- When Roshida Dowe was 39, she lost her job working as a consumer automotive finance lawyer in the California Bay Area. Instead of scrambling to find another job, she decided to take a year off to travel the world. Six months in, she was the happiest she had ever been and decided she was done with the workforce, so she decided to retire instead. With $660,000 saved up in investments and equity, it was just what she needed to start her FIRE journey and the next chapter of her life in Mexico City. How I Retired Early At 39 In Mexico City With $660,000
I’ve never seen such happiness radiating from a person, her smile says this is legit.
I initially planned to retire at 62, working part-time while saving money. But steep price increases have disrupted my plan. I wonder if those who experienced the 2008 financial crisis had it easier than my current situation. The declining stock market has lowered my income, and I'm worried that my reduced contributions will leave me with insufficient retirement savings.
It's recommended to save at least 15% of your income in a 401k. You can use online calculators to estimate how much you should save based on your age and income. Saving at least 15% of your income in a 401(k) can help ensure that you have enough money to retire comfortably. By saving this much, you can take advantage of compound interest and potentially grow your retirement savings over time.
I wholeheartedly concur; I'm 60 years old, just retired, and have about $1,250,000 in non-retirement assets. Compared to the whole value of my portfolio during the last three years, I have no debt and a very little amount of money in retirement accounts. To be completely honest, the information provided by invt-advisors can only be ignored but not neglected. Simply undertake research to choose a trustworthy one.

I think the retirement crisis will get even worse. A lot of people can’t save because of low paying jobs, inflation, and insane rental rates. And now that home ownership is out of reach for middle class Americans, they won’t have a house to retire with either.
Rising prices have affected my intention of retiring at 62, working part-time, and building my savings. Nobody can become financially successful over night. They put in background work but we tend to see the finished part. Fear is a dangerous component, hindering us from taking bold steps we need in other to reach our goals.
I think it's not always about fear, Sometimes realistic factors discourage people from reaching their goals in life. For instance, I've tried investing in the stock market several times but always got discouraged by fluctuations of stock value.

Why does the US media portrait Mexico City as an undesirable place? It is one of the best cities in the world. Extremely rich in culture, history, cuisine, economy, etc. Anyone that actually comes, ends up loving it. There are trees everywhere, there are so many beautiful areas to WALK for hours, and the people are so nice. Before any American let itself fool by the media, please give the city a chance. You won't regret, I promise.

She had a job paying $200K, no one she needs to support financially, created a system for saving and investing, and continues to do consulting work so she doesn't have to touch her investments. This model will not fit a majority of people. Do what what works best for you.
Yes, her journey is very inspiring but also very specific to her lifestyle and circumstances. A lot of people will click on this video assuming she's fully stopped working but that's not true, she just has much much more control over how/why she works. Making $200K is also not realistic for most people.

She managed to create her ideal lifestyle. And Mexico isn't going to wipe out her savings when she needs medical. Visit a Mexican doctor for $45 versus $400 in USA.
@@RaKenobi 400? I went to the emergency room for asthma, they basically ignored me. After some pills and putting me on a machine that cost 40.00 for the asthma treatment I was giving a bill. of over 3000.00. Thankfully, I have insurance and my co pay was 350.00

People in other parts of the world work many hours as well, in fact in Mexico by law you work 46 or 48 hours per week compared to 40 in the US and of course some times that is not enough people need to other sources of income.

This is a misconception…my family all lives in Peru and I have some friends there, including my dad. They all work 50 minimum up to 60+ hours a week for really low salaries compared to here where I’ll work 50 hrs tops. My friend in Peru starts his day at 8Am and won’t leave office til 7-9 pm that’s around 12 hrs a typical day and no hourly pay. We should be grateful to be in the states.
@bigfishh Its official data. You can look it up from the world bank. Germans work the least amount in Europe by hours. Productivity during those hours is high (higher than in the US for example). But the stereotype about Germans being hard workers is just wrong

I retired at age 35 and also live in Mexico City...almost every day an American comes living in Mexico...what does that say about your country? USA is by far perfect, and if you are a person of color, you are better treated anywhere else on this planet. Straight facts. I lived in Asia, North America, Europe and now South America...people here are kind, open, and there is less stress if your income comes from abroad. You will be able to live a very good quality life. But Roshida said, Mexico City ain't cheap ! so don't come with a mentality that Mexico needs to obey to your life and rules...there are enough arrogant foreigners living here...learn Spanish first of all, integrate, mingle with locals ! Mexicans, not just expats ! Explore different neighborhoods/villages/cities outside the expat areas of Condesa, Polanco, Reforma and Roma...those areas are not a reflection of what Mexico stands for.

