Walney Island Beach and Foraged Sea Beet Toasties. Also Rocks. Lots of Rocks.

- A pleasant walk along the beach at Walney Island in Cumbria; rather a lot of uninformed goggling at pretty rocks, and to end the day, a delicious foraged sea beet toastie!
This is one of several videos recorded during a week-long visit to Cumbria in September 2023

I like to think that Eva's barking is just a dog translation of whatever you are saying for the benefit of your many canine subscribers.
❤
Lol! I love that idea.
Eva Shrimp; Dog geologist
Eva seems to enjoy these longer walks.
Running on flat sand like this is her favourite because usually even short grass slows her down a bit
@@AtomicShrimpaww little legs 😅
As do I
Entire beach full of "bitesize" rocks? Evas feverdream? She's so adorable!
Live long and prosper.
[Should be an emoji for this.]
Mean it..... ♥
Mind your teeth though Eva.
Perhaps Mike could go bury a few tennis balls instead.
Or golf balls, indeed.
Ok, I'm going to shutup now...
Good night everyone.
As soon as I saw the title, I thought:
'That's a heck of a walk from Dorset!'
Lovely video, as always, Mike. Always fun to see Eva (possibly the happiest little dog I have ever seen) 'rescuing' rocks, or just enjoying being. I'm not a dog person, being very allergic to them, but I do like Eva. She's probably the perfect dog for you, as she obviously is happy with life, and enjoys being out and about.
I've only been to Walney Island once, in the early 1990's, and the weather was what my late mother would have referred to as:
"Wild and Wooly." It was quite beautiful, actually.
Thankfully, you all had a nice day for it.
Thanks again.
Nice one. 👍👍👍
If you want to catch Razor Clams (really delicious), you'll need to bring a pack of bog standard kitchen salt. If you pour this into the burrow, the clam will emerge from it. Grab the shell, and pull gently - if you just yank it, there's always the chance that you will either pull the clam completely out of it's shell , or tear the poor thing in half, neither of which you want. Just pull steadily. It's astonishing just how strong a little creature like that can be.
Eventually, it will come free. Be careful of the shells - they can cut you, as they are quite thin. Razor clams are best cooked in their shells in the ashes of a fire. Always ensure that where you take them from is not near industry or human habitation - the same is true of most, if not all, bivalve molluscs.
I have been wonderering for some time about Eva´s strange behavior. 🐕❓ But now I think I found an explanation: It seems to me that Eva behaves like a hunting dog, the kind that´s searches for prey and barks to tell the hunter where to look. 🐇 Since you hunt for rocks , fossiles and pebbles, that´s the game she is searching for. So she barks at pebbles.
I think Eva barking is like Doctor Who's Sonic Screwdriver. You point it at things and something is supposed to happen.
@@AtomicShrimpWhat is her breed?
@@artistknownaslisa2850 Unknown - we think probably a mix of something like a rat terrier, and something like a whippet or Italian greyhound
@@AtomicShrimp Ohh okay. Thanks. Whatever she is, she's adorable.
I think she barks at rocks like most ratting dogs would bark at mice, rats, rabbits or voles they have hunted and dug out out of a burrow.
I moved to the UK about a year ago. I always learn something new about the local flora, fauna, and geography from the videos on this channel - and when I go out and about and recognize the things around me, it makes me feel more at home. Thanks Mike!
lucky you! i would love to move over there.. mainly Scotland though.
Welcome to the UK ☺.
So nice of you and Jenny to accompany Eva on HER holiday. 🤗
Another lovely interesting video. Great to see Eva enjoying herself so much. She cracks me up.
There is nothing quite as joyful as a dog, playing catch. It makes the day lighter.
And Eva is actually good with bringing the toy back! Most dogs I've had will chase the item, get about 3/4ths of the way back to you, and then juke to the side and beckon you to chase them! Or they just drop it halfway back to you. I give them an A for effort anyways 😂
She only has tiny legs, but I'd bet she'd thrash me at the 100 metres.
Who's your money on?
[Eva 😘 ]
Hey Mike.
Ever thought about taking Eva to a golf course ⛳?
