I've spent 30 years repairing vehicles. I think it's time for a change. I want this guy's job destroying things; no customers to satisfy. It has to be a great stress reliever!
This is so cool. I have watched this video a few times already. I had a family come over my home to watch it with us. We all enjoyed it and decided to share it with another family who is willing to drive 3 hours to watch it with us. Guess you can't go wrong with this video. It's very nice to see that a great video can get do great reviews. I will be watching it again tonight with our neighbor.
As an unfortunate regular customer of New York city's MTA bus, I find this video very soothing for the soul, the dysfunction that is MTA is absurd. Notice how the operator kept picking on the drivers seat location.. I guess he's a customer too!!
What a horrid waste of a good bus!! The GMC RTS II Advanced Design bus was and still is the MOST durable coach GM ever built. As for scrap value, the body panels are worth about $200 each. The windows about $300 each The door engines even as rebuilable cores about $150. The HVAC package over $2000. The engine core about $2500. The transmission another $2500. Who ever sent this bus to be dismantled in this way was a FOOL!!
Before I retired I used to work for a transit district which had these babies. LOVED to work on them. GM had created one of the very best buses it ever built. 2-3 million miles of city operation was not unheard of.
+Wayne Alan I don't know much about these buses but having worked in a breakers yard for a long time, I can see there are a lot of useful parts which are just being wasted , sad times,
+Wayne Alan I used to work in the transit industry and agencies can get federal $$$ to buy new buses whether they need them or not. When it comes to free $$$ from the government, it's a case of "Use it or lose it". However, its' also a huge -and I mean HUGE- waste of both financial and material resources.
They'll have taken any bits deemed to be worth saving off it before it gets fed to this machine. Working parts are worth a lot more than shredded scrap. This is a cheap way of dealing with the residue thats left after they've removed the valuable bits.
That's an "RTS" transit bus which has a unitized body and frame. They are very strong and to qualify for federal transit administration funding, they must pass a 4000 Lb. side impact test.
***** Transit agencies can get funding (70% of the cost) from the federal government to buy new buses every 12 years. That encourages agencies to just scrap their existing buses instead of maintaining and rebuilding. It's a huge waste resources
+Lefty McStinky Actually they make EXCELLENT conversions to motor homes. I did one to the one I bought and it is the quietest motor home I've ever ridden in.
+Cacharroteca NOS I agree, that was a terrible on what they did to that bus. It looked like it could have been fix, there didn’t look like any thing was wrong with it, it even had a motor. They probable couldn’t start it up so they scrap it.
+Tim L No sir. The average life span of a bus typically is about 15-20 years. After that time, the frames and bodies develop stress cracks. My company uses x-ray on the frames. NJDOT comes in and determines whether or not the bus gets a new sticker. If it does not pass their tests? The bus get's put out of service. So you can't just look at the this video and say, nothing wrong with the bus.
Wow… I didn’t think they did that to determine that the bus would have to taking off the road if it didn`t pass. I wondered what then did with all the old buses because I never seen any,.. any wear. Now I know that they go to the scrap yard to get re-cycled. Thank you for telling me that.
+Tim L well on the flip side of this, the scrap yards will gladly sell the buses as long as they hold the title to a private individual. in some cases, they take them to club meets where other bus fans own their own buses. some buses even get turned into more motor homes.
Can't believe I sat through the entire 15 minute video. Mesmerizing. For some reason this reminded me strongly of the scene in Jurassic Park (the first one) where the T.Rex flips the SUV and then starts ripping it apart, ripping bits off it etc.
it's crazy, you know. You see these big buses on the road or Highway and think "that bus looks so heavy, it's huge" yet here's a crane tossing it around like a toy... damn.
+chris logan Yep. best and structurally the strongest bus ever manufactured. 30', 35', 40' and 45' (45' was a custom order only 12 of them ever made) 5 foot modular sections of stainless steel with a pair of stainless steel guide rails for assembly.
That is a waste of parts. Where I work we have a coach that is currently off the road due to it having a blown turbo, but we can't get any parts for it because nobody saves the parts because they just crush them for fun.
i was mislead by the title... i came here from a SSI video, expecting to see a bus go through a shredder.. skipped all through the video, no shredder, then i look at the caption to say it's "preparing a bus to get shredded"... let down
Drove for 21 years in Milwaukee and we had 150 backbone of the fleet. Didn't like them on heavy routes as doors didn't close quickly and slow to make transition. A lot of squeaky plastic and fiberglass and I recall they got less than 5mpg
Dam do those buses take a pounding! Did you guys see that bucket loader PLOW INTO THE SIDE OF THE BUS?! How come they remove the wheels on the cars but NOT the buses??
You know since the Scooby-Doo Gang's 50-year-old Mystery Machine van had been driven for years since 1969, it seems it's time for that crummy old vehicle to get DESTROYED!!!!!! (In Vyond)
Wooah! When you said shredded i didn't think you meant it literally. It's surprisingly rare to get footage of something getting completely ripped apart. Usually people film a minute of maybe a gas axe at work and then move on.......
They should have provided it to developing countries. Indian railways provided their Metre Gauge locomotives and coaches to some African countries and South Asian countries when they decided to expand the Broad Gauge rail network.
There really isn't much metal on this buses, we had several of them that we sent to the scrapper with no engine or transmission in it. and when all was said and done we got 200 a piece for them, the frame is stainless steel, aluminum and fiber glass shell. We ended up selling them to private parties for more money than the scrap yard gave us. The best way would have been to set it on fire and clean up the mess afterwards, the aluminum melts pretty good. Seen a few burn to the ground.
I once worked on a scrapyard and operated excavators and forklifts and I can tell you it can be fun tearing a bus apart in no-time! I didnt even have to care avoiding scratches!.....lol!!
slowpoke96z28 well, shredding a bus in under 20 mins. was the givven time on the scrapyard I worked on. When you have to prepare up to 20 busses a day for the shredder, you have to hurry up!

