Whatever CFL manufacturers claim, CFLs burn out way faster than their rated lives, at least for me. In fixtures that see a lot of on-off use (kitchen, bedrooms, bathroom), they can die in less than a year. I know they'll last longer if you leave them on for up to four hours at a time, but then you're not actually saving any energy over an old 60W bulb you can flick on and off in 30 seconds with no worries. I for one welcome the incoming LED master race.
Some of the newer LEDs do emit light in all directions. Search for "Phillips LED" on Amazon and you will find some very good ones. The Slim Line one is pretty good and cheap too.
Just bought a 3 way LED bulb, 30, 60, 100...something like that, cost $25 + tax!!!! It was an impulse buy as my hardware store had a huge display going on, I will say I'm very happy with it.
Im gonna put these for my exterior lightning. I have 7 of these, and im planning on letting them run 24-7. I estimate the cost of electricity to less than 2.50$ per month! Also perfect for the cold weather! Im a big fan of cfl, i have some in my lightpost outside that are on for a couple years without failing now. Firsttime im buying led to replace the incandescent spots that i never turn on.
I switched to LEDs primarily because when I walk into a room and hit the switch I don't want to wait minutes for the bulb to hit full brightness. The Cree LEDs are amazing..
Very nice UA-cam. Still I have a fine point question. Do LED's distort color? I've been in the residential design industry for years and notice a certain loss of nuanced color features from LED can lights...a dulling of color. The task lighting feature is excellent but seeing custom paint color diminished by the LED light is less than desirable. Any product testing on this area of the LED function? Thank you.
I have been running 8W LEDs globes at home (and just replaced half of them back to CFL) the CFL might use twice the power as an LED but it is twice as bright. i found it hard to read, cook, etc with the low output of a LED light (well the 8W models)
Yeah it can depend on the fixture the A19 globe is in. If that fixture doesn't trap too much light the CFL can be brighter. But also some LED globes have low lumens per watt, and be on the lower end of LED efficacy.
For sure most LED bulbs are still over $20 retail. But CFL's most commonly replace the household A19 Incandescent bulb. And in Home Depot at least, the LED A19 from CREE is $10. When it comes to light output per dollar - that is one of the best LED bulbs on the market.
Great video. Can you post a video or chart about comparing Incandescent wattage to convert to led watts/lumens? As I shop for LED bulbs, they label the wattage but not always the lumens, so I am having a hard time figuring out what an 8 watt light is in comparison to in an incandescent bulb. Thanks
Heat is definitely related to design and the manufacturer. Illustra LED globes are not going to burn anyone, even after being on all night. I know I test them!
I got a camera without UV filtering *smirks* Mmm so I can make pictures of IR and UV. And well I did test it out and my LED bulb.. nothing. Nothing at all just normal light. My CFL bulb .. oh a lovely purplish stream of something poured out. That lovely purple is the color of UV/IR on the foveon sensor. A rather cool experiment.

What application uses a 500 watt halogen bulb? That's pretty big! Generally only about 100W of LED would be needed to replace 500W of Incandescent light output - and a 100W LED heat sink isn't too big. Whats tough at the moment is getting LED to replace 1000W HID (for car dealerships etc) - but even that is more and more common
When I first heard about led bulbs I thought $15 for a bulb. But when they finally hit $12 I bit and got 2 for my desk area as I kept getting headaches and was having problems focusing on printed text or info on the computer. After a week my headaches stopped (I don't think I have had a headache in almost a year now while working when I used to get one at least once a week.) Also the light seemed dimmer, but I could read better. LED's are difficult to put in a living room because they do focus the light in a directional way. We ended up getting a light box on opposite walls and bouncing the light off the ceiling gives a much better "general lighting"
I would also like to mention that the LED Globes still get very hot (nearly burnt myself on a Phillips heat sink after it had been on for an hour) (8W LED non dimmable)

