I am listening to this podcast for years and I saw your comment and I was confused, then I had the revelation. It's Ceri... Not Sarry (short for Sarah). WOW.
I usually just listen to the podcast on my commute but decided to check out the video versions for funsies. I was missing out! They talk with their hands a lot and it's kinda adorable. Also, it's nice to see photos of what they're talking about during the fact off.
I love this podcast so much but I'm autistic so I say all the weird stuff I've learned from watching every single episode of this podcast dozens of times. I want to be a greatly successful and knowledgeable science communicator.
Re: the spider: I'm with Hank, it's somewhat like that time on Apollo 12 when Alan Bean accidentally pointed the color TV camera at the sun when setting it up, burning out the video tube. The spider is the equivalent of Al Bean having a vacuum tube factory in his pocket, or something like that. It's a really strained metaphor, but you get the idea.
Follow up study ideas for the "plants can see" paper: (1) artificial plant hosts with different colored leaves. (2) artificial plant hosts with leaves of various shades of green. (3) artificial plant hosts with leaves that blend into the background as much as possible. If any of those variables have an effect on the mimicry, it'll tell us *so much* about how they work; if none do, then it would suggest it's not actually sight of any kind at all.
"I just did a tab cull. I have 25 tabs open." is actually mental to me. I know it's a meme, everyone just keeps opening and not closing tabs in Chrome, but really? Chrome notoriously consumes all of your memory for even just being open. I never have more than 4 tabs open.
Used to be a massive fan of crash course back in the day. Honestly I felt like I learned more from that (and actually retained it), than most of my time at high school...well...I mean I could Def still write 3000 words on the problems and solutions for malaria but that's locked in for life sadly. Happy to find you guys
5:16 I'm going to vote yes on that! Not that you don't already have too much to do lol but that would be great! You and Ceri sitting on a cool science themed set with a green screen. Ceri with the songs/poems and you with your guitar and songs/poems! yes please!
I'm at a lil over 100 tabs open right now. I use One tab to group them together every couple weeks. I blew a stick of ram a few months ago, I think it was having 446 tabs open in one window that did it
I don't have many important things to say, but I love the podcast and wanted to leave a message and a like as support. I wanted to ask if we know of any animal (or plant now) that is capable of seeing microscopic creatures.
the way you asked how many tabs they have open…. it’s literally the question that strikes fear into my heart. so many hank…. like maybe 60+ on one window and I will have like 8 different windows with just as many tabs. so like collectively I’m in the hundreds. easily.
this is so cute! Hanging out and getting to the bottom of it! I love hanging out with everyone helping out thinking out thoughts while chilling! So cool.
Could the reason that the plant mimics another plant's leaf be that the original plant developed to have leaves suited to its environment? By mimicking it, it could better adapt to whatever ecosystem it finds itself in by copying the homework of the plant native to the niche.
It wouldn't be hard to just analyze chrome history to create the splaqued feature. Should be an easy extension...would be surprised if it doesn't already exist.
Thumb wing is a great idea, but I propose, pinkie wings, it starts as a membrane like a bats, but the animal retains the other fingers and the pinkie finger slowly recedes into the elbow and then into the shoulder forming a second set of shoulder blades under the existing ones for wing action. Flying humans ig, idk, just an idea
... have you guys seen the old adult swim cartoon show 'home movies'? The characters line up eerily with the scishow presenters. The relaxed conversational tone too.. a brilliant accident lol
Wait, if perceiving the electromagnetic spectrum is vision then surely thermoception is just perceiving infra red which means that your skin is made of eyes. Which is to say that we are all beholders
Actually! Snakes can see infrared light! So yes it counts as vision! It's mainly for if they need to hunt down food at night cause warm stuff (aka animals) are glowy to them! We can't see it, cause we have blood going into our eyes so all we would see is blood XD at least that's what my lecturer said. And also some butterflies and insects can see UV rays! But those things are dangerous so it's speculated that it's fine cause they don't live that long.
My main firefox window has 6391 tabs. My secondary firefox window has 258 tabs. My tertiary firefox window has 1 tab. It's playing Stargate SG-1 passively while I work.
Haven't watched yet, but a lot of plants are kind of like... all eye, arguably. edit. If I had to guess the way that vine mimics, I would suspect it uses shadows cast on the leaves to detect basic shape. Some other plants already use this kind of information to shift growth for a variety of reasons, but parasitic plants are especially good at it because many use it to find a host. edit. What biology has done to me is people are like "eyes complicated" and my reaction is "not really... pretty simple really."... when everything starts to look simple, you have been in biology and computer science too long. Immune systems are complicated, life forms as ecosystems is complicated, that program people have been editing without enough time for 20 years is complicated.
The best part is that Im not even suprised one bit by the plants can see. Like ya! Why the hell couldnt they? Plants EAT animals dont they? Why cant they see us too? The real question is, does sight ALSO imply higher intelligence (not like our height, but higher than otherwise)? Do vegans have to stop eating plants if they can see AND react to what they see??? I dont know Cus Im not a vegan
as far as i’m aware if the ad isn’t read out by hank or john or sam then they did not decide to put that ad and it’s like google putting ads on videos. spotify decided what ads to put and not the people making scishow
Wow do I luv Tangents! But (and it's a big but) y'all are making the same error that we all make whilst explaning evolution. Even the most sciencey of scientists have been educated to talk in terms of a design process, a gathering of data to then be used to create a tool for the job. It's a great way to visualise the process. And although this can seem to happen sometimes within a generation due to extreme conditions, I'm talking about the big million year processes that cause big limb changing magic. So this is my understanding, and I may be wrong, but here we go. Whales had legs. When the seas rose, they lost their legs leaving thigh bones under their skin, proving they were walkers once. This process was utterly random, took millions of years, and would have had millions of births of animals that were all really really pissed off at how bad they felt all the time in their watery home. And they could never find swimming trunks that fitted right. A freak was born with no legs, which happens a lot in all species. This beautiful freak was sooo good at swimming that all it's friends wanted to hang out and make babies with them. Whales. This however does not make a very long video or conversation. But I truly believe that if we are to combat alternative education becoming the standard science education, we need to just explain evolution as the random, boring, non magical dice roll it is. Have I told you how much I love SciShow Tangents? Ta tarr!
I'm not sure what I liked more: Ceri's poem or Ceri's delivery of the poem while barely able to contain her giddy smile.
I am listening to this podcast for years and I saw your comment and I was confused, then I had the revelation. It's Ceri... Not Sarry (short for Sarah).
WOW.
@@hypergalacticnoodles 😅😂I feel you. I was also very surprised, the first time I saw it written out.
It's short for Ceridwen (a Welsh name, iirc). She talked about it on the show once. I think it's a really cool name!
@@wesseldevries3 if it is then it should definitely be pronounced Kerry. Welsh is very strict with its pronunciation
Poems deserve their own Shorts/TikTok

