There are several types of encrypted USB flash drives on the market. In this video we go over three from Amazon. One is from Kingston and requires a password, one has a fingerprint sensor, and a third has a built in keypad to unlock before even plugging in the thumb drive. The encryption is different for each encrypted flash drive, but each has other advantages and disadvantages.

I just write everything down on paper in an encrypted code, and bury it in my backyard.
Problem with finger print security is that it is not safe from court order access since finger prints are not private. A pass code i.e. number can be considered court safe.
That makes me wonder why you think courts would need access to your USB drives.
Plus, the general consensus that I've seen around the Internet is that "if the goal of [encryption/VPN/Tor/anonymization tools] is to avoid law enforcement, you're already screwed".
thanks for the nice review. while you were reviewing a very small cap version, we have a lot of size capacities in our Secure Key products--ranging from 8GB on up to 1TB.
can't i just put a password protected 7z file on a generic usb drive?
Or even use Bitlocker on windows if you have the Pro version and up. You have to have Pro to enable bitlocker but any version of windows since Windows XP SP3 and up can unlock it and access the drive
Tony Hong Or use a better way of encrypting the drive.
You can. Also there is a easy way too, encrypt the files yourself with the AES encryption algorithm and don't pay for stupid flash drives.
InxaneNinja The only problem, though, is that if a computer with which you use the drive is compromised, a keylogger can record your password. With the fingerprint or the numpad ones, the code is not passed to the computer and nobody can steal it remotely.
@@4pxris3 exactly! I encrypt my files using my own software
My mom works for the DOD and had a spare Kingston DataLocker encrypted thumb drive, so she gave it to me. It's a bit older and only 8GB, but I like it. Plus it's black anodized aluminum and waterproof.

Apricorn Aegis for the win. Comes as a 512GB version with USB 3.0. The best of the best, unexploited as of Blackhat 2018. The others are garbage, can be opened and by way of debug ports can be breached easily.
It can be next to impossible to find anybody who actually knows what they're talking about. There are a lot of garbage devices out there. Thanks. :)
I'm so glad I found your channel! This so James Bond stuff! Thanks!
I have an older model Kingston IronKey and I love it.
ThioJoe, could you make (or have you made) a video talking about what you get as you go up in price for cameras (excluding sensor size) and for lenses, and what you lose as you go down in price?
Even though this video is old, it's still useful. Thank You Soooo much...you really helped me decide which USB encrypted drive I really need...KUDO's to you!!!
Awesome video as always ThioBro!
Used the Kingston datatraveler for at least 4 years and happy with it
I just realized. If you want more layers of security with that keypad flash drive, you could use Bitlocker and an encrypted 7z file in addition to the keypad
dont use bitlocker or 7zip
use truecrypt or veracrypt
btw i think adding multiple layers is unnecessary because modern encryption algorythms like AES or Twofish already use many rounds of encryption and you could just bump that up instead of combining multiple encryption softwares into a whole mess
SanDisk USB drives often include a encryption software for Windows and mac but I personally use LUKS encryption on Linux for my drives
i like how the apricorn device looks with the buttons and it looks like a remo- 6:48 RADIOHEAD FONT
You can get that Apricorn thumbdrive anywhere from 8 gig for $75 to 128 gig for $175.
Just get normal thumbdrive and encrypt it with luks or EFS drive
Hb bitlocker
Well only if you have windows
@@burakarif that's why I included luks

On Apricorn Aegis, what happens after 5 years when battery is dead? Still works or totally reset?
Nice! USB drives is our passion.
ThioJoe, I use lastpass for my password vault as well as making passwords. My question is, I don’t like apps that use their own storage, is that a safe app to use or do you recommend a better password vault/password making app.
Some USB drives come with software on them, though I cannot vouch for SanDisk software...
(I've never used it)
I want something that I can take between my personal Windows PC and Chromebook and also at the university computer lab while keeping the drive locked down. Any suggestions?
Smart. Thanks.
Can this be used with a smart tv to watch private videos? or even a Roku box?
cool video joe
Does that mean the drives that require software can be easily bypassed using another OS?,and also the embedded software can't be setup using another OS
Yay! A new video from Thio Joe!!! I use USB drives all the time. Awesome video too.

I paid $32 for a 128GB Sandisk Ultra Slim USB 3.1 USB drive with the Sandisk Secure Disk drive encryption software....similar to Kingstons software. But the price was better....Would you recommend the Sandisk USB encrypted drives?

Isn't TrueCrypt sort of considered dead and VeraCrypt replaces that? Also I think for Windows 7, only Ultimate and Enterprise have BitLocker.
We use Apricorn drives. They're quite decent.
I like that lenny face option ;)

