    • @alexarcano
      @alexarcano 4 роки тому +4

      I'm 43 and I have ridden bikes since I was 19, it might be a slightly more difficult route for you if you've got your car license first, you'll fall into car driving habits if you lose concentration. Which is bad. You need a heck of a lot more concentration while riding, I've driven a car hundreds of miles in a day and been fine but a couple of hundred miles on a bike and you can be exhausted, physically and mentally. I'm not trying to put you off, i love riding, and I don't see myself stopping any time soon and the CBT isn't exactly hard so long as you can ride a bicycle, you can ride a 125cc bike.
      A word of caution though, yes you WILL fall off at some point and yes it WILL hurt. Again, it's not MIGHT fall off, it's WILL fall off. I've not met any biker who's never binned their bike. Now, if you still want to go for it, it's an amazing experience and it's well worth doing, just be aware it doesn't come without a price in bruises and lost skin.

    Awww this was a trip down memory lane. I remember my CBT. I had never ridden a motorcycle a day in my life before my CBT. I had been driving 5 years though. Even so, I remember how much I shit myself. After a few hours of basic maneuvers in a playground (on a suzuki gn125) they put us on the road. I remember how vulnerable and how small I felt on the bike, and how crap the school helmets were. It rained and I couldn't see shit. Rode in the rain with the visor up. Even fell off the bike while doing a u-turn (the instructor was laughing her ass off over the radio). Once I got my CBT certificate I bought a decent helmet and a little while later a YZF R125 to practice on. This was 10 years ago.
    For those who're doing their CBT, don't worry about being nervous I know I was. Don't worry about messing up. Just enjoy it, and learn all that you can. You'll hopefully come back with a certificate and a story to tell. One last thing. At the time they did mention that the only time they didn't pass a student was because they didn't know the Highway code and were at risk to themselves on the road. So make sure you know the highway code!

    I'm in the USA, so in order to ride a 125cc scooter, I have to take a knowledge test about motorcycles and pass it to obtain a motorcycle permit then take a riders course and pass it, then I'll be awarded my motorcycle license. Anything over 50cc is classified as a motorcycle in my state, so it's a requirement to do those steps. We call it Basic Rider Course(BRC) here. I'm interested in getting a scooter so I'm watching this video, I am learning alot even though the video is based in the UK.

    I give my CBT and I was scared. But I aced it on the car park and on my drive the first road was 30 and I didn’t know first person pulled out and I was waiting at traffic and then when clear I flow out and race to caugh up and I was doing 50mph and then the guy doing the test shouted speed speed speed it’s 30 30 30. Slow down I look down I saw my speed and I was doing 56mph and I started to break for the speed camera. I all so kept leaving my singles on all the time after turn and I still passed. So it’s right hard to fail. I would off personally failed some one doing that but I passed lol so I’m not in the road and fully insured for once!

    Totally new to all of this and I've never even considered it but with starting university soon I'm thinking it would be a handy way to get there and back without having to rely on the dreaded buses. I'm 27 and already have a full UK car licence so have previously been on roads and stuff. I'm nervous about dealing with traffic and possibly falling off. I'm quite a nervous person (especially with new things) but I like to be careful and cautious. Does anyone know if riding would be for me? Also can anyone recommend any good UK-based sites that will help me read up on things like road etiquette for bikes/scooters and things to be aware of?

    • @TheDonInLondon
      @TheDonInLondon  5 років тому

      No one will really be able to tell you if riding is for you. Doing the CBT will be a good start to see if you enjoy it or not. I would say at 17yrs get a 125cc and do test for A1 so you don't have to repeat CBT. Wait until your 24yrs and do Direct Access A License. But 7yrs is a long time to wait, I'd probably do my A2 at 19yrs with restricted power 46.6 bhp for 5yrs and then do my A License. I think that is probably the best route, you'd have a powerful bike, but lacking at top end, with loads of bottom end. It's not really about how fast you can go, but more about how fast you can get there.
    But I totally agree with what you say.

    • @TheDonInLondon
      @TheDonInLondon  5 років тому

      It is crazy to think of how long it can take to get your full licence but is worth it

    • @paulholding2011
      @paulholding2011 5 років тому +1

      @@TheDonInLondon If you want it that much you will do it. I'd always wanted a full bike license for years. I hated the fact of only riding a poxy 125cc with L plates at my age. I done my direct access A License at 51yrs old, best thing I'd ever done. My only regret is that I'd wish I'd done it a lot earlier in life, but I got it in the end. I'll be 60yrs old in a few weeks, but I still have that buzz for a bit of speed and excitement. Just want to say your never too old while you have breath in your body. Take it from an old geezer, make your dreams come true.

