Here's some facts: Rowan Atkinson modeled his performance as Mr. Stringer after Basil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers. John Cleese was the original choice for Mr. Stringer and fellow Python Michael Palin is one of the witches in drag. Also Mr. Bean came out 4 months before this film came out. Anjelica Huston's German accent is her own, she wasn't dubbed. If you get the chance look up the actress playing the Grandma, Mai Zetterling this film was one of her last. She was a film director as well as a actress. This was Jim Henson's last film he oversaw, he died the week before the general release date. Roald Dahl tried to boycott the film due to his dislike of the changes and the new ending, he would try to prove people off seeing it outside his local cinema while battling his last illness.
my favorite films, omg the whole witch meeting scene and the grand hhigh witch's face reveal is my favorite scene of the film, the makeup and prosthetics were super amazing. that and I love that she was as hideous as can be yet she's wearing rhinestone jewelry and looking glamouress, the whole look is slaying and I'm loving it.
The blonde witch became a good witch the moment the Grand High Witch ordered her to go to her room and she said “I Quit!!!” Because, if you noticed, her hair is now real instead of a wig. And she doesn’t need gloves because she has human hands instead of claws.
The remake was godawful. It was basically a comedy. Barely connected to the book or this one. Think “Everyone Hates Chris”. This film is a masterpiece. Scared an entire generation of children.
While I definitely think the original film is superior, I think the remake did follow the tone and story of the book more closely, especially the ending! And while no one can top Anjelica Huston's marvelously wicked performance, I thought Anne did a respectable job! She definitely frightened me a bit!
The biggest indication that she became a good witch is that she's no longer wearing gloves. There is a phrase involving wearint gloves means you're hiding something
Brilliant performance by Anne Lambton playing the witch who tried to tempt Luke from the treehouse. Interestingly, she is an aristocrat, being the daughter of the late 6th Earl of Durham and sister to Lady Lucinda Lambton, broadcaster and writer.
Luke remains a mouse in the book, the tacked on happy ending enraged roald dahl and he wanted nothing to do with the film following its release. He praised Anjelica for her performance.
The first film is better since it stays more true to the books tbh, the second is a bit more American Exceptionalist in its portrayal and diverts more from the original material. Plus Anne Hathaway's portrayal of the Grand High Witch was subpar compared to Angelica Houston.
The remake was too light they tried to make it close to the book but tbh the script was cringey and Anne Hathaway was terribly miscast as the grand high witch she’s still pretty young
The remake feels soulless, the effects are all CGI and look like every other CGI effect ever, they cheapened the High Grand Witch presence, its somewhat closer to the original book but then it also takes some wild liberties. I don't know what possessed Zemeckis to do that remake (and the Pinocchio one too) I guess they offered lots of money.

Also when she’s sitting alone in her hotel room, you can hear her mutter, “Never wanted to be one of them, anyway…”

The Grand High Witch’s cat is named Liebchen which means little love or sweetheart in German so she does have a soft side.
Fact: I saw the movie in theaters at a very young age and cried 5 times in the movie

Thinking the remake will be 'leagues better' .... OOF. But I support you guys watching it and comparing.
Yeah, Aran definitely has no faith in the sequel. 😂
