As a (fledgling) Computer Vision Researcher, The AI models that try to get the meaning from the sentences you type are actually trained primarily on Wikipedia-style image captions (with CLIP, OpenAI's model, being trained on Wikipedia captions themselves) This culminates in the AI actually mapping things better if they're formatted with more details and a sentence structure! This is probably why "Pizza John Green by Van Gogh" melded john green and Van Gogh, and something like "A Van Gogh painting of Pizza John Green" may yield better results. It's weirdly kinda counter-intuitive when compared to how search engine AI has trained us to type concisely, but AI is weird (and definitely getting scary good at making images.)

Is it actually stealing images like Hank said, or is it making new ones? (Well, “new.” Human-created images aren’t new either.) I don’t understand at all how it works.
@@amykathleen2 I’m not an expert on this stuff so take what I say with a bunch of salt, but it seems to me that it’s “stealing” as much as every human artist who has ever made anything. It gathers data from seeing other art, and generates something new from that gathered data.
It’s generating an image of random noise, then attempting to match that random image to the “average” image of whatever prompt you gave it. So if you put in pizza as a prompt, it would generate random noise, then alter the pixels to get closer to what the pizzas in its database look like.
So its creations are genuinely unique because they are based on randomness. This is why it can make different things from the same prompt.
@@MaximEyes But that doesn't take into account that some datasets use artwork without the original artist's permission. Is it copying then if you have a large scale network that can perceive and recreate details better than some humans that's trained on stolen art?

While the AI generators have done some... interesting work here, I agree with the dooblydoo: the actual human artists who make all of our pizza john art are way better. So, y'know, I am excited and horrified of what they're gonna do with the prompts Hank gave the AI generator. DFTBA, nerdfighter artists.
"Better" is subjective. Whether an image is highly emotionally interesting to engage with will depend on your personal history and make-up. That's why life constantly wants to create more diverse individuals (animals, vegetables, minerals, etc.), so that each of them can create something that no one else could create, allowing the collective to continue to work to serve all individuals' needs in an ever-more-effective way. And the more technology takes over the jobs that us living things don't love doing, the more we're free to do what we love.
Whether you are best suited and most interested in working in health care, being a designer, craftsperson, artist, teacher, social organizer, scientist, or philosopher, you will be able to do it, freely, and it won't matter what your body is made up of. And there won't be competition, as everyone creates and/or explores some unique niche part of the universe.

It is not actually taking over the job of the artist, because the ai cannot be creative, only random. It can only scramble what humans have already created, there is no AI art without human art.
And anyways, how does this hypothetical post scarcity world even apply to art? A carrot harvested by tractor is no different from a carrot harvested by a human hand, but you can't say the same about art. Until we create AI that has sentience, it cannot truly "create" art, it can only steal and randomly mutate, because art is about expression. I mean this in the most basic sense, i'm not trying to be pretentious here. You are thinking about art as a commodity first, when in a post scarcity world like you imagine, art doesn't need to be a commodity. It can be created and enjoyed without the need for it to make profits. Imagine a world where books, music, movies, ect, are all ai generated. terrible thought, right, and AI just repeating old ideas forever? why would that be different with visual art?
@@vulixirus There is no need to "defend" anything in existence. It's here because reality needed it to be here.
As for the machine learning programs generating images and text, they are indeed creating, as something new comes into existence that didn't exist before. It's the same thing that humans do, "stealing" and randomly "scrambling" the stuff that they've observed from their own experiences into something novel.
I don't call machine learning systems' creations art, but then I don't call most creative efforts art, as I consider art to be a specific kind of creation involving emotional exploration. But that's just me. Other people call a beautiful sunset art. So it's all subjective there. Sounds like you might actually have a similar meaning of "art" as I do. I don't say it requires "sentience" but it requires emotions, which might be similar to what you're thinking.
And I'm not talking about art as a commodity, but the OP was. Which is why I offered a perspective where it doesn't matter what sort of system - animal, vegetable, mineral, etc. - creates media, as what actually matters is how well it serves some individual personal preference. AI generated images are no better or worse than human, or elephant, or tree, generated images, because better is subjective. You might like the images I make, I might like the images Midjourney+you make, and someone else might like the images that a bower bird makes. So, a world where only computers generate images isn't inherently terrible, if that's what we like. It wouldn't be repeating, as it's literally generating novel images, just like humans, and all other complex systems do.