She'd maybe find all the lost balls, might be a small fortune in it for you.
yap yap 😅
So wholesome 😊

I get from your syntax that you may be American?
No sligh, I'm just interested in people that I meet, on the street, park , online...

Eva is so true to her breed, she loves digging holes. Such a happy sight.😊
What breed is Eva? She really does love her rock games and her holes!!
Eva just cracks me up. She is such a bundle of joyous energy. ❤
What a delight. Eva is in amazing shape given her advancing doggie years, it must be all that cheese and rock barking. Loved the mention of Map Men too, and the toasties looked amazing.
The excitement around the ten minute mark when finding two interesting stones is why I continue to watch your videos every day, it makes me happy!
Eva is having so much fun! I grinned from ear to ear lol. ❤
That toasty looked delicious too!
I hope that by the time I reach your life stage that, despite being blunted by a dull job and the pressure of societal conformity, I will still be as curious about the world as you 😊
That's my local beach! Roanhead beach is nearby and very different. You can see the isle of Man, and on a good day you can even see the top of Snowdonia.
It’s my local beach also!
@@sdrrshock5594 a bit damp there today.
Anyone else up for a weekend tomato paste bender??
✌☮
You can use a 1/2 pence piece to distinguish calcite from quartz when you're at the beach. Calcite can just about get damaged and chiselled by a copper penny, but quartz needs a steel nail to easily make a mark on it.
The youth of today are on the hard stuff now - Tomato puree. I've seen them outside my local Pizza restaurant trying to score a 12 ounce... sorry, inch deep pan.
im a bit ill at the moment, but seeing Eva having such a great time truly makes me feel better
I think you went there mainly for Evas enjoyment, at least that's what I'll believe because it gives me joy.
Eva is lucky to have you two for her ‘mum & dad’
That gun emplacement is a neat little structure. It's still doing a public service, giving the youths somewhere to sneak away to that they can't accidentally burn down.
Hoped you liked our lovely beach Mr A Shrimp, would have said hello as i am from walney myself and also a long time sub to channel , pleased you liked our tiny island :)
Just a few mile south of where I live, Whitehaven.
Also for razor clams around these parts, they are not so much keyhole shaped (at least not that ive ever seen in my 30 odd years of collecting them) more an slightly sunken diamond shape.
At 3:22 you walk past several holes, also they tend to sit be around the first third "up" on the beach from the low water mark.
If you time the tides correctly just as the tide is coming back in and flowing over their holes they tend to come out of the sand of their own accord and as the tide dampens the vibrations of your footsteps (which they react to) they wont sink back down and you can just pick them out of the sand.
You videos fill me with such joy; I've been watching for years, but I still never fail to get excited whenever I spy a new upload. Thank you for sharing your interests, Mike! Hello from the Pacific Northwest. :)
The iron rich rocks surrounding Barrow in Furness is the primary reason for the shipyard being there, you would have driven past the dock museum, which is a very interesting short visit detailing the local history and geology.
Puppers and I love the greater involvement of Eva in these adventures! Her happy yips punctuate your general musings wonderfully!
Geology rocks but geography is where it's at
i like the idea someone was just hanging out in the bunker making a pasta sauce or somethin', seems like a chill way to spend your time.
Maybe cooking foraged sea beet.
Haven't you heard of the underground tomato sniffing scene? They are into the heavy stuff if they are mainlining pureé! 🍅
🎣🍅🌶️🧄
I love how YT’s auto-generated captions translate Eva’s barking into “foreign” …… which I suppose is basically correct.
Did you visit the Roundhouse at Biggar? Its a very doggy friendly cafe. There used to be a giant slag bank that ran along the coast on the mainland. Most of it was removed in the 80s to make building material for shopping malls and motorways. There is a small section left its now covered in grass and walking trails. You need to visit Roanhead beach the large fishing pools behind it are where the iron ore was extracted.
"Jesus Christ, Shrimp. They're minerals!"
~ Eva, probably
😂
i think you would enjoy a trip to sunderland, there are some interesting formations around the coast and foraging is great
In the East Riding of Yorkshire, particularly in Flamborough and Bempton, you can find old cottages and houses which are made from tide washed rocks like the ones you have looked at in this video although much bigger.