    Hey man, I'm due to do my CBT in the next two weeks. I'm buying my bike this Sunday and preparing. I had a 140cc pit bike however there are so many factors that are different. For example a it's a different style bike, it's small, it's not fast nor powerful really BUT what it has helped me with is my understanding of riding a bike with an engine and my basic knowledge of maintenance so that's handy however I am VERY nervous about the road laws etc and actually being on the road.its easy to drive a bike in a private field it's the road that's worrying me. Nice video.

    I’m 15 but have a moped ( obviously can’t ride it atm) but doing my cbt in September... aslong as the worlds a bit more normal, I was wondering so when you ride with the instructors on actual roads what should you do if they turn left but you there isn’t time for you to turn and then a car gets inbetween you and the instructor, should you still follow and wait till you can be back behind them?

    • @TheDonInLondon
      @TheDonInLondon  4 роки тому +2

      You will ride in front of the instructor and he will make sure he is with you at all times. If a car gets in the way, he will find the right solution. He may tell you to pull over and wait or continue. Good luck keep me posted how you get on!!

    Totes agree, I had my manual driving license and was cycling in London for 4+ years before I did my CBT without the experience I think it would've taken a lot more fails before getting my license. Shoulder checks was already second nature to me from cycling. My mate took his CBT 3 weeks ago he only has his auto driving license and was baffled by the manual controls, he ended up not getting the certificate.

    • @TheDonInLondon
      @TheDonInLondon  6 років тому

      Yes you are right! Wow shame he didn't get it but experience always helps to get your full licence. Can be hard to get use to it all but studying the highway code will help. Mind you I did an automatic cbt and bought a brand new manual the same day with no training haha

      @bikersquest 6 років тому +1

      How did you manage to ride your geared bike back without riding one before, did you get a mate to ride it from the shop? I was dreading riding home from the dealers and I managed to get my CBT on a geared bike lol

    • @TheDonInLondon
      @TheDonInLondon  6 років тому +1

      Bikers Quest well I asked the dealer how the gears worked with the clutch and I jumped on it alone and went home haha. Yes it was scary but I taught myself how to use the gears .... not what i would advise for others though haha

    • @TheDonInLondon
      @TheDonInLondon  5 років тому +5

      It is a good idea to get gear before if you are planning on getting a bike anyway however, they should provide you with the gear, helmet, jacket and gloves. They will advise you what shoes and trousers to wear if you do not have any gear.

    • @alexarcano
      @alexarcano 4 роки тому +1

      Agreed, they will usually supply a helmet, gloves and jacket it needed, however I'd advise you to get at least your own helmet and gloves and if you can stretch to getting a jacket, that too. Also waterproof trousers. You're going to need all these anyway so include them in your budget. Helmets are extremely difficult for me to get comfortable and well fitting, mostly because I wear glasses. Always buy a NEW helmet from an actual physical shop where you can try them on to get a good fit. Gloves, jacket and trousers can always be bought second hand if you're tight for money but NEVER, EVER, get a second hand helmet, a drop from hip height onto concrete can ruin a helmet while looking just like a little scratch, they also have a 'shelf life' after which the polystyrene can collapse and not provide sufficient padding (which is why you're supposed to replace them every few years) and the only way to know for sure if it's ok is to x-ray it. So really it's impossible to know a good one from bad.

      Will say been a city boy most of my adult life, never even driven (just commuted) so going to be a bit nervous which is a bit sad considering my age lol, apart from a few wangs about on totally illegal dirt bikes in my teens and obviously the push bike, that’s it. Always wanted a “proper” bike, but time work ect has always got in the way, don’t want to just fly into a direct access, want to do it right, follow a sensible path, it’s taken me 30 years to get round to this, so I can hold back another year on a 125 with L plates I recon. Tho ask me in a few months, I’ll probably be asking you for advice in which ridiculous over powered bullet I should buy lol

    once you have an automatic scooter around 100-125cc its a very big convenience. and if its a short ride why take a 4wheels right? unless its raining. i still don't know why 50ccs are still a a big thing in Europe and USA.. maybe you don't need a license for 50ccs below on EU and USA. but a little bit of power is way more convenient than 50cc and having a License. and some take it for a long ride like cross country and the technology on new scooter are way much more reliable now. some have ABS, USB for charging, Large Compartment even without having a top box, some have GPS and Bluetooth for mobile connectivity. and if you're feeling your scooter is having short on these things there are tons of aftermarket accessories for every possible Wants you're craving for. just go for Japanese brand because that what were having here in SEA Asia and we have almost all of those upgrades part (everything you imagine)

    • @TheDonInLondon
      @TheDonInLondon  3 роки тому

      Very true but really once you experience being on two wheels you will want more power for these type of trips where loading your bike is not an issue. Agreed 50cc is just not safe due to the lack of power but equally a 125cc is not great on power. 👍👍