Mexico City IS cheap beyond rent in a good neighborhood. The metro is literally 25c USD and you can eat most meals for $5 USD or less. Cinema tickets cost like 1/3rd of the US. What are you on about??

@@stepheng9322 also gas prices are now back to what they were pre pandemic levels. Jan 2020 and Feb 2020 I was paying 2.60 paid that the last month I filled up my tank. But I do plan on getting an electric car myself, most likely a Tesla. Gas cars will soon be outdated

In 2020 I decided to pay for a mentorship in a type of real estate investing I was interested in. I haven't retired but I was offered an asset management position with another investor because I understood what he was doing. I now work from home, he pays me a salary. I have my own hours, have 3 boys at home, and was able to leave dental hygiene behind. I am so thankful for doors God opened. Plus, I am making more now than when I was having to work hourly and work less hours. Thank you Jesus!! I live in Texas, but I sure would love to get by on less than 3K like she does!! Mexico City is an awesome place!!

Is it safe for foreign people to move there? Any tips on how we can prepare for moving to Mexico? I've been thinking about it but I'm somewhat scared because we've known of a couple people who have been murdered while in Mexico.
@@sophien5416 It depends where are you going to move. Sure, there are really dangerous places in Mexico but there are really safe places too. That's the first thing I would consider if I decided to move as a foreigner. Usually in little towns where everyone knows everyone else is more or less safe because of that. Nonetheless, recently we have seen an improvement in how the government is dealing with violence and I'm hopefully that in the near future we could have better circumstances. Maybe buying some land now will be a good option since it's cheap now but if things get better you would pay more for the same land. If that doesn't work well you can always get your money back. Have friends in Mexico usually we completely love foreigners and we are always hoping to give help to a friend in need.

“Retired” doesn’t mean she doesn’t have an income stream. She started out with $660k, but it grew to above $1 million. That is way enough to retire in Mexico.
Shida, I totally get it and I'm so proud of you for having the courage to be your own! In 1989, 6 colleagues and I quit/retired from government employment because we were riffed and rescinded at lower salaries only to train other people to become our leads. As a result, I became a technical consultant and continuously live 100% debt-free. My wife and I have been RV traveling and living our lives without obligation to anyone and it feels so good. Although, still residing in the US, traveling abroad has crossed our minds countless of times. Keep encouraging others to free themselves!
Growing up I had a trust fund that my parents never let me touch so I went to school,worked and just lived a normal life until I turned 21. I inherited my grandmas home In Polanco in Mexico City and since I had all that money saved & placed into investments I decided to renovate the house and now live there maybe 8-9 months of the year. The city is amazing and the people are beyond warm and when you’re smart with your money you can live a pretty comfortable life

Early retirement and working recreationally only when you want to, is the way to go. FIRE has not only been the gamer changer for me (only learned about it around 2021), but a life saver.
I think she made a right decision. Mexico City is the most established and modern city in the Mexico. You are not far from your home, but you are also enjoy safety of the mexico and access to many key amenities. At least the best docs in Mexico are in Mexico City.
Mm there a plenty of beautiful places to go for example: Cancun, Boca del Río, Puerto Vallarta etc

Doing the math, the annual interest on her mutual fund is $80,000 (8% of $1M), plus she makes another 36K - 60K per annum from her consulting projects, making her annual income ~ $116 - $140K.
When her monthly expenses are deducted (~$2,300 per month x 12) she's in the green between 88k & 112K per annum while living the life she's dreamed of.
She’s mentioned on her UA-cam channel that she lives off of 4% per year to allow her investments to still grow. but yes, she’s doing amazingly well!
How do you know she has $1M in mutual funds? Sounded like that was her total portfolio, not necessarily only funds.

This is truly amazing. She lives off of $3000 - $5000 a month and is content. Like Roshida mentioned, America really doesn't tell you when enough is enough. So you keep on working and working towards this ever evolving number that never suffices. She's traveled the world and is open to life. The key factor for me from Roshida's life is that she's content. She is living a stress free life and chooses what she wants to do each day. That, to me, is success. I literally just want to be happy (and live a life that is sustainable).
and honestly 3 to 5K a month should be good for most people. 2.5 k covers her expenses and how much other stuff do you need? - the remaining 2 - 3 k should buy you whatever you want without having to think about it.
She said she lives off $2300/month in Mexico City. Did I miss something? Where did $3000-5000 a month com from? As that her US monthly cost?

