Billy Grey really was great in this. Child actors can be the weak link in movies, but he's so good...so genuine.

Favorite movie. Writing, acting, casting ,directing, concept. All excellent. It was sad to see such a poor remake but no worries, you got it right the first time.

This film was the first scifi movie to give us a serious look at what our first contact with extraterrestrials might look like, with a true cinematic genius at the helm, the great Robert Wise. The perfect combination of actors, script, and production values, a true classic of film, and of the genre. The remake was a total mistake :(

You failed to include Bernard Herrmann's ground-breaking music score, which incorporated two Theremins in the orchestration.

Perhaps it would be more civil if use use the word Dislike or don't recommend. We depend on civil language to live in a democracy. Or to use an old expression "loose lips sink ships" . Words matter. Please don't do violence to our beloved English language.

It was really a kind of cluky story, filled with plot holes and traps. but, it got across to the audience of the day. I was only 5 years old when it first hit the silver screens, but in those days, theaters would replay movies for a few years, so when I first saw it I was 9 and it really grabbed me. That robot was awesome. I still keep two prints of the Gort head over my desk. Sky marshall Kla'atu (Michael Rene) was such a "Dad" image for the little kid (they all seemed to need a little kid in their sci-fi stories in those days) and I was in some "missing daddy" issues at the time) and I really latched onto the Michale Rene character as - "What if I had a dad who was really an alien from outer space and had this giant robot that would kick anyone's ass and a cool spaceship and my dad was nice like Kla'atu was?" So, it had a lot for everyone. But, even as a kid, I questioned: when Kla'atu escaped from the hospital and hid out in the R&B house and everyone was looking for the escaped Spaceman and no one knew where he was- You mean the Government had this guy from another planet in the hospital and no one bothered to get a photograph of him? That was dumb!" And when Gort went to get Kla'atu out of the jail where they had his corpse stretched out...not one person in the whole city noticed this giant silver scary looking robot walking through town, vaporizes the jail wall, then walking back to the spaceship with this body draped across his arms? Really?
Oh, well, we just have to figure the robot had some kind of kick-ass "No one look at me!" rays or something.
And what about Gort having these "automatic" triggers that at the first sign of violence, they go into "Burn it! Burn it all!" mode to take out the aggressors. When the Army machinegunned Kla'atu int he street, Gort was still in his 'pussy' mode of trying to get out of his epoxy sarcophagus and still didn't go all Chuck Norris on the world. What? Makes no sense. I guess that model of Gort was on a 'trial offer" or a loaner or something.
"At the first sign of aggression...." Whatever...
    Anyway...a good story otherwise.

Hugh Marlow was a great "friend" of Michael Renney. I sense the term meant they found a mutual sexual attraction. Nothing wrong with that but still sort of sad. We've moved beyond those repressed times.

I have watched this movie a dozen times or more and I never get tired of watching it. It is realistic I love that you didn't put a bunch of martians and green slimy suits using Patricia Neal and And Michael rennie as Klaatu Not Spencer Tracy. Though I think he's a marvelous actor ... l'm glad you went with an unknown Because Klaattu is Unknown! The story was much better than the Keanu Reeves Version ... I like Keanu Reese very much. I didn't like the story, I didn't like the way it was told, I didn't like anything about it!
