- It’s hard to put into words what it means to meet your heroes. To then be able hit record 5 minutes later and get to share that conversation with you is one of the prouder moments of my career.
With stories about how he started out, practicing in a shed in Steve Smith’s backyard, to walking into Electric Ladyland in New York City for a record date where the horn section was Michael and Randy Brecker and Barry Rogers, we cover a lot of ground in this conversation. John Tesh, Tracy Chapman, Chick Corea, Lee Ritenour, Vince Neal, Billy Cobham, Mike Stern, Vinnie Colaiuta, Frank Gambale, and about a thousand other legendary recording artists grace the pages of Tim’s career highlights.
I hope this is the first of many times I get to pick Tim’s brain and share it with you. The man is a treasure chest of knowledge and experience with some of the best music and bass related stories you could hope to hear.

Your posting schedule matches my wanna watch bass stuff schedule. Cheers man
Love Tim Landers! Thanks for the great interview, Janek. Would love to see/hear you interview Neil Stubenhaus.
Such a relaxed and interesting conversation, I couldn't stop listening.
Great conversation!
I really love videos like these.
So, please keep ‘m comming every once in a while.
I think other musicians that played with great bassists (and who love to talk about them and their musical experiences with them) would be great too.
🖖
Tim is a BASS BEAST!!!! I remember seeing Vital Information back in the day at The Roxy Theater(~1980-81). I arrived early enough to hear the band during sound check and Tim began playing "Glide" by the amazing group Pleasure!!!! My jaw dropped and I was juiced for the entire concert!!! I need to check my collection for the Gino Vannelli recording Tim played on! Thank you for a fantastic interview!!!
Fantastic, what a great guy, loved every minute.
what a great interview with one of my first bass heroes when starting out…
thru a guitar player interview he did, i learned it was cool to use effects with a bass…
bought the first V.I. record days later, and it has been in constant rotation since…
last night, after years of looking, i saw that has finally hit the music service i get my downloads from…
and today, minutes after waking up, this interview dropped…
thank you for the great conversation…
This conversation brought me such joy, thank you both!
This was super enjoyable - thanks Janek! I got a chance to play with Tim briefly with Lee R and Barnaby and that was a thrill. He was super cool! Zildjian Day 84 with Vinnie and Tim is drum community scripture! Fiyafiyaga got tons of play back in the day and The Perfect Date belongs on any fusion all-time-great list.
I met Tim after his set with Billy and Randy, he was very cool and happy to talk for a few minutes
I was lucky to hear Tim Landers at BIT in 93 at the groove workshops👌🏻
Crimson Jazz Trio! Tim's tone (and playing) on those 2 records is just ridiculous!
Fantastic interview!
Really interesting interview, what a humble guy and really engaging, thanks to you both.
The Spotify playlist is amazing.
awesome as always... love your interviews Janek x
Fantastic interview. And nice to hear Mick Karn referenced amongst others.
Tim’s playing with The Crimson Jazz Trio is stunning. Great interview!
Love this interview! Great to hear the backstory to one of my favorite Vinnie records, Tiger’s Mudd Cake. I live close by to that RI studio you guys mentioned; Normandy Sound (now Triad). I drive by there once in awhile imagining Vinnie in early 80s recording there. Cobham, Ahmad Jamal et al recorded there as well.
I could spend a whole week listen to this.
Great interview, thanks to both of you for your time here
During Jan’s solo in that clip the bass is so prominent and maybe the best thing about it
Fantastic interview, thank you so much for this guys!
LOVE that you do your homework for interviews and thoroughly enjoy "the hang vibe" in all of them; this one was particularly outstanding, thank you!
Also, off-topic: Sam Yahel posted a video on UA-cam within the last couple of weeks about transcribing(maybe 15 minutes or less in length?) in which he makes (what I believe to be) a compelling argument for slowing the music down...If you have time and are so inclined, check it out.
Enjoying your YT content, cheers!
ETA YES, A HANG WITH TIM AND STEVE SMITH, PLEASE!🤗🏋🏾♀️👍🏽
In my undergrad years at UC Riverside in the mid 80s we had a little bar on campus called the Barn... one night a group called Dog Cheese came to perform... I think at that time they were Joni Mitchell's band... I had never and still have never heard live a guitarist with such interesting voicings in his chords.. Put it this way, Vinnie is one of if not my favourite drummer.. I didn't even notice the drums that night...Michael Landau is the shiteeee...
I've heard *of* Tim, but was never really familiar...now I have a new project!!! :D SUPER amazing interview!
22:09 🤯I've been seeing a few Peavey TL-6es on Reverb *when I have DEFINITELY NOT been casually looking at six string basses*, and I just made the TL = Tim Landers connection. 😑 I need more coffee. Also! A double-P-pickup bass!
It must feel cool to casually drop the name of your buddy Steve and it's just understood which world class musician you're talking about.
Nice!!
Sylvia was the Focus hit.
I remember Tim on the Zildjian Day In New York video with Vinnie.
Yeah, with Jan Akkerman on guitar!
Another hit by Focus from about that era was ‘Hocus Pocus’.
🖖
@@admarhermans1 I still have the album Focus 3.
Round Goes The Gossip.
Have not heard that in years
Go!
