It is important for pharmacists to advise patients/carers to call their doctor immediately if they or their children experience mood changes, sadness, depression or fear whilst using Montelukast. Patients should also be encouraged to lodge an adverse drug reaction report if the side effects are experienced as the US FDA and the Australian TGA are currently looking into the neuropsychiatric side effects and are trying to establish the true regularity of these side effects. The most current research states that the neuropsychiatric side effects are common in children.