Hell, yes!!! Reboot Schoolhouse Rock!
I would definitely watch that, perhaps a 5 day a week show and each day touches a different subject
Great idea...I just fear some giant corp owns the copyright.
Wonderful poem by Ceri! I think "Metabolic Extravagance" would be a great band name.
I love this podcast so much but I'm autistic so I say all the weird stuff I've learned from watching every single episode of this podcast dozens of times. I want to be a greatly successful and knowledgeable science communicator.
How is it that these science poems haven't been published as a book!
I love the idea of poetry about science for kids. That is the best idea ever!!
Few things could be better than a schoolhouse rocks revival with you all at the helm.
I just saw a post about the ogre-faced spider on tumblr yesterday followed with a picture of Sonic saying "well that's stupid"
That poem needs to be illustrated in the style of Eric Carle. 💚

At some point I would appreciate a book of these poems.

Dragons with arms and wings are definitely just insects

I feel called out 😳 I have well over 100 tabs open on Chrome app on my cellphone 😂
Might I suggest the "OneTab" plugin... when the tabs get too much, collapse them all into one window to look at later.
I'm at a lil over 100 tabs open right now. I use One tab to group them together every couple weeks. I blew a stick of ram a few months ago, I think it was having 446 tabs open in one window that did it
holy moly!
Ogre-faced spider! My favorite spider. They're so weird even as spiders go.
Ceri's poems are the best. Have the poems ever available as a book in p4A?
Sci show kids spin-off/ school house rock would be amazing.
This podcast is a gem, good work.
That poem 😍 School House Rock 🤘 and the personal attack of the tabs 😵
Everything about this episode was fantastic!

Best part of watching the video is background pets 😊
I want this Chrome report too!
Yes, please.
I have 149 tabs open in 7 very well organized windows
that's impressive!
@@SciShowTangents My friends prefer the word "sickening" but I'm glad you agree with me!
SCHOOL HOUSE ROCK REVAMPED! I'm here for it! 😂😂😂😂. Who else but complexly would make a 10/10 banger?!?!?! With good research to back it up.
But Hank and John def have to do a couple songs each season.
That poem was damn good, thank you Ceri!
0:21 Thanks for the cute hello to start my day with. 😄

I'm all the way in for scishow rhymes and songs!
that was an amazing poem
Ceri should TOTALLY be hired by Schoolhouse Rock for a science series!!! (while still working at Complexly)
It wouldn't be hard to just analyze chrome history to create the splaqued feature. Should be an easy extension...would be surprised if it doesn't already exist.
School house rock ( ft. Scishow tangents. ) I'm here for it

It's like herd mentality for plants
Chrome Splacked! Petition this on Twi..... nope, stop that thought, nevermind. 🙄
Proud to be a hu-Mans.
I'm totally here for Chrome Splakt
Only weird things have both wings and arms? Like insects?
I'm always on youtube. It's fun.
Oh god i have 108 tabs open on my work computer. On my phone the apps give up once you reach 100 so i have no idea....
Doing a tab cull and still having 25 is a mokd
Can we show plants a view of the galaxy in the spectrum that they "see"
Look up Tom Lum's short Too Many Tabs, Chrome Splacked already exists
If I don't get a modern schoolhouse rock for baby nerdfighters now I'm gonna be sad.
i'll see what i can do! - sam
I genuinely cannot leave tabs open when I'm not using them it bothers me
Also reboot Liberty's kids. But in different places.
I just did a cull as well, 31 tabs.
But it's Opera so I may have those stats buried in there somewhere.

There are microbes that can see, so I wouldn't exactly call it advanced, it pretty primary tbh.
this teacher has 35 tabs with 2 windows
I have a whole 6 tabs.
I wish I had 60k tabs open at one time.
Just to keep the theme alive I refuse to watch any other episode of this podcast and will only listen to the audio version :)
... I have 805 tabs open across 18 windows.
wudup!

You get an ability and reproduce with it.
Pregnant nerd watching this 2 years late lol
Re the Butt Fact, I could speculate it had something to do with sensory input via the spinal column instead of the brain, but yeah...why?
