I had the privilege of training with Heshiki Sensei and with two of his senior students, Mr. Fugazy and Mr. Medious (I apologize for any misspellings), for three and a half years in the mid-70s. Zen was at the heart of the dojo and classes were a means of learning to move intentionally without any intention, at the best moments. Thank you Heshiki Sensei and the senior students who taught us. I have carried the lessons of those years deep in my heart and soul.

Sensei Zenko Hishiki, the greatest Zen Martial Arts teacher I have ever met. One thousand blessings, one thousand silent bows.

Ansei Ueshiro was his first teacher, and they also had a dojo together. Heshiki Sensei's story starts from the time he went to Okinawa and met Nagamine Shoshin Sensei. We need to remember those who gave us our first steps, and that was Ueshiro Ansei Sensei student of Nagamine Shoshin Sensei. As far as everything else, I read your comments and I agree with them 100 %. Heshiki Sensei was charismatic, and really funny. He trained us hard, and then he fed us... He also liked to sing Spanish songs and played his guitar... I was there until he left for Hawaii.

    I remember Mr. Heshiki
very well from our days in NYC. He was a true and dedicated Karate and Zen man. I have good memories of sitting with him and Roshi Sakiyama speaking of Karate and Zen over very good Okinawan food. Roshi Sakiyama had studied twelve years with Master Chojun Miyagi Sensei as a long time Goju Ryu teacher I was fascinated speaking with him and Mr. Heshiki who is a Shorin Matsubiashi man. Glad to hear Mr. Heshiki is still doing what he loves. ✊️👊

I was very honored to train with Hishiki sensei on my visit to NYC & his visits to Ohio in the early 1970s.

I bow deeply. My dad was in Okinawa during World War Two and he knew pexactly what he was doing when he signed me up at age 9 into the Satsuma Bushi Karate dojo under Sensei Zenko Heshiki on west 72 street in New York city back in 1966 . His classes were intense.
I shared the punching on the makiwara board with Sensei, his energy just flows through you to the point where you punch the board hard as possible full on without caving in.
We would sometimes run miles through Central Park in our gee and barefoot. Met many dedicated fellow students (Dicky Quintana Jose Martinez Mr Shepard Susan Artie Drago Peter and his brother Joe , so many others) so the inspiration was heavy. I recall the day master Omine and Nagamine came to the dojo. Anyone who attended this dojo carries the discipline in their spirit for life. I thank Sensei Heshiki wholeheartedly for such an amazing experience which really made a huge difference in my life.
    I bow deeply.
    Thank you Mr Heshiki

Muchas gracias por compartir. Me gustaría conocer mas sobre la vida de sensei. En unos videos de corta duración lo escucho hablar en español. Es muy interesante que haya vinculado sl karate con el zen. Les agradecería si me dan mas información. Saludos
