So I am a new diver going through my OW class atm. Most of the class bcd's have the pockets that when opened dump the weights out but only if you are horizontally orientated. The bcd I am using has the weights that go into a pouch that is then velcro'd in with a handle to grab them to release.
Watching this video there are alot of bcd's that use these proprietary pouches. Why would this be used? Is it to ensure that when deciding weight needs to be dumped that it is dumped regardless of body orientation? It seems like it would ruin your diving should you need to dump weight and now have lost the weight pouches until you replace them. Especially if you are on a trip. At least with the pocket style all you have to do is replace the lost weight which is done far easier.

Sorry about the delayed response, Much of what you describe is spot on. Losing a clip/snap/lock in weight pocket does mean if you failed to completely secure the attaching mechanism, it (including the weight itself) is gone as soon as the diver goes horizonal.
So no matter what design or direction a diver is in during the dive, there's a possibility of losing a pocket.
To say that the Scuba equipment manufactures could "all" agree on one design, would be hoping that Santa was real....
