    Super interesting- I’m also enjoying the earthtone colors you’ve been using lately. While I do love the purples, blues and greens- these earthtones make my heart sing too.

      Yay thank you! It is funny to see the colors that I use back to back in real time and then how sometimes they end up grouped here in videos. :D

    Interesting experiment! I have to say, I love the way the hawthorn came out with no glauber's. The tonal golds and reds are so pretty!

    I was really hoping you’d do Lichen, I’ve struggled with that color. I have found that adding ammonium sulfate (like dharma recommends) changes the color so it’s no longer green. Every time I dye with it I get something completely different

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  2 роки тому +5

      Since Lichen was a mixture of Leveling and Premetalized dyes I wasn't sure what I might see with it. But it could be a fun one to try Glauber's salt vs Ammonium sulfate vs nothing.

    I definitely started wondering about wilton's violet halfway through the video -- the sheer drama of how fast that red binds & whether you could get that pink tone to spread out more.

    You are so brave; 😲 you picked one of the hardest dyes to do this experiment. 💪🏼 I did a similar experiment as you with the glauber's salt alongside using salt instead. I used a locally made dye, which has a tendency to break if you want it to, but nothing as richly pigmented as you. For me, I found that plain table salt did the same thing. Balance the cost, the difficulty in getting glauber's, and the extra data sheets to store with another chemical, it was really no question which I use now. 🧂 I only use it when I'm trying to achieve a very even toned yarn. Usually a custom colourway 💜

      This is super helpful to know, for sure! I will still try ammonium sulfate and see if I se much of a difference. Sometime I may do side by side with table salt, although only having 2 kettles is a little hard.

      It is so funny - there are so many colors that break but I struggled to think of ones that were dramatic and "tricky" when I needed one that was hard, lol.

    Perhaps the yellow remaining in the the Glauber salt pan is the Glauber salt? Sulphur =yellow?
    Perhaps heat makes the salt yellow?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  2 роки тому +1

      Sulfate is colorless, so I don't think that is it. A lot of "tricky" colors have a slight yellow finish so that isn't super odd in of itself, but it was the one example that we could see of something binding slower.

    I loved this video. This color is in my collection, but out of my comfort zone. Yet, now I find myself wanting a fall sweater in it. Not sure I would use the salt, as I enjoy the variations I get when kettle dyeing, but it is good to know that is an option. Thank you so much, Rebecca!

      I also love variations with kettle dyeing, but it was super fun to see some subtle differences from using salt vs not. I wonder if it could be more dramatic in some conditions.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  2 роки тому +1

      I'm more stirring to try to get the yarn in quickly versus trying to get the colors to strike more to one end. I'm sure it could maybe be better to do a good stir another way , too.

    Just to clarify, at the end you referred to guar gum... Is that synonymous with Glauber's salt? It would be interesting to use the Glauber's salt with the Hyacinth color (isn't that the one that "disappeared"?)

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  2 роки тому +1

      Eek - I tried to find where i thought I said guar gum and I really really didn't mean to say it. I then couldn't find it and thought I was playing tricks. Guar gum is a thickener, and is very different from glauber's salt.

    Any form of salt has been "wasted" especially with reactive dyes. In all my experiments I could not see a need for salt, including reactive dyes, due to results were the same with as it was without

    Is premetallized a usa term? Is it what other countries call super milling dyes?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  2 роки тому +1

      Dharma classifies their dyes in a few categories, including L=Leveling, M=Milling, P=Premetallized. www.dharmatrading.com/information/dharma-acid-dye.html I'm not sure if it is a USA term or a Dharma term.

    Well my first thought wasn't a color, it was a technique - how would glauber's salt affect speckling? Could you use it to prevent speckles from breaking?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  2 роки тому

      I don't think it would prevent speckles from breaking - because it wouldn't clump the pigments so they fall separately if that makes sense. I think breaking with speckles depends on how the colors are milled vs mixed.

    In response to your other youtube site on dyer suppliers, and since I purchased the 3 dye kits from Knitcrate, dyer supplier has nothing in their store is that normal for them?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  2 роки тому

      Hi Evelyn, Dyer Supplier has had some supply chain issues during the last couple of years and so they announced a month or so ago that they're going to reset and start from scratch. (They would frequently sell out of bases and take months to restock them, which wasn't easy for indie dyers who need consistent access to bases.) I'm not sure what the status is of it coming back.
      here is part of the announcement from April:
      Dear Dyer Supplier clients,
      Our mission at Dyer Supplier since starting the business has been to empower hand dyers to succeed at their business. We have attempted to do this in several ways over the years, but principally in two key ways: 1) providing luxury fibers at budget-friendly prices with small minimum order quantities and 2) helping drive sales to our independent dyers through our KnitCrate community of knitters and crocheters.
      Admittedly, being able to accomplish point 1 above has become way more difficult recently. During the past two years with Covid, subsequently with global supply chain issues, and now with the uncertainty surrounding geopolitical turmoil and continued supply chain issues, we have not been able to consistently restock our inventory levels of undyed yarn that you depend on for your own business. If I do not feel that I can reliably restock and carry enough stock of the inventory for you, then I would rather hit the pause button on that side of the business until I can do so. Sourcing yarns for Dyer Supplier is more complex since we deal with various mills internationally, predominantly in Europe and South Africa. The war between Russia and Ukraine and the rising cost of inputs, natural gas, and freight in that side of the world (in addition to increasing cases of Covid) are making it more difficult for me to feel a high degree of confidence in placing orders today for delivery a few months down the road. So for right now, as hard of a business decision it is to purposely stop making money selling our undyed yarn via Dyer Supplier, we think it is the right decision. To be clear, we are not closing down that side of the business, but rather waiting and strategizing until we can reliably source the yarn you need.
      In the meantime, we are putting everything on the shop, including yarn and dyes, on sale at a 40% discount. We want to clear out the stock we have, so we can restock with completely new blends in the future. The discount will automatically be applied at checkout, but the code is DYERSUPPLIER, in case you need to write it in. You can shop the sale here. (note: much of our stock is now sold out as of the date this is posted in the FB group)
      This situation does not affect the KnitCrate side of our business, as we source our yarns for KnitCrate from our partner mills in Peru, which are not being as impacted by the factors mentioned above. Our partner mills in Peru have consistently delivered our KnitCrate monthly yarns on time since November of last year. We are happy that, at least, this part of our business has been stabilizing and growing again.
      Which brings me back to point number “2” I mentioned above about the other way we have strived to empower our hand dyer clients: helping drive sales to our independent dyers through our KnitCrate community of knitters and crocheters. Our team is diligently working on a few projects to help support our hand dyer community through KnitCrate, so please keep a look-out in your inboxes in the coming weeks. As KnitCrate continues to grow and improve post-Covid, we want to also support the hand dyer community that has been such an important part of our journey. As hard of a decision as this has been, we are excited about the new ways we are working on to help stay true to our mission: empowering you to succeed at your business.
      Sincerely,
      Rob and the team at Dyer Supplier and KnitCrate