Most of them have been painted white with, I guess, lime or something that gives the wall a level of water resistance.
Also, you mention that the grey rocks are sandstone. I have only come across "Yorkshire stone," which is a golden yellow / brown stone which, when stuck, will break in sheets. many houses and stone walls are built with it, particularly in Bradford, Skipton, and surrounding areas. When you get into Leeds and North Yorkshire like Ilkley, houses tend to be built with red brick, and the stone walls are a more blue colour.
Definitely a good place to be an inquisitive dog.
I keep thinking poor Eva is the world's most amazing unknown archeologist, always finding buried civilizations with her keen sense of smell, digging as far as her little legs will allow, then calling to her dad for help. Unfortunately, her father likes to play fetch, and gets distracted with rocks at the bottom of the hole, so no one will ever know what discoveries she's made. Also, where are all the people? Other than private beaches, I've never seen a beach here in the U.S. that wasn't covered with humans. Thanks so much for sharing your adventure. Take care, be well
Aah that is why I have lived and continue to live in uk, especially around north england and Wales (Anglesey especially)
Silly Shrimp. That rock is red because it's a heart. LOL // Eva is so cute. How old is she, and what breed?
A truely beautiful video.
It brought me right back to being a boy with my father. Dad and I would go on walks for hours and he would explain about the rocks and the sea life and we would bring our dog with us too.
My father shared the same wonderful curiosity and the same calm and knowledgeable way about him as you do.
Dad passed two years ago and I hadn't cried until I watched this video. The memories came flooding back and the tears were relentless.
They were not tears of sadness, more tears for the love Dad and I shared and how lucky I am to have had such a wonderful father.
Thank you Mike.
To us it might seem like Eva’s just going “Yip yip yip”, but to all the dog listeners she’s providing useful guidance on the quality of the local geology
The iron ore deposits in the region that you see in some rocks was actually the catalyst for the industrialisation of the whole region, particularly shipbuilding. It brought tens of thousands of workers in from Ireland and Scotland and was at one point producing more iron than anywhere else in the world.
I'm not sure if you know already, but Walney Island is the real life location of the fictional Island of Sodor from the Railway Series (Thomas the Tank Engine).
I could look at rocks all day! There's something very satisfying and wholesome about looking at them. The variety of colours and patterns is superb!
We have a most unlikely beach near where I live. There's a big water outlet with a deep channel and mostly brown silty water. The beach is partly stones, but when they demolished nearby brick factories they just pushed them on to the beach. It's a brick collector's paradise! Also industrial lumps of stuff of nightmarish colours.
I enjoyed the blue cheese rock or ‘roquefort’ as I coined it
Darn it. I wish I had thought of that pun at the time!
Absolutely beautiful countryside..
I hope your holiday was fantastic for you. Eva DEFINITELY had an amazing time.
As a kid in Scotland, hiking hills, we used to gather quartz and quite literally bash rocks together as they are piezoelectric generating….
I haven't tuned into your vlogs for a wee while as I enjoy binge watching them.
Really disappointed I missed this one as I live on Walney Island, yourself, Jenny & Eva would have been welcome to call in for a brew.
On behalf of us Walneyites thank you for picking up rubbish.
The sea beet & Lancashire cheese would have lended itself very well to a Spanakopita style Greek Pie.
Thank you also for featuring my home town in this vlog.
Could you do a video about Eva(not sure if I'm spelling that right) she's such a good puppers.
It's funny, that beach is "normal" to me as just about every beach here is full of those type of rocks and long sandy stretches. It's crazy how similar the north of England is/Scotland to NS
Map Men.
Also I think you would get along well with Gavin Webber, the cheese man from Australia. Might have some interesting conversations
Up next on atomic shrimp: the gritty reality of tomato purée addiction amongst today's youth. A brave man finds evidence of a grevious crime.
AS, you need to look up Ferdinand Cheval and his house: Le Palais idéal. He was a French Postman who built a house out of stones and pebbles be collected on his routes.
Would you please let me know what program you used for the rock images? We also love watching Eva playing and hearing her happy voice. It helps us not miss our lost girl as badly.
