The reason the lake is pink is that there can't be freshwater connecting it, so it always stays salty... we did a lab about a week ago about this thing in high school, the bacteria is also called Halobacterium, which can live in extreme environments like this one, and it appears pink when there are salt solution in it, the lower the solution is (saltier) the darker shade of pink it becomes.
Its a salt lake exactly like the source where you find Himalayan Rock Salt - These are mined in Western Australia. Nothing weird about it... When it drys out you end up with beautiful big chunks of Pink or Orange rock salt.
