      You're right. Slavery was evil. What we have to remember is it was hundreds of years ago. Doesn't mean we should forget history. What we should do is be thankful for what we have today. History was very cruel. Look at the Romans for example. History was all about conquering a nation. We are not history. Today we have opportunities, although there are times someone will be descriminated, because that's just the evil world we live in. We have to remember opportunities are available and live is much better today. We shouldn't always feel victimized.

    Kanye is trying to say that we should emancipate ourselves from mental slavery.

  • @VaiComDeus89
    @VaiComDeus89 6 років тому +38

    What Kanye is saying is that we need to move forward from the constant referral to slavery as it only keeps us mentally enslaved. We as black people need to focus on how we can get out the bottom of the economic_____. Having the victim mentality does not allow you to grow as you will always expect others to change when in fact you should change yourself. Stop expecting others to change, you have to change and stop being the victim. In other words empower ourselves so that we are in an even playing field when it comes to social and economic issues. We have been ( Not me - but I mean we as in black people) have been voting with the democratic party which have really done nothing to get us past economic situation we are in today. The Demo party has instead used the poor to elevate their self interests while the poor remained poor or became worst. We need to think more freely and be willing to disagree with people without becoming enemies or succumbing to violence. We also need to stop pointing the finger constantly and instead look in the mirror as to the reason why we have not elevated ourselves economically. There are very little conglomerate companies out there owned and run by blacks that are pushing the black economic rise. Kanye is trying to get us all to think about getting out the mental prison we as black people have been in by constantly expecting a hand out through the feeling of entitlement. We have to create our own and stop taking everything told to us as true and learn to question and think critically rather than going with the flow or agreeing with the masses. The masses are not always right, the masses are sometimes going with the flow. The majority of people in this country are not free thinkers, they are followers - we need more leaders and free thinkers. The world does not have to be in war due to disagreement, we can agree to disagree yet still coexist - this doesn't apply to every situation, but that is the message I feel he is trying to convey.

      The Prudentials Show people also need to stop letting their ignorance cause them to rush to judgement simply because he didn’t explicitly say certain things...there is a saying called read between the lines. He is not an idiot, his parents were well educated, so I highly doubted that what he said is what he meant. Before rushing to judgment we need to think critically before making an informed response. You also have to understand that he is using this discussion as marketing for his upcoming album/songs. People just have to think better, instead of letting the media to form their thinking.

    Kanye absolutely did not say slavery was a choice. in fact he made a point at the beginning to not use the term slavery instead choosing to use the word prison. he then explained why he did not want to use the word slavery. then the tall black man ignored that fact and went on a delusional rant as if Kanye did not use the word prisoner instead of slavery anyways. when Kanye tried to respond he shouted him down and would not let him speak. some people are afraid of not being victims because that is their sole identity. without it they don't know who they are. so, for the sake of conversation, lets just say that they are right and white people wake up every day, get in our trucks and drive around trying to figure out how to hold black people down. even if that were true, what are you besides that? you decide if that is all that you are not white people. that is what I believe Kanye was trying to say. you can be something more than a prisoner if you decide to. its only in your head.

While Van feeling strongly about, the way that Kanye communicated his thought, he and others who agree with Van are reacting too emotionally. So emotionally that they're missing the point. Half the ppl commenting (good or bad) about Kanye’s opinions, wouldn’t even take 1hr of their time to watch documentaries on the origin of Salvery/ sales of slaves / North Africa middleastern slave trade. Or more importantly “revolt of 1811” or the Underground Railroad. Stories of plantation owners who freed their own slaves, before it was even a thing. There is no one box to place this in. Some slaves made choices, some never had the chance, some were seized from families. Others sold into slavery by their own families. Some fought along side the southern confederacy, others killed their white plantation owners; Inspiring people to seize opportunities (while they still exist in America) Rather than focusing effort on who deserves the blame, sounds like a noble cause. But a good question is: how long can the Democratic Party continue? With 90% rich white career politicians telling poor black communities to be their largest voting group? Hmm