when i first purchase my house 2 years ago, i replaced all the incandescent lightbulbs with cfls. I noticed the electric bill difference right away, i wonder if i change to leds will i see a big difference. I know leds are still very expensive, hopefully in a couple of years the price will go down.
they need to come down alot more in price before it's worth switching from CFL to LED. Give it a few more years, just keep the CFL till they burn out and replace them with LED when that happens, definitely don't remove a working bulb, the savings aren't as dramatic as the 75% reduction in power usage from switching from an incandescent to a CFL.
shadow is more a function of the direction of a light source. If you want less shadow, you should use more light sources in differing directions. Basically, shadows are cast when one object stands in between a light and another object (on which the shadow is cast). if you light behind and around the shadow casting object, you're more likely to eliminate the shadows, or at least greatly reduce them.
Been waiting for LED technology to be able to produce the same white temperature as CFL, but they still can't do it. I think they look weird still, either too warm yellow or too cold blue. If you buy something equivalent to "bright white" the Kelvin is wrong so it looks weird. LED technology is still struggling to produce a neutral white too.
It's true that for the standard household shape (A19) the strongest LED bulbs are only replacing 60W incandescent. But soon, very soon. ALL LED is only getting stronger in light output, longer in lifetime, and cheaper in price!
1) 50% of CFL light isn't trapped in a can light because they make BR30 CFL for this purpose with reflector integrated. You might say you were comparing a different bulb style but this apples to apples because the BR30 LED version would be the one used properly in the can lights. Ironically a few seconds later your can downlight example even had a BR30 bulb in it! 2) LED bulbs today don't just point their light down. There are ample designs out there where they achieve nearly 360' illumination. 3) A 15W CFL would produce significantly more light, around 800 lumens while the 7W and 8W A19 bulbs you offer are only 450-480 lumens. If lesser light is acceptable then a lesser wattage CFL would be too. The LED bulbs ARE more efficient, but not nearly as much as implied in the video and there are MUCH more efficient LED bulbs available in the market. 4) Nobody is actually getting 50K hours out of LED bulbs in typical use scenarios. Components like capacitors inside most are only rated for about 3K to 10K hours but manufacturers are being despicable in only rating for the LED life when it's one of the last components in the bulb to fail on its own without an upstream component failure to blame. 5) The CFL equivalent is not $4. I can get them for $1 to $2 each or the local electric company is giving them away free. Granted, since the making of the video, prices on LED bulbs have dropped greatly too so for something as essential as lighting, any other parameter would be a better one to focus on rather than cost. Energy savings of either swamp the rest when converting from incandescent bulbs. 6) Drawback myths: - There is barely any mercury in modern CFL. Exposure levels if broken would be lower than eating a tuna fish sandwich. - Durability? Perhaps in some unique situations but the average person seldom breaks light bulbs. I am not arguing that CFL is superior, not at all. There are great LED bulbs out there which I prefer to CFL but only if I'm being picky. Those bulbs have enough merit that people don't need to mislead in order for their advantages to be obvious.

However, the same thing happens with LED bulbs. The cheaper ones, especially generic brands, tend to use less efficient drivers so they have lower lumens per wattage. Cheap bulbs often have only 50 to 70 lumens per watt while modern major brand LED bulbs today have about 80+ lumens per watt. Future readers, take note of the date. Next year these numbers will be higher and then higher the next year and so on. CFL bulb efficiency will not rise much more but LED bulb efficiency will continue to climb slowly for at least the next few years as great advancements have been made in recent years and there is no reason to believe that will stop soon.

M Goudsmits It's all about context. 80+ lumens is the standard for affordable light bulbs. A light bulb is an integrated product with losses from the driver circuit accounted for and derated for heat lumen reduction, the phosphor dome, globe, and sometimes a reflector. It is never accurate to just use the LED spec sheet value instead of the actual measured lumen output of a product! Sure, there are LEDs with 200 lumens/watt now but then you integrate them into a product and make it into something cost effective that people want to buy, THEN measure the lumens. You seem to be unfamiliar with LED light bulbs to not realize the truth in my statement about 80+ lumens, today... next year the figure will be higher and the next year higher still.
M Goudsmits It's not about which is better, it's about clear, accurate information which you were drifting away from with comments like the suggestion that inefficient drivers are a concern with CFL when they are far more of a concern with generic LED bulbs. There is a larger difference in efficiency between good and bad LED bulb drivers than between good and bad CFL unless you go back decades ago to early prototypes that had a huge linear double-line-frequency transformer driver output instead of a switching boost ballast circuit. Many people already have CFL not only in use but a stock to replace those in use so the question can become at what point should people abandon and throw away perfectly working CFL lights and spend money to replace them with LED, particularly when good LED bulbs still cost ~ 4X as much as average CFL bulbs. Sadly there isn't a way to include average LED bulbs in the discussion because there is a very large divide between the quality of the bad and good LED bulbs, much more so than good and bad CFL because the good ones are only pennies more per bulb. CFL is definitely not better than "GOOD" quality LED bulbs. The ones in this video aren't very good. 4' tube T8 fluorescent still beats all LED & CFL, except in high on-off cycling applications or very low temperatures a good LED bulb pulls ahead, but ironically enough in very low temperatures many people would be better off with incan bulbs to serve a double purpose as miniature space heaters.
Since this was recorded in 2013, it is not up to date. LED lights can cause irreparable damage to the retinas of persons who use LED lights. Check for yourself.
Color temperature actually has more visual affect on colors than CRI of lights. Color temperature quite clearly affects rendered colors. A warm light just like the sunset will make things look yellow washed and not like you usually see them. The sun has a higher color temperature of midday than at sunset or morning. Typically 5600k as midday and as low as 2000k at sunset and morning. CRI is legit but generally color temperature has more of an effect on how things appear. At the end of the day true color is all relative as it all depends on the light source. No one can say what is the godly perfect light source. Who can really dictate what color temperature is "correct" heck other suns even have different color temperatures to ours and up in space our sun is a different color temperature as to what we experience down here under the atmosphere. So......
CRI is when a white light appears white but in fact doesn't have equal amounts of frequencies. Thus when hitting something like a bowl of fruit one particular fruit may seem more vivid than the other because it has more available light in that spectrum to bounce back. In no way does that mean it's correct or incorrect though. No such thing as correct light and objects really have no real color or brightness. It's all relative to the light source. The amount of light reflected from them is in no way correct or incorrect. You could have a lot of light bouncing off or only a little or then in the middle. Nowhere is "correct".