Sometimes these old machines need to be scrapped, I am a fleet technician, and lemme tell ya, some days I would love to do this to a vehicle, I am one of those people who see a vehicle for its potential, and enjoy rebuilding it into a usable machine, but sometimes its too far gone. Besides, it will be melted down and turned into something new, and hopefully improved. And no, destroying a vehicle is not illegal. What I thought was really dumb was when 'cash for clunkers' took descent vehicles - that most times were driven to the dealer, purposely ruined the engine, and crushed them, heck most of them that were crushed were way newer than what I had been driving. Had it been my decision, I would have offered those vehicles to the people driving a real old junker for a low price, and removed the really old (dangerous) junk from the road. But instead they destroyed them.
+Mike Ebz Except for the RTS II that was hit by a train, I have never seen one which was "too far gone". These coaches were all stainless steel modular (5' each) construction. They were designed to go over 2 million miles in the very worst kind of operation "Stop and Go". Garbage trucks are replaced after about 6 years. Buses have a half-life of 12 years. Back in 1972 I went to work for a transit district and we only retired buses when the Feds said we met the 14 year average age for the fleet. Our RTS's went nearly 18 years before we finally decided to retire them and then that was NOT because they were worn out, it was because the engines were 2 cycle design which could not be brought into spec for smog purposes. Re-power packages were possible however it was more economical ($'s wise) to replace them. The coaches were then sold at auction. I bought one and it is now a very nice motor home.

A BUS. A TRAIN. A PLANE. THEY ARE AL HOLLOW INSITE. IF YOU MADE THE SHREDDER BIG AS NEEDED. I MAILT ALREADY TO SOME FACTORIES
I'm gonna be sick! Such harshness to a beloved RTS
Smash that crap up - that was junk!
heelfan1234
It could well have been a flood victim or something nasty like that, no use keeping it around!
Aussie50 Good call, we must get rid of junk to make way for new vehicles.
***** The old ones are shit, they pollute and use more fuel. Break them all for scrap!

it's really hard to not see them as like dinosaurs or like great mechanical beasts
New York had a lot of these during the late '80s up to mid '90s.
getting paid for having fun. the best job ever
This video takes me back to some of the old sy/fy movies of the 50’s/60’s! That machine operator probably sleeps better at night that I do!
There is some kind of satisfaction to be had watching this..
INSIDE THAT BUS, WAS MY MOTHER I LAW... YEAH!
Awesome!, gotta keep on shredding :D. love the way it hits the ground and one of the tires lets go!
*****
lol Twilight
Omg bronies run there gonna grind us XD
* _sniff!_ * Ya can't help but get a little choked up, seeing the ol' gal go...
Damn! that man has a beautiful machine control... he makes the act of shredding look like a fine and delicate art :3
The actual shredding is done by another machine that uses a 6000 Hp. motor to grind up the remains.
Well I really don't know much about this kind of machines but I liked what I saw :P
That bus would have done for us, we could of lived on that! What a shame. Still dreaming of going back on the road in a double decker.

I played it backwards...looks like you made a bus to me from shreds
that was a nice 1996 TMC RTS nova bus :(
how did i get here? i need to be doing my homework, and i just watched a 15 minute video of a bus getting shredded!
+TF2Player By clicking on the video, otherwise you wouldn't of made a comment.

A lot of good parts wasted
Playing a claw machine in a nutshell
You have the BEST job!👍
The worst job you mean
I imagine being in the back of that bus while that goes down is what being in a T-Rex attack would be like.
move to the back of the bus! that was an RTS the toughest work horse out of any transportation system. It took a while for that machine to mangle it.

Then the excavader was like, fresh meat...!

For being a fiberglass body on this city bus,it tooked the machine sometime to find the weaker sides, why do they leave the rims and tires on it?
+Nut Zack The RTSII was an all stainless steel modular construction coach. The lower panels were fiberglass to save on weight.
