I'm happy he kept that bit about the steamers and money in. That's something that people need to hear. It's a fun hobby, but you shouldn't go into it thinking you'll come out with tons of money
Yeah, very few people come out of it being able to make a full career out of it. Many can get it out as a side job, but many many more can't even get enough to make money back from the electricity spent streaming.
Yeaa but I think if your a kid like 14 or 15 you should just stream everytime you play. Cause I'm sure most 16 year olds are already playing 5 hours a day
the advice about buying in bulk if you're able to is SO REAL. same goes for buying higher quality things if you're able to - cheap socks will rip faster and you'll need new ones which is more money going out. it's better to just spend more (if you're able) on a name brand bc they'll last longer and save you more in the long run. people don't get how expensive being poor is, and it sucks.
@@Seikushim0 I have unironically been saying "dink" for headshots since long before I knew Flats existed. It's just such a singularly _satisfying_ hit confirm noise that it became iconic to me pretty much instantly.
Crazy how Flats adequately explained how being poor is a societal thing while playing overwacth. Lots of people can't even figure it out and they're paid to talk about it.
"Clock needs an update" What could they possibly be updating? Are they adding more seconds per minute or something? Nerfing the "time flies when you're having fun" condition?
thanks for talking about the part with streaming and money. my family tells me to get into streaming to make money bc video games are my biggest long ongoing hobby and others try to get in it for the money as well with just playing the games as a little bonus but i don't think it works like that at all. doing it for the money at least in the start is a quick way to get burnt out cause there's a lot you have to consider and sacrifice to get anywhere near to making a bunch of cash + what u said about people rarely getting big too.
5:20 There is also the fact that when your poor, you usually have to do more financing and loans to purchase items. So, you often end up paying more for the same thing as a wealthier person. Also credit cards are just create a whole mess too.
That talk about buying in bulk reminds me of Terry Pratchett's boots theory: «The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. ... A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.»
I saw the same thing with a friend who couldn't afford for a monthly bus pass, so he had to pay for single tickets each time, which would have ended up costing him 3-4 times as much. That really opened my eyes.
My partner and I have been referring to the whole "keep you poor" stuff as "cyclical poverty" because once you are in thay cycle, it's very hard to break out of. Also, we refer to a lot of the poor, more rundown cities and towns as "systemic poverty" because they have lots of the "convience" stores and dollar store/save a lot types. These stores mostly sell cheap knock offs that work pretty well for a short period of time. So you end up buying the same thing 2-3 times a month/year when if you went to the 'better' store and bought the higher quality version, it would last 5-10 years.
Come for the gameplay. Stay for the discussions of how it’s more expensive to be poor than it is to be rich, which ultimately makes poverty even more of a barrier.
“The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles. But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet. This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness” sir terry pratchet in men at arms: the play
A 100$ pair of shoes can last you ten years but a 20$ pair of shoes will barely last you six months, yet when you're in poverty where in the world are you going to get the extra 80$ when you can barely afford the 20$? This is why it's systemic. It's so easy to get more money and save money when you already have money but when you're in it deep you often have no choice but to constantly be buying those new 20$ shoes, which adds up fast. This is why we need pay caps, higher minimum wage, universal basic income. Wasteful industries strive off the exploitation of the poor but if everyone qualified for a minimum amount of money then everyone would be able to afford high quality goods and, through those becoming more produced, it would lower the average cost of goods and increase the average quality over all. The economy is put in a downward spiral when we gut or ignore necessary regulation.
@@breadbag_ You might just be joking but any detractors who legitimately get that out of speeches like this are both a symptom of a failing education system and a part of the problem of why both these systems are failing
Flats is so real, growing up poor is rough, and getting out of it is even harder. With hard work, dedications, and many many sacrifices, it is possible to get financially stable. Not rich or well off, but stable, and in a good spot. I wish everyone luck with their endeavors.
Little advice out there to anyone listening to Flats talk about money. Saving money when you're young is the best thing you can do for yourself. Save money until it hurts. Saving $100 per month from age 20-40 will be worth twice as much when your 40 compared to saving $200 per month from age 30-40 despite spending the same amount of money.
When Flats checked the time I Instinctively Checked the Time on my phone for some reason 😂😂 Was weird when both the time I'm watching this video and when he did this both ended in 12 😅
The money talk was really interesting. I noticed your bit about the car was what my thought process was. I could have gotten a cheaper car but I don’t want to have to worry about it breaking down.
For people worrying about money there's one major thing I really would recommend, and thats to avoid debt at all cost. Its a very easy way to fall down very steep holes. If your a college student go to a community college to get your general ed than transfer, and if you are struggling for money take a year off and work a job or two. If your looking for a car, buy a used one than save up a some money on the side and eventually sell the car and use the new bigger sum to buy a better car and repeat, (you'll be suprised how many people are selling cars that are pretty much new but they dont need anymore cause they want bigger and better, just need to do some digging). Hell I dont even use my credit card, just toss a few monthly subscriptions on there to keep the credit score up, and buy things only with the money I have. If your struggling with money it is absolutly necessary to live a minimalist lifestyle, and when you get money you have to continue it. As someone who grew up with some rich friends I can tell you that you dont gain wealth by spending it. The two types of people who have every new model of phone and nice sports cars in there drive way are the uber rich and people in tons of debt. Maybe its fine to use a flipphone, ya know? If you can, take the bus. Bulk buy beans and rice for a good source of protein, grab a bulk bag of mixed greens, and make a aioli (its cheap, its just oil amd garlic basically) and you have a good filling lunch or dinner for an entire week. Its repetitive but repetitive is cheap. This has been a bit of a ramble but having been very poor at one point I wanna help other people if I can, hope this helps.
I feel buying stuff like cereal and chips at places other than Costco these days is a giant ripoff. The normal sizes of each are smaller now and the "family/party" sizes all seem to be what the normal sizes were, unless in the case of chips they've reduced the amount of packaging in which case I guess I can support that, but I doubt that's what's happened. Meanwhile I can buy a club sized box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch for not much more than the "family size" box at the regular grocery store, and the bags of chips are what I've always figured is the actual "party size". I think there was a study conducted that found lots of folks who are living within a certain percentage of the poverty line could save a ton of money buying food at places like Costco or Sam's Club, the problem is they literally can't afford the annual membership hit they'd have to incur before it's made up by the savings. You're right about the general notion of "it's expensive to be poor", though. I'm fortunate to do well as a software engineer who works remotely, so I can do things like buy a super cheap cell phone plan from like Mint Mobile because I'm around WiFi for the vast majority of my days (and would also be the case if I were in an office), so switching the three lines on my grandfathered shared data plan from Verizon saved me around $75/month. I can afford a phone with tons of storage so I just download whatever music or podcasts or shows I may be into when I'm on WiFi so I don't have to stream them. Honestly I think a lot of folks could make due with a non-unlimited data plan and save a good chunk of money, but for some folks it may literally be their most affordable option for Internet access because it's also how they get phone service, so they may not even have home Internet because they can't afford to pay for both. Also, even if your computer thinks you're in Ohio that would still be Eastern time. You don't hit Central time until you're pretty far west into Indiana.