The star of the show ,-our- beloved Eva 😂.
13:36 The segment assembling a wall of rocks on computer has a "Vision On" vibe to it. I think it's the combination of the music and speeded up animation.
I can't tell who is the more excited by rocks, you or Eva 🐕
Why are we using windfarms, when we have such strong ocean currents duck generators' is the way we should be going.
hi i was born on walney at far southend farm bk in the 50s my father had it as a chicken farm i rember it burning down when i was very young it was never rebuilt i keep meaning to have a road trip bk and film it with my drone might do it this year
Hmm rocks, Om nom nom.
Sorry im highly intoxicated on tomato puree.
It might be interesting to show a few particular rocks at various stages in the tumbling process. Maybe: Initial appearance. After 1 day. 2 days. 3 days. 1 week. 2 weeks. 3 weeks. 1 month. 2 months. 3 months. 6 months. 1 year. Or something like that. Just a suggestion. Cheers :-)
Just wanted to say i loved your virtual stone wall, i screenshot and now have it as my phone wallpaper so thanks😊
Oh man, what you doing up here on my island Mike? Actually blew my mind when I saw this this morning!
Just got round to watching this now, always loved that house up Abbot's Wood, didn't realise it was available as a rental!
If I owned it, I'd want to live in it, not rent it out!
1:13 it’s a beach with cobbles, and rock pools…and a hole!! Good doggo 🐶
Doggo 🐶 is certainly making up for her time stuck in the 🚗 on the long drive up.
10 hour drive from Dorset. M6 was like a car park.
@@AtomicShrimpBeen there done that
Funny you could nearly be in Cape Town in the time it takes to drive from Dorset to Cumbria 😮
I'm just wondering. Is it possible that no other human has touched the rocks you picked up and looked at. Based on where they are and how many of them there are.
I've had some luck in the past honing dull holiday cottage knives on the base of a ceramic mug (the unglazed part). YMMV depending on just how dull they are!
Three days though I try to pack something vaguely sharp in the car just in case
I went out and bought a decent kitchen knife the next day. I'll keep it aside for next time we go away - we always go self-catering
I absolutely love your channel Mike without doubt one of the very best and most interesting on UA-cam thank you for all you bring us.
It’s very sweet that you always give Jenny the nicer looking one
You know it will be an extraordinarily good video when you hear Eva's friendly "hello" within the first few seconds. 💛
As a fairly useless aside, this island is the one part of the UK that doesn't exist in Thomas the Tank Engine lore, as Sodor's Vicarstown is in the same spot as Walney's Vickerstown
I found that interesting. But I'm weird?
I love seeing Eva happy
Those rocks look a lot like Maine beach rocks.
Oooooooooo, favourite part of the country up by the lakes, Furness peninsula has a special place in my heart, if ya get further up the coast there's a beautiful ( and in my opinion, the best) 15" gauge railway that runs from Ravenglass on the coast inland to Eskdale. Beautiful journey with stunning scenery.
I do enjoy your videos because of the variety of topics: Interesting places to walk, plants and rocks to gather, things to cook and eat, Eva's antics and occasional treats, and of course, everybody's favourite, Weird Stuff in a Sealed Metal Container.
That looks like a beautiful house. Full of cosy rustic charm, but with convenient modern kitchen and bathing facilities inside - comfortable living room and sleeping. An excellent base for a holiday taking in both the South Lakes, and the coast of Morecambe Bay and Walney Island. Lots to do and see right nearby (Furness Abbey is a short pleasant walk through the woods) and this was a smashing, snug and welcoming place to come back to at the end of a full day of activities.
That was nearly as good as being there, enjoying seeing Eva enjoying being a dog. How old is Eva now? I ask because we have a little rescue, Holly, who is very similar (only brown), and her distinguished grey bits are very like Eva's. We don't know how old she is as she was a Spanish street dog, but would guess she might be about Eva's age😊. Anyway, thanks for such a lovely video.... much appreciated.
I think the collage you made of the rocks would make great floor tiles - the variety was just lovely.
And that beach - what a great mix of both rocks and sand.
