They listened to the monkees and such but I'm so glad for pop hit radio because it exposed me to soul which I love more then anything today. That and old country music believe it or not. Jeez! This is the first time I'm witnessing the real "Larks" trio! Never saw them before, not even on TV! I was seven years old at the time, and everyone was doing THE JERK! (Everyone, except cops in the neighborhood, I suppose; and even they most likely were doing when they went home to their wives and families. the dance was that huge)! besides dancing with my peers at the time, it was really a "hoot" watching my teenage aunts and uncles and their friends dancing this at house parties, or at the Palladium, the Apollo, and other dance halls and "discotheques" (Yes, the "Discos" reached America from France at that time, for all youse "clueless" Gen-Xers, and "Millennials")! What was noticeable at that time was that kids and adults who otherwise had "two-left-feet" were able to dance because of "The Jerk". Maybe that why it was so popular with "dorks"!!!
1964 pretty much ended the greatest period in popular music to me - late 1950s through '63-'64. For groups and singles such as the Larks and many others - just never as big and the same again. What a pity. Notice how clean cut the kids looked. A gentler time but a wonderful era - never to be repeated. I was 19 when this song was popular.
John hi I'm matt, there's a scene in pulp fiction where uma Thurman character asks john Travolta character "do you prefer the Beatles or elvis"? Beatle ppl can like elvis iui s and vice versa but at some point u gotta choose. I think that is the division between eras and styles of music 50s to 63/64 . Up til the time beatles n stone's became popular, music was dominated more by groups like this. Personally I preferred the 50s into early 60s. I like pop hits in very different genres. Good rythm good melody a decent singer there ya go. Once music started to get serious with protest music , Bob Dylan, all those in folk rock movement and bands like beatles got artsy and creative it was over. For the worse to me. Martha and vandellas who once did great songs like dancin in the streets even started to do socially conscious music which never came close to their unserious pop hits. It still bugs me that this music was regarded as unserious compared to the 60s protest music because of song content. I dont care what a songs about , I care how well its crafted and how good a melody it has. You want serious issues watch the news. I just want to testify ! To the truth... so ok I was born in 60 . Growing up I was in high school in mid to late 70s. Now I'm from central New Jersey, the suburbs yeah? So kids my age, my peers all listened to rock but a specific era and type of rock. Leonard skynyrd, the who, cheap trick, Tom petty, kiss... what's called classic rock today. Well I liked some of that stuff, it was ok, but I never went along with the crowd if I had other ways of feeling about things and I definitely did in music. I listened to oldies stations to hear chuck berry , Jerry lee Lewis, and then good old soul like this here. To this day given the choice of the temptations or pink floyd 100 times out of 10 I'm goin temptations.
-Those were the days. Heard these songs everywhere from the radio to juke boxes in h.s. school hang spots to tv dance shows to bus trips to Palisades Amusement Park to parties, etc. Music was fun back then.
i bought this back in late 64 released here in the UK on pye international a regular spin in the all-niter RnB clubs up west in soho ! after all this time i actually get to see the "larks" performing it ! thanks for posting this magic memory ! regards

After rock and roll dance the jerk hard and important Legacy in the late sixtees and seventees discos. Myself i started to move in discos with the jerk type of dance.
I remember watching American Dreams and I loved how the Current Pop Stars played "Past" Pop Stars. Usher playing Marvin Gaye, Hilary Duff playing Mary Ann Ganser of The Shangri-Las, Brandy playing Gladys Knight. Today it woud be kind of tricky. I would have loved for Jessica Leccia (Ex-Natalia Rivera) Guiding Light and Ana Maria Lombo & Rosanna Tavares of Eden's Crush play The Ronettes. Then Dick Clark did Satelitte Shows and did some in England. Cheryl Ann Tweedy could have played Sandie Shaw who did her version of Always Something There To Remind Me, Nicola Roberts could have played Cilla Black.
October-November 1964 was a time of relative bombast in music (the Exports' Car Hop, Lee Rogers' I Want You To Have Everything, the Dave Clark Five's Any Way You Want It, Travis Wammack's Scratchy, etc.). What made this Money label 45 stand out was its deceptive subtlety. It had a relatively flat mix, which meant that you really had to pay attention to get everything out of it. In other words, the Larks made you work for it, and that was a big part of what was so great about this single. Grateful that this live lip sync clip has survived.
The Larks vocal style in this performance was likely influenced by the Impressions high falsetto vocal stylings in three part harmony. The Impressions had begun to hit their stride with this harmonic style, after the departure of Jerry Butler, and the Brooks Brothers, when the group was reduced to a trio, with Curtis Mayfield as lead singer.
