because it would be easier to film a video with it :D

    Hello~I just kinda random found your videos when I'm looking for buying the ukulele guide. I love how honest you are, and especially you said that tried out more as possible before buying the ukulele. Because of the lockdown, i don't think i'm possible to buy a ukulele in the store right. However, based on your videos, i'm looking for a warm and bright sound ukulele in concept size, and the brand could be the Kala. Would you mind give me some suggestions? Or will you do another comparison video sooner or later? I'm very looking for you other guiding videos. Thank you for taking your time to read my comment.

      Hi! Thanks for watching and I’m glad that you want to pick up the ukulele. I actually have a couple of updated buyers guides that I made in December, so I’ll link those below. They have over sound samples from over 30 ukes. I discuss size, material, and brand. I hope these help, and let me m ow if you have any questions 😀.

    Hi! I was wondering if you could maybe recommend a ukulele! I’m currently looking for a concert, acoustic/electric ukulele (with strap buttons) with a $350 budget. I’m a fairly new player, but I’m going to start playing with my church band! There are so many options out there and I’m feeling overwhelmed.

    So with concert cutaways I noticed the uke itself vibrate. I know you mentioned the action I got the all solid acacia lanikai tenor, and the action was pretty high but nothing going to a music store and getting a hand didn't fix

    • @OneMusicSchool
      @OneMusicSchool  5 років тому

      You are correct. If the action is high, it probably just needs a good setup and then you're good to go. Thanks for pointing that out :).

      @@OneMusicSchool I will say I totally love my Lanikai 100% recommend for people wanting to make that step for high quality ukulele in mid-range price. Some of your Hawaiian brands are easily double that. I got a really good deal on mine but the full $450 for all solid wood with no pick up has been worth every penny

    When ukuleles have a cutaway why is it always electric? I’ve yet to see an acoustic ukulele with a cutaway.

    • @lanikai
      @lanikai 5 років тому

      We do it for style of playing. We have found from talking to players, that if they are needing to amplify their uke, they also needed access to the extended range, and the cutaway helps with that! You never know though, maybe we will do a cutaway on an all acoustic model someday!

    Do you put some kind of dog treats in the ukulele? Or are they trying to cheat and smell real wood. Me thinks you need to clothes pin their noses?
