It wouldn’t make sense to double track the segment from Ronkonkoma to Greenport. There’s less than 10 trains a day and the ridership isn’t high enough. Most people go to Ronkonkoma to commute to Manhattan because there’s more service and they pay less. Yaphank is a zone 12 station and Ronkonkoma is zone 10. I’m lucky that a zone 4 station is my home station so I will always pay significantly less than people who commute from Suffolk County to Manhattan.
Seriously? Move this station to a place where people will find it and more will use it? The Medford Station is one stop west and it on Route 112 and there is no huge ridership there! Riverhead is in the heart of the village and the same thing. No one uses these stations as there aren't enough trains to promote the use of the line. I would use the Medford station if there was more then one AM and PM rush hour train. And that's why people, including me, drive to Ronkonkoma. And the state wants to spend $20million to relocate the Yaphank station?!? If you had more trains running on the line, I guarantee people would know where the current Yaphank station is! Add trains between Ronkonkoma to Greenport (and variations in between), especially during rush hour before spending huge dollars to move a station!
Well from what I read online the plan is to Electrify and add signals to as far as the new East Yaphank station (New one would be more east than the current one). So think if they do that then the ridership can boost at both stops. The main problem with the line past Ronkonkoma is it has no signals and its one track meaning they can run long trains or multiple close to each other and not coming from a different direction. It why there are so little trains and they're so short they really can't run it much. East Yaphank would be the first step into trying to fix this line as right now as part of it they can get funding to electrify the track meaning they can run more trains on a constant frequency in the peak direction.
They need to promote the north fork railroad service! There’s so much to do up there and so many busy residents ... but everyone is forced to drive to ronkonkoma........... SAD.
@@robertlucas8104 Well, do you know what hasn't changed? The River Road Bridge is still a crummy one-lane tunnel, and there's no grade elimination for Middle Island-Moriches Road, and both of those issues need to be solved too. I don't know which side of William Floyd Parkway the New Yaphank station is supposed to be on, but those problems should also be fixed.
DTD110865 you have a good set of points there. I just hope this study comes back with sensible points that cover your concerns. Now that I think of it, a lot of infrastructure was built over old ones. This green port line is ancient compared to many other branch lines, and many branch lines still have crappy low bridges that truck drivers seem to love getting caught under.
Build a double track for that line and the Montauk line. Add stations in calverton and manorville
That's What I've Been Saying For A Long Time Especially From Montauk To Patchogue

Needs more trains....they should electrify to here.
Yaphank will only prosper because of this.

They also need to build it in a way that's more convenient to travel to.
DTD110865 agreed. A lot can happen in 5 years

@@robertlucas8104 The "Greenport Branch" IS the original Long Island Railroad that was founded back in the 1800's.
I got doors closed on me at Yaphank cuz the staff thought nobody is getting off here lol