Actually, the diodes in LED bulbs have toxic chemicals in them. But they're in solid form, & not as much as in a compact floro bulb. So they're easier to dispose of & easier to contain if broken.
Nothing compared to a Fluorescent tube having mercury and emitting pure UV light that emits with a coating on the glass. LED's have some phosphorus. Wow. Eviiiiiil. lol. By that logic you should not even but any electronic device as virtually all have something that isn't totally safe to eat. Such as most batteries, Or even lead solder on a PCB, lol. But to compare those things to Fluorescent tubes it's quite the same. Fluorescent tubes are just nasty in most ways.
LEDs really seem like a no brainier to me. They're the most efficient, least likely to malfunction and burn your house down, don't generally contain toxic materials, and last so much longer.
LED's light bulbs are still more expensive because research and development for high-quality bulbs are made, also, LED need heat sinks (the metal fins under the light, which are usually made from aluminum) because these semiconductors are prone to too much heat, just like computer processors. That increases the costs as well. Now another problem is the market. They just aren't pushing LED's that much yet.
That is not my experience , all the CFLs that i have still work , all the LEDs that i got , died , only 1 remains and that one buzzes now so im sure its going to die soon .Also your face is green , so its not hard for me to see that it is a bad light , its not a tungsten light , that was a LED light for video . And clearly i can see it , what is more important is skin , its most seen in the skin . So if you want perfect skin , there is no substitute for tungsten . Sadly .

Which color temprature creates more shadow becoz i would to use the lights in video shooting which creates less shadow

10dls per bulb is a bit pricey. Most of what I looked for online list around 6usd, but I think you need to buy in a bulk.

LEDs aren't "instant on". I installed LED Vanity lights that took about half a second to turn on after flipping the switch.

M Goudsmits Incorrect in most 1st world countries which regulate such things. An inefficient driver would make the CFL bulb still use the stated wattage but would produce less light.
However, the same thing happens with LED bulbs. The cheaper ones, especially generic brands, tend to use less efficient drivers so they have lower lumens per wattage. Cheap bulbs often have only 50 to 70 lumens per watt while modern major brand LED bulbs today have about 80+ lumens per watt. Future readers, take note of the date. Next year these numbers will be higher and then higher the next year and so on.
CFL bulb efficiency will not rise much more but LED bulb efficiency will continue to climb slowly for at least the next few years as great advancements have been made in recent years and there is no reason to believe that will stop soon.

80+ lumens per watt, is no longer the standard, most led's and LED strips and Lamps using pcb mounted LED that I work with have 120 to 130 lumens per Watt
M Goudsmits It's all about context. 80+ lumens is the standard for affordable light bulbs. A light bulb is an integrated product with losses from the driver circuit accounted for and derated for heat lumen reduction, the phosphor dome, globe, and sometimes a reflector.
It is never accurate to just use the LED spec sheet value instead of the actual measured lumen output of a product!
Sure, there are LEDs with 200 lumens/watt now but then you integrate them into a product and make it into something cost effective that people want to buy, THEN measure the lumens. You seem to be unfamiliar with LED light bulbs to not realize the truth in my statement about 80+ lumens, today... next year the figure will be higher and the next year higher still.