@@Nortarachanges There are multiple meanings of "art" going on. That's probably causing lots of confusion.
1. The general reality is that there are infinite personal/subjective meanings of the word "art": as in a beautiful sunset or an emotionally experimental creative process or a conversation.
2. OP's personal meaning of art is the primary one I responded to, and they refer to humans being the real "artists" while the software is not
3. My response to the OP offered another viewpoint suggesting that whether or not an image is "better" is subjective and in the eye of the beholder, and since we all need at least somewhat different things in life, it's good to have many diverse creators of images, including software and humans and all other forms of image production, so that everyone's needs are served, instead of just those who like the images humans make.
I'm thinking "His Eat is Johtta ioit oi Pizzzi John's Johnaiurant" might need to be a Pizzamas shirt next year 😆
We’re at that cute stage in AI’s childhood when we get a huge kick out of all the cute things it’s saying as it’s learning to talk.
I was hoping to buy a t-shirt and/or something else for Pizzamas this year but sadly the exchange rate is just terrible - but the good news is that next year I will hopefully have a chance to buy Nerdfighteria’s interpretations of these ridiculous prompts!
I honestly would buy a t-shirt of that one pizzajohn design... but use it as a template and have an artist recreate it so it still has a human touch :)

I will always wonder how I can love so much your stuff in general, yet on this special week you mix exactly 3 things that are pet peeves to me. Pizzas, pajamas, and fútbol. I saw an exhibition for MASS Design group recently at the National Building Museum in DC. This is an architecture firm that works with Partners in Health to design of hospitals, schools in rural African countries. Everything about their work, their philosophy of locally sourcing materials, designing sustainably, and engaging the local communities in all stages of the process is aspirational to me as an architecture student. It’s really cool that Hank and John are raising money to support this and I was so happy to accidentally see the vlogbrothers charity I’ve heard about online in real life. If you live around DC I highly recommend visiting the exhibition!

There are quite a few people out there nowadays that recognize that we need hope and how our global connection tends to spiral many of us into depression. But nobody does as good a job as you both do. You not only "preach" hope as so many do, but you also lead by example in a wonderful way.
You guys gave me back my hope in humanity and pulled my out of the deadly spiral of nihilism. It might have taken 10 years or so but I eventually got there.

For the "colored pencil illustration" (2:39) it included a garbled version of an artist's signature. I think that is really interesting. All the input images of colored pencil illustrations were drawn by people, who signed and dated their work-- usually in the bottom right corner. So to the AI, that is an important feature of a colored pencil illustration. I think it is a powerful visual representation of the fact that AI art is built off the labor of real human artists who did not necessarily consent to having their work used in this way. Signatures are how we indicate identity and ownership, so it feels very fitting for the AI art to have this distorted non-signature.
The consent conversation is an interesting one, but it seems to me that consent has never had much bearing on the dissemination and use of intellectual property. It's unclear why we would start prioritizing that now, especially since most AI-generated images actually aren't just remixes of existing images (except in the sense that all images produced by humans are as well).
@@41-Haiku I think it's the fact that when artists share their works online, they know and accept that it's going to be stolen and used else where. But image generation AIs are new, and so artists had no idea that their works would be used in this way when they posted their works online. I feel that new artists posting artworks today won't feel as negatively towards AIs as they know about AIs and are implicitly consenting when posting online.
To expand upon your point about AIs not stealing, AIs are trained on billions of images. Each artist's contribution is microscopic, equivalent to just a few numbers. Hardly anything resembling their works exists in the AIs, the AIs have truly learnt how to generate new images.
The spiral-eye Pizza John reminds me of Hank's "You can see my eye in my eye."

Just ordered my Pizza John cardigan and hand towel set, and having moved to Indianapolis since last Pizzamas I'm now manifesting a personal delivery from the pizza man himself. Lol, not really, but it was really sweet seeing John do some personal deliveries in years past. That was so above and beyond 😅
It is shocking how much the AI images have dream-like qualities, like details that don't quite make sense, text that looks like text and feels like it makes sense but is gibberish, and so on.
