  • Ferrara ("Fràra" in Ferrara dialect) is an Italian town of about 132,000 inhabitants, the capital of the province of the same name in Emilia-Romagna.
It was the capital of the Duchy of Ferrara in the Este period, when it represented an important political, artistic and cultural center. The urban development that took place during the Renaissance transformed the city into an urban model that earned it the title of the first modern capital of Europe. In 1995 it was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for the historic center and in 1999 it obtained a second one for the Po delta and its Este delights.
The entry of Ferrara into the new century is symbolized by the replacement, on the column in Piazza Ariostea, of the statue of Pope Alexander VII with that of Napoleon Bonaparte. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Ferrara also experienced the climate that preceded the outbreak of the First World War. The interventionism of some exponents of the city bourgeoisie in 1914 also brought Cesare Battisti to the city, and later, with the outbreak of the war, several volunteers left even if Ferrara remained far from the front, a rear city, little directly involved in the war operations.
Piazza Trento e Trieste is the most important square in the city, surrounded by historic buildings such as the Cathedral, the Palazzo di San Crispino, the Nuovo theater and the Town Hall. The central sidewalk is called the plank and partly hosts the weekly city market and numerous cultural, tourist, economic and promotional events on various occasions.
The Estense Castle is considered the most representative monument of the city. It was conceived as a military fortress, built in brick, with a square plan and equipped with four defensive towers with roof terraces, surrounded by a moat with water which makes it one of the last European castles with this characteristic. As early as 1476 Ercole I d'Este decided to transform it to make it assume the function of a noble palace. The family thus abandoned the previous residence of the Town Hall and, starting from the sixteenth century, undertook the first interventions of embellishment of the castle, in particular with the arrangement of the via Coperta, an elevated corridor that connects the Estense Castle to the Town Hall, to the inside of which Alfonso I d'Este placed the so-called Camerini of alabaster, that is the sumptuous rooms containing important works that belonged to Dosso Dossi, Tiziano Vecellio and Antonio Lombardo.
The coat of arms of Ferrara is a Samnite shield divided horizontally in half, with the upper part in black and the lower part in silver. The shield is stamped with a ducal crown, a reminder of the city's ducal period. The banner of the banner shows identical colors, has golden metal parts and a vertical shaft covered with velvet with a spiral-wound gold border. The upper arrow recalls the coat of arms of the city.