Good move so young. I retired at 56 with a decent $300,000 here in the U.S comfortably, so far. No bills but a house note. I planned eliminating all bills 2 years b4 retirement. Planning to move abroad, but not permanently, possibly investment property, when I'm not there. Yeah America is a big GRIND, day after day. If you don't let it go, you never will.
My wife and I started traveling about a year ago and love the autonomy we have. We currently live in Guadalajara Mexico and love it here. Mexico city is my wife's favorite city so far. Our journey has been therapeutic in so many ways. We will continue to travel and grow. I love what you are doing. Keep opening minds to take charge of their lives.

@@anastasiathehiphopfairy From my unknowledgeable opinion it is because the people immigrating to the U.S. for example are in a majority not rich, while many of the foreigners coming to Mexico are rich coming here to retire , like for example San Miguel de Allende, Yucatán, and Mexico City. Many foreigners go there buy property, buy houses making EVERYTHING EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE FOR THE NATIVES. Another example could be Hawaii, native Hawaiians cannot live in their ancestral land because it has been bombarded with rich people who have property there making it impossible for them to buy a house or afford rent.

Many jobs requiring us to know "Foreign languages" outside of English in our own country. So it's been hurting Americans for years. Many natives struggle here to get decent jobs to take care of themselves and has created a huge homeless epidemic. Rich immigrants push out poor Americans in our own cities all the time. So the Americans have a right for better life overseas just like the immigrants that come to America and take our jobs.

There are lots of white people who start out poor...I was orphaned at 16 had to quit school to work to.eat. I lived in a one room apt for five years scraping together the money to go to community college at 21. I lived on hotdogs eggs and beans those years...the hotdogs were a luxury. I got an on campus office job and extra work off campus putting myself through there then 4.yr college then grad school. Never attended a party, never went out dancing, nose to the grindstone honors student got my PhD zero debt and I was never poor again. But I continued to live under my means, invested so I could retire early at 50 first to a sailboat, then to.land in Latin America...I have had an adventurous life. When people look at me they think priveleged white gringa...nope...at least re the privelege...started working early, started saving early, started investing early, loved my work and love my retirement. The US is boring to me now...I have had adventure, world travel, and loads of fun..once I knew I had taken care of myself fimancially. Being a clinical psychologist and professor I have helped many people so that satisfaction is to me very important ...one can do good and do well for themselves and be successful at the same time. And it doesnt make me evil to be a white gringa nor does it make you evil to be male. Stereotypes

Playing these stupid games with employers after high school. Being stuck as a babysitter of others kids. Living in a dysfunctional house. Being underweight my whole life so far. Struggling to get a decent job and having to raise myself. No parents for support. Never able to make enough money to move our to even afford my own place. Getting constantly viewed as easily disposal and called lazy. Yet I actually want to work. I want my own place, own car and extra money in my pocket. I will also be going on my own adventures and creating many products. I am a young published author on Amazon. I own stocks and crypto investments. I've had to learn to become more selfish. Because ain't nobody else gonna take care of me, and even if I did find somebody I'm not gonna be able to "be myself" and reach my full potential living in that environment. My needs must be number 1 on list. Especially since their is no community in CA for me. So I'm fighting to escape CA and move to Texas. Before the trap of poverty gets me and robs me of my future. If I don't escape CA within these next 2 years then I'm probably finished. Navy entry process almost complete. If I can get in there in time then I can avoid all this crap and have a chance of a future. Better then dieing in poverty being called a bum from 18 onwards.