Hi I am using cryptomator and not sure how I can transfer data from my computer to USB and then to see the file on my other computer. I will be really thankful if any one can tell me.
You should see what it looks like to delete all of the noncritical files from windows. Stuff like icon art and backups, maybe some sidescripts

hey , can you do the video how to upgrade ps2 to xbox 360 , xbox one , ps4
Ay under 100 love the vid
is there a way to turn off the passcode one? because since there's a battery it is powered even if its not plugged in, so if there isn't a way to turn it off, lets say its in your bag and it has important documents on it, and inside the bag all of the keys are just randomly pressed from moving around in your bag, if its moved around too much, the data will be erased and your dead, one disadvantage I found.
The Apricorn has cover made from rubber.
@@viktor3257 oh
The biggest problem with the pinpad usb is that almost anything you might use manually will be crackable by a brute force method.Maybe, if you use a 20 digit decimal key, it would be more secure, but you have to remember such a thing, and most people will just use something like 8 or so digits.
It formats the drive after 10 failed attempts, so you would have to be super lucky even with an 8 digit code which has 10^8 or 100000000 possible combinations.
That is a very good point.I missed/forgot that security measure there.
Even then, if the thief knows what keys you pressed (i.e. fingerprints or finger oils left on the keys), that might trim down the combinations some more. But then again... if the code length is long enough, it would definitely deter the attempt.
@@cldreamthen you can encrpyt the data with software. I saw another comment saying veracrypt and truecrypt would be a good way to add that layer of security
hi can you plz help me. setup file cannot run on my pc i use windows 10 home but all setup file of (.vbe) type cannot run plz help me who to run it if you can.

ThioJoe was my teacher that thought me all about technology legit
And who is your teacher that thought you about grammar legit?
why not make one that creates a small fat32 partition and you make a text document with your password inside then save the file then the small partition unmounts and the real partition mounts? of course automatically clearing that partition as soon as it is plugged in to a computer.
Is the second one compatible with Mac
Anyone else getting these annoying Headspace ads about meditation?
I think their ads are working bc they make me go insane and actually want to meditate
my laptop's battery died and after it charged , i opened it and then a blue screen appeard , options wre "esc" , "f1" and "f8" or something , idk what the otions did because it is in deutch , i bought it from germany , and after it closed , i opened it , and a strange dialogue appeard , it is in english , you can scroll from arrows up and down for options , and sone other keys , i can't explain , i want to know if there is a solution , if not , i can factory reset it with a key combination? please , i am scared , it's windows 10 , 32 bit , acer , 8 gb ram , 1 terra phisical memory , this is all the data i can give
Why isn't cross-compatibility a major criterion? What happens when you only have a Linux or Mac around, you pirate a Windows to access your data? (those with external software)
You forgot to present the best of secure flash drives, which is Kingston IronKey
Man, those poll's.....😂
It's so good, could store my crush photos on my encrypted USB. Better safe than sorry.
Can you review the *encrypted shoe*
So, I just use a standard USB stick. Say 16 GB or so. On it I have a 10 GB encrypted file container that I encrypted using VeraCrypt. In the other 6 GB I keep unencrypted files, but also I keep a portable version of VeraCrypt. Costs < $10 and I trust VeraCrypt's AES encryption with my own 20-40 character alphanumeric password INFINITELY MORE than I do a niche, novelty technology having little reputation to speak of, protected by a four digit PIN number on a dedicated "unhackable" chip, and at 10 times the cost.
The only benefit these things have (and not all of them have the feature) is a complete self-destruct wipe of the drive after too many failed PIN attempts or at the entry of certain special PINs.
Arent those the official slax linux usbs ,are they
Couldn’t you open it up, unsolder the memory chip the put it onto a new board. (Theoretically)
What's up Thiojoe I just love to sit down and just talk about technology
samsung somtimes shows me ads about their SSD with a fingerprint sensor, so it must be something similar to this.

do you still need flash drives?
A used Tiny PC with an encrypted Linux OS is good too.
How are there so many comments already it just came out
That's internet ppl
With bitlocker you can just encrypt drives.
You mean the iStorage UK that clearly states what kind of encryption you are getting?
The blue you showed comes with up to 128GB and is certified six way to Sunday including NATO Restricted.
4:33 FUDisk xD
A luks encrypted flash drive is pretty nice
Google has some drive for logging in. That's pretty interesting too
Ordered one of them
Too bad I don’t trust Google.

You don't want such a thing because you don't trust them?
They already have control over your account. Or do you mean something else?
"FU" Disk LOL
I have an eye-scan encrypted toaster so nobody can steal my toast.
Is there a Linux version of Bit locker?
No, but there is dm-crypt/LUKS that you can use for full-disk encryption on Linux (which is builtin for the most part). AFAIK it's a bit tedious to set up since there's no graphical frontends (that I know of personally) for the commands you need to use for it, unless you use *buntu-based distributions (i.e. Mint) that do that for you (encrypted LVM) when you do a fresh install.
The man pages for "cryptsetup" should help you get started on plain dm-crypt and LUKS if you're interested.
ThioJoe growing a beard? Or Goatee? Do you use an encrypted USB drive, or USB drive encryption software? AND which one is better?
I want to encrypt my 93gb "homework" folder

Oh no
want one
0:21 I like the third one. And I don’t need to password protect my usb drive at all..... unless I want to store Por.... Portal... end portal of Minecraft.... never mind....
Well, whatever you want store there, just don't use the fingerprint drive, that might get messed up while you are trying to see the things you are storing.
Gee Trieste Thanks for the advice! 😁👍
I ❤ Kingston ram and storage
what about bitlocker
The apricorn blows. About 20% of the time files you copy into it just simply won't open anymore. The internal battery charging can get so hot that it becomes uncomfortable to touch.