It's not about which is better, it's about clear, accurate information which you were drifting away from with comments like the suggestion that inefficient drivers are a concern with CFL when they are far more of a concern with generic LED bulbs.
There is a larger difference in efficiency between good and bad LED bulb drivers than between good and bad CFL unless you go back decades ago to early prototypes that had a huge linear double-line-frequency transformer driver output instead of a switching boost ballast circuit.
Many people already have CFL not only in use but a stock to replace those in use so the question can become at what point should people abandon and throw away perfectly working CFL lights and spend money to replace them with LED, particularly when good LED bulbs still cost ~ 4X as much as average CFL bulbs. Sadly there isn't a way to include average LED bulbs in the discussion because there is a very large divide between the quality of the bad and good LED bulbs, much more so than good and bad CFL because the good ones are only pennies more per bulb.
CFL is definitely not better than "GOOD" quality LED bulbs. The ones in this video aren't very good. 4' tube T8 fluorescent still beats all LED & CFL, except in high on-off cycling applications or very low temperatures a good LED bulb pulls ahead, but ironically enough in very low temperatures many people would be better off with incan bulbs to serve a double purpose as miniature space heaters.
Since this was recorded in 2013, it is not up to date. LED lights can cause irreparable damage to the retinas of persons who use LED lights. Check for yourself.
Color temperature actually has more visual affect on colors than CRI of lights.
Color temperature quite clearly affects rendered colors. A warm light just like the sunset will make things look yellow washed and not like you usually see them.
The sun has a higher color temperature of midday than at sunset or morning. Typically 5600k as midday and as low as 2000k at sunset and morning.
CRI is legit but generally color temperature has more of an effect on how things appear. At the end of the day true color is all relative as it all depends on the light source. No one can say what is the godly perfect light source. Who can really dictate what color temperature is "correct" heck other suns even have different color temperatures to ours and up in space our sun is a different color temperature as to what we experience down here under the atmosphere.
So......
CRI is when a white light appears white but in fact doesn't have equal amounts of frequencies. Thus when hitting something like a bowl of fruit one particular fruit may seem more vivid than the other because it has more available light in that spectrum to bounce back.
In no way does that mean it's correct or incorrect though. No such thing as correct light and objects really have no real color or brightness. It's all relative to the light source.
The amount of light reflected from them is in no way correct or incorrect. You could have a lot of light bouncing off or only a little or then in the middle. Nowhere is "correct".

What are you on about? While Edison did invent the Incandescent bulb, Tesla didn't invent the LED. And just because Edison invented the incandescent bulb doesn't mean he would be against all other bulbs.
I'm not saying that Tesla invented the LED bulbs, I'm just saying how Thomas Edison would hate to know that some other bulbs is Better than his Incandescent Bulb, it was like How Thomas Edison made an Advertisement about how bad and Dangerous AC Generators are by Electrocuting a living Elephant, And just because Nikola Hates Edison and so as Edison to Tesla and that the very reason I included Tesla.
David Irving Edison didnt invent the incandescent light bulb. He robbed lots of peoples inventions and took credit fro them himself. Joseph Swan invented it.

Actually, the diodes in LED bulbs have toxic chemicals in them. But they're in solid form, & not as much as in a compact floro bulb. So they're easier to dispose of & easier to contain if broken.

Nothing compared to a Fluorescent tube having mercury and emitting pure UV light that emits with a coating on the glass.
LED's have some phosphorus. Wow. Eviiiiiil. lol.
By that logic you should not even but any electronic device as virtually all have something that isn't totally safe to eat. Such as most batteries, Or even lead solder on a PCB, lol.
But to compare those things to Fluorescent tubes it's quite the same. Fluorescent tubes are just nasty in most ways.

LEDs really seem like a no brainier to me. They're the most efficient, least likely to malfunction and burn your house down, don't generally contain toxic materials, and last so much longer.
Why LED's are more expensive, maybe because they perform just better? OLED might use even less energy.
LED's light bulbs are still more expensive because research and development for high-quality bulbs are made, also, LED need heat sinks (the metal fins under the light, which are usually made from aluminum) because these semiconductors are prone to too much heat, just like computer processors. That increases the costs as well.
Now another problem is the market. They just aren't pushing LED's that much yet.
My bulbs keep blowing every few weeks that's why I'm switching to led

That is not my experience , all the CFLs that i have still work , all the LEDs that i got , died , only 1 remains and that one buzzes now so im sure its going to die soon .Also your face is green , so its not hard for me to see that it is a bad light , its not a tungsten light , that was a LED light for video . And clearly i can see it , what is more important is skin , its most seen in the skin . So if you want perfect skin , there is no substitute for tungsten . Sadly .