  • @turquoiseaqua8312
    @turquoiseaqua8312 6 років тому +2

    Greetings...although i know that slavery was NOT a choice we have to know and remember that the country of Haiti rebelled against their oppressors. Although they are still suffering because of that choice, they still collectively decided to fight against. Our poverty is not a choice but many have fought to get out of their circumstances.Harriet Tubman provided a choice to the people she rescued live free or die at her own hands instead of the White man"s. It"s crazy that we are so quick to judge kanye instead of truly hearing him, we are so caught up in etiquette that if someone doesn't say it properly or just right, then we assume he meant that Blacks had control over going into slavery...let's be clear we had no choice but death...and many could not afford that choice, although many did.. but even today we are beating down the gates to eat with whites who don't like us or want us there, but we choose to go and beg instead of building our own. We choose to give away all of our earnings, we choose in many cases not to fight when fight real punches is what is needed. We bow, we pray, we protest in hopes of getting some minute amonut of respect when we could choose to build up the black community, we could choose to go left instead of right but the hatred of others often makes us feel we have no choices, but that is what the forces that be want us to believe, because they profit from our miseducation. Van although you checked kanye and it was great please consider that you too are fluent in the white language just like most of us who have made it to college however, trump being the ass that he is does not take away the fact that he may actually help blacks more than obama..obama didn't deal with the overcrowding and overjailing of blacks in prisons..he didn't address the fact that blacks are ao impoverished because every race of people are allowed to come here and build except for blacks that are already here. He didn't address the fact that to truly make America great again we must focus on america and all americans before we open the flood gates, can we 1st be seen as equals. He didn't address the gang banging and killing culture that diretly derives from poverty and racism. He didn't want to ruffle any feathers...so he stayed sweet, professional and he didn't address anything that would make him seem like he even cared about black people..but voting for him was a choice and supporting trump is also a choice and although we don't get to choose everything God grant me the serenity and wisdom to always know the difference. Let's just say it is my choice not to walk in white neighborhoods at night because their hatred is not a choice as much as it is inmate..like it is my choice not beat down the doors of ihop because their racist values should have provided us no other choice but to patron somewhere else. Somehow i understood kanye and know that many would lie on a floor getting kicked in the teeth as if they have no other choice. Bless up! Jah guidance and protection not just for America but for this entire world.😔✌

    I will never forgive or forget the past... i dont believe anyone made a choice to be enslaved. I am not even a huge fan of Kanye's music so I'm not trying to be a fanboy either. But he did make more statements than just one sentence that seems to be taken out of context. I dont believe he meant that "slavery was a choice"... i feel like he had a point that that generation of people were strong and could have dominated had they made a choice to rebel. I cant speak for anyone else but id hope noone is proud of the slavery aspect, but i am proud that some people thought of it as wrong and fought a war over it to stop that type of thing as well.
    Im sure ill get blasted for that opinion because i am white and from Wisconsin... but up here, history does exist absolutely. But that does not mean people can work together for a better future.

    Nat Turner
    Nat Turner's Rebellion (also known as the Southampton Insurrection) was a slave rebellion that took place in Southampton County, Virginia, during August 1831.[3] Led by Nat Turner, rebel slaves killed from 55 to 65 people, at least 51 being white.[4] The rebellion was put down within a few days, but Turner survived in hiding for more than two months afterwards. The rebellion was effectively suppressed at Belmont Plantation on the morning of August 23, 1831.[5]
    There was widespread fear in the aftermath of the rebellion, and white militias organized in retaliation against the slaves. The state executed 56 slaves accused of being part of the rebellion. In the frenzy, many non-participant slaves were punished. Approximately 120 slaves and free African Americans were murdered by militias and mobs in the area.[1][2] Across the South, state legislatures passed new laws prohibiting education of slaves and free black people,[6] restricting rights of assembly and other civil rights for free black people, and requiring white ministers to be present at all worship services.

      Ultimate Perspective Wake up!! and understand what Kanye is saying. Slavery only lasted 246 years. When he says "400 years" he means that Black people in America today won't let go of the past and keep playing victims of something that is non-existent in America today. Kanye could have explained this better.. But you honestly don't need half a brain to understand what he meant. It also helps watching the full 30min video to get the full context of this interview. TMZ and the liberal media have done a great job warping this interview and cutting the pieces out to make him sound crazy. But he's not!

    Slavery was a choice, just a terribly, shitty one. Think about it. You had a choice, be a slave or die. Many think dying isn't an option so they immediately think there is no choice. Just because the choice is horrible and the worst choice ever, doesn't change that it's a choice.

