- James heads out to see one of our latest consignments, a 1960 Chevrolet Corvette C1. This particular car is a first-generation example of the convertible American sports car; finished in a desirable red-on-red colour scheme. Under the bonnet is a 4.6-litre (350ci) small-block V8, coupled to the four-speed manual gearbox.
If you were an astronaut or fighter pilot in the 60’s or 70’s it’s quite likely you drove a Chevrolet Corvette C1. There’s a wonderful story about Jim Rathmann, a Florida based Chevrolet dealer and winner of the 1960 Indy 500, who befriended astronauts Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, and Gordon Cooper. Rathmann convinced GM President Ed Cole to set up a program that supplied each astronaut with a pair of new cars each year. The astronauts received brand-new Corvettes, which they were given the option to purchase at a "used" price after they'd been driven 3000 miles. They would sometimes race them on Florida beach roads. It’s frankly harder to think of anything much cooler.

One of my very first model cars i ever had. In Tasco Turquoise.
What an absolute legend that car is!
Love the C1 quad headlamp... Stunning. Small correction. 4.6l = 283ci
The engine is a 283 not a 238, and the current Corvette is rear mounted mid engine not front mid-engine as said. And exhaust exiting through the bumper was not unusual at the time; the Corvette's main competitor the Littlebird had it as well, as did some larger cars.
I came here to say this LOL
The C8 Corvette is rear-mid engined, not front-mid.
personally i think that whole "mid-front" engine nonsense was brought about by corvette in thier attempt to make excuses for not making the vette what it was supposed to have been from the beginning..... in some small part itbwould seem they were as determined as Porsche with their opinions just Porsche made it work and chevy made excuses.... till the c8..... dangit now i have 3 porsches id trade for a c8 lmao
Beautiful car 🚗🚙🚘⭐️⭐️⭐️👍👍👍👍
Ah, yes… the True Lies corvette. I’ll always love this one.
what about animal house to icon
Why didn’t you tell us how it drives. Performance, ride, noise, brakes etc
Probably not super great as its so old you don't buy a c1 for performance
bad
Looking at this beauty only reminds me how the legacy was butchered with the new garbage C8. Focused on looking presumptuous and Ferrari-like.. while ironic enough the Ferrari 812 looks more like a modern Corvette with the long hood, beautiful curves and the back closer to a Corvette C3.
Check out Chip Foose's design of what the C8 Vette should have looked like. It is genius. (as we expect from Foose I guess)
yeah the C8 is boring
"The 238 cubic inch"... do you not edit your videos for accuracy? It's a 283ci.
driving with the top up come on man
Not oil temp, but oil press.
Not 238 cid but 283 cid. Not oil temp, but oil press. Do your homework.
oil presaure sir not temp
I guess Americans of those ages must have had very short arms and legs. That interior is not fit for a normal sized human.
"front mid-engine" is same as deciding one day yer a "trans" person.... its just a sick fantasy it doesnt actually exist..... if driver sits behind engine its front engine car..... seriously tho.... duh