She entered enlisted straight out of high school.At that point she didnt want to go to college thoughbher father had left her the money whenhe died. She was tiny 5'3" and underweight,due to dieting. She almost didnt finish boot camp because she developed shin splints running, but she made it. They put her on a buoy tender first scraping nasty barnacles off bouys...filthy nasty job. She never uttered a sound of complaint..remember that later! It was a test.of what she was made of. The military does that to you. Soak it up and ask for more. Prove you are up to whatever job, go the extra mile and they will love you! It is what they look for in people high motivation.. There is only one way, it is up. It teaches you you are tougher than you think.
After that initiation job my daughter became a radio operator taking distress calls at Morehead City NC, then she was sent to navigator school put on a white boat,.a Coast Guard cutter. She rose the enlisted ranks and petty.officer ranks quickly. She then was selected for officers candidate school was second in that class in small arms fire and was selected for the leadership prize.of.her class #1.She went to an air staton as an assistant manager.Then she applied for and was accepted to flight school at the Naval Air Station Pensacola fixed wing aircraft imstruction, then helicopter pilot training. She was posted as a Dolphin pilot to SanFrancisco (Mountain View), Miami, L. A. She selected future.pilots in DC at headquarters, She was selected for the one seat the Coast Guard gets for a free Masters degree at the Harvard University Kennedy School.of Government she gotmher masters degree in international relations(proud academic mother here)...she had completed.her bachelors degree.over several.years while serving fulltime..After that she was assigned to operations chief mid range deployments of assets for the Atlantic...the entire Atlantic Ocean...she was there for a double tour. She was then selected for "Charm School" a military honor and her final assignment was as military attache to.our ambassador on Barbados, tough eh? Her dream was to.be a pilot.from age seven. She also wanted to be a writer.She had gotten a masters in writing too. She now regularly.writes.for an aviation publication retired in Florida, the mother of three, one active duty CG son, and two younger ones. Her husband is vp of finance at a company...needless to.say they are set financially..she has great retirement pay 80% of.her last salary for life after.30 yrs.service she was 48 when she retired! YOU WOULD BE 53.
Be prepared to work hard, never complain but look at the rewards!

If everyone understands financial literacy, retiring young is possible without the big salary. I understood the value of the dollar, and saved lots of money since the age of 16. I retired at the age of 35 years old (currently semi retired). By no means, I do not have half a million dollars in my savings or travel the world like this lady in the video. But I do own and paid off my home and live well. Recently, I picked up a job as I was getting bored at home and I wanted to buy some new toys. The best part of my new job is working part time on my schedule. The possibility is there. You just have to strategize and execute
I have never had the highest paying jobs, I think companies want your soul in exchange for these jobs. Regardless, I became financially literate, learned how to add and subtract, and created a life that is comfortable and without stress. I work but when I want to and for the terms I determine. It is not impossible to break out of the rat race.

I've never flipped a house, but I've been a landlord for about 5 years. Managing a house and tenants is a nightmare. Mutual funds are just way easier!!!

@@kevina3813 But less stress and more time to yourself. My property management seems fine. They take 8% of the monthly rental value of the property. I know that's 8 percent but i'll just sacrifice that instead of dealing with tenants at night if they have problems with something.

@@BobBapo I said my property management take 8%. I know everyone is different. Just have to find the right property management. I know all the expenses as well are to me and I'm just saying I will have more time on not dealing with tenants and use that time wisely to get more passive income.

I really enjoyed this story of feeling and understanding how people are overworked in America. It's crazy how other countries are structured compared to us. I am actually planning on doing this as well. I have family in a small pueblo in Mexico and plan on making a small house there to retire early. Making a house is extremely cheap and I won't need to pay rent, but keep in mind that it is in a pueblito some might not be used to this lifestyle. My goal is to save just enough and like her story as well work there but in something I love and days that I want too. I can also obtain a dual citizenship in Mexico because of my parents which would make things much easier.

Retired with a 7 figure portfolio and Receiving about $53k in dividends. I have been in the Stock market about 20 years. Am I worried? Am I selling? Absolutely not. I have purchased growth stocks too a little at a time over the past few weeks. I am going to sit back and observe how this all plays out, adding more at a time. my investment strategy actually calms me down. Eye on the prize, stay the course!
Dividend investing is great, just be patient. I went from making enough passively to pay for my netflix and hulu to now making enough to cover half of my mortgage. Not commenting this to brag, just to give hope to anyone who is discouraged by tiny gains in the beginning.

I am watching you from Queretaro, Mexico, where I have relocated, It is a beautiful, safe, and clean city in the middle of Mexico, and 3 hours from Chicago. I have a beautifully furnished apartment overlooking the entire city from my balcony and living room. My apartment includes all paid utilities and maid service. I have a driver also to shop for me. Not bad for a 79 years young retiree. USA became too expensive and deadly for me, so I called 1-800 Got Junk and had my entire two bedrooms emptied, and I did not have junk. They charge $800 per truck with 2 men, and I needed 4 and one half trucks with 10 men, and it took 6 and one half hours. I had lived there almost 24 years, and all they did was go up on everything, and only took care of the outside, except geese and dog droppings.YUCK!

I retired when I was 43. It is beautiful. We have no debt except utilities, car insurance, tags, property taxes. We bought a 990 sq ft house for $60k. Paid it off. We purchase our vehicles used. We still travel and treat ourselves. It would be nice to have friends to go to brunch with.