  • @KristinM2288

    What Kanye said was super fucked up. The way he said it was super fucked up. But I think he was trying to talk about slavery in a different way. If you look at the context of the conversation, he was talking about the media. He was talking about mental slavery. He was talking about how “they” have power over you. How “their” power makes us slaves. I don’t think he meant to talk about racial slavery, but he clearly didn’t think about how he was saying it.

  • @KELLSEY444
    @KELLSEY444 6 років тому +1

    Kanye was saying free thought will prevent people from becoming enslaved. The world is no longer black and white, unless people keep it that way. YES you can support a conservative president AND have your own opinion about every issue on the table. The current division, and an inability to reason through a conversation, is killing any opportunity we have to create unity with each other. Public ignorance, and being fed lies, is at an all time high. How about we drop the shield of division and give one another the benefit of the doubt??? Kanye (like most of us) is better in a one on one conversation than in the middle of an energy charged room. Thank god that will not keep him from trying to make his point, if we don't allow change, nothing will ever change.

  • @virgilgambrell7154

    I believe what Kanye is trying to say is that we as a people at one point in time were absolutely powerless against slavery, but as time continued everything and everyone evolved into something new and different which brings us to this very day. We as a people still refuse to allow ourselves to break those mental chains and shackles of oppression that has ultimately and still is preventing us as a people to within our minds, bodies, and spirit respect, embrace, and love each other freely as a people in this day in age like we should. We do, and a lot of us are definitely guilty of it, still live by the Willie Lynch - Jim Crow doctrine which has done nothing but cause confusion, division, death and hardship among us to this very day. Please lets not entirely convict Kanye without taking the time to psycho analyze what all he may be really is trying to share with us. God bless you all!!🙄

    Catch 22 here because ppl keep speaking about slavery and lies when they won’t even address the lies behind slavery. Most slaves didn’t even come from Africa and the guy who gets credit for finding America, Cristoforo Colombo (Or Christopher Columbus), acknowledged this fact. The fact that he wrote about the copper colored ppl/negros in his memoirs/diary and how they captured them and enslaved them (do your own research and fact checks if you think I’m wrong) and sold/exchanged them in other countries for other slaves. My ancestors weren’t from Africa...they were born and bred right here in the U.S. of A.! We must first know our history or end up in mental slavery...in which we have. Now, I don’t support any political agenda other than my own. And if that aligns with a particular person on a particular topic(s), subject(s) and idea(s), then so be it. I find it strange that so many agrees with Ye’s concept and idea of “free thought,” yet, wants him to control it. Free thought has no control. It’s just ones way of speaking ones opinions, thoughts and ideas on/of whatever the subject. But we must understand that when a person chooses to use this thought, we must understand the truths and falsehoods within it and be able to separate them from ones opinion. However, that’s where the problem is...we’ve been told how to think for so long that we can no longer identify the difference. My apologies for the long post...

Kanye is an artist, a philosopher and a person who owns his own thoughts, we need to respect each other and each others ways. This has NOTHING to do with his mental health, saying he needs his meds for that is nonsense. He said what he said, and he knows why he said it, and he was talking about a mindset.

    Though the message might be poorly delivered, my interpretation of what he's trying to say in the bigger scheme of things is that people should be more free, authentic and not be oppressed by the standards set by society. I think by "choice" he meant that for the amount of people to stay slaves for over hundred of years without any type of real revolution implied that people gave up and accepted their slave status - therefore became a "choice". Frankly I'm tired of people using the race card so casually now days without taking accountability for their behavior. I'm a woman of color but for how long are we going to rely on the past and feel bad for ourselves (or should I say ancestors) and use it as an excuse for any type of failure or obstacles in life (regardless of skin color) . I was never a fan of Kanye but believe in this case he was actually trying to spread positivity and had good intentions. People shouldn't get so caught up with one statement taking out of context and the sensationalism created by the media.

    When the British were infiltrating Ghana then the Gold Coast. In the midlands of Ghana the woman named Yaa Asantewaaa fought the British Advancement. Now most black people who were enslaved in America come from the the Cape Coast in Ghana. They was no resistance right from Ghana to the USA. Looks like they wanted to be slaves they could have revolted or fought till death like Yaa Asantewaa with the help of other Africans or people of the Gold Coast now Ghana. This bit speaks a lot about black mentality.