Eva is a charming little bundle of energy as always. ❤ Is there a specific area of knowledge you'd like to expand on right now? I'm always curious to hear from a fellow info sponge.
Uhhmm, much variety.
Well, thats Britain for ypu.
And Thats Entertainment.
Yeah. Good night all.
In a pinch, you can sharpen knives on the bottom of a ceramic mug and hone them on the back of another knife (or whatever). It's not ideal, but it's a noticeable improvement.
PRINCESS EVE!!!! Hi baby girl!!! I love when you bring her to the beach and she barks at the rocks!!!
Also i lick rocks. You can tell alot about rocks with your tongue. My friend taught me alot
"Lancashire is one of those crumbly cheeses"
It is! Unless it's not. Some varieties are Creamy (a more solid, non-crumbly texture). And Lancashire is a mild cheese ... unless it's Tasty (which is usually creamy in texture and stronger/sharper in flavour). It's all a good cooking/melty cheese.
Following an incident with some disgusted hikers, my husband and I now privately refer to sea kale as Hit**r’s Cabbage. That is, we no longer shout “Sea Kale” loudly on shingle beaches whilst waving to each other.
24:58 Great to see a classic cartoon dong. The classics never die. Interestingly enough people have been drawing cartoon wieners for just about as long as we have been drawing. Like I said, the old one's are the best :-D
It was quite a relief to finally see the inevitable crudely drawn willy. I was worried the local youths were guilty of dereliction of duty
So many stones deposited by the Lake District glaciers. Just south of your staring point recently unearthed a 20k year old red dear skull complete with antlers. You can see the grey sedimentary soft mud spilling into the sea after storms.
The island was recently breached for the first time, literally cut in half by high tides around the barn you noted. In future Walney may become two separate islands without defence works. The local ironworks "slag bank" to the North provides the honeycomb slag. Foulney and Roa islands are worth exploring if you revisit.
When Eva comes up to look at your rock fair play suggests you should use her vocabulary "Wow! Wow! Lookat I found! Wow! Wow!"
Hey @Atomic Shrimp,
Can you make the rock wall available as a .PNG for us to download?
Thanks.
Lovely to see you up north, looking forward to seeing where else you visited. Eva having a great time on the beach, making my doggy Toast jealous ❤ great video as usual.
23:41 i think i can just make out "DANGER KEEP OFF" on the roof of the bunker. Wonder if that because of the drop or a structural issue?
The nearby island of Piel has an interesting history of the 'Kings and Knights' of the island, the king being the landlord of the pub - one of 7 buildings on the island.
This put me in mind of a time in my life when I had quite a lot of beet greens available to me. I would do something very similar with them. Cooked in butter with a bit of chopped onion, a splash of balsamic vinegar to add the extra liquid needed, and once it was cooked and the liquid evaporated I would pour 2 scrambled eggs over top and make a sort of omelet/frittata which I topped with parmesan. Highly recommend! Any time I see someone use an air fryer, it makes me want to own one, but there is just not enough space in my kitchen. That crunch, though!!
I don't tend to take my own knives when I travel self catering, but I do take a small knife sharpener. Makes life better for me while away and leaves it nice and sharp for the next guest.
Wander how Mr 🍤 decides which is the correct rock to pick up and throw for doggo 🐶 and also would doggo be prosecuted if she took a rock back to the 🚗
I know I need to get out more.
Haha i love your "spice rack".
For the last 7 days i was tenting and i had much fun preparing meals on my burner :) i brought spices and was thinking about how to improve my set^^ how to make it lighter and smaller
Walney Island which according to the geographical description in the rev. W. Awdry's books is the island of sodor as it is the only true island between the England mainland and the Isle of man .
Also Barrow in Furness is the town where I was born and spent my younger years.
A great advert for an area not well visited by a lot of tourists who come to Cumbria, most of whom prefer to head for the main towns such as Bowness, Ambleside or Keswick. The south coast of Cumbria may not have the mountains and the rugged views of The Lake District, but it still has a lot to offer. And, no, I don't work for the Cumbrian Tourist Board, I once was fortunate to live in that part of the world.
Use the bottom of your tea cup to sharpen knives when in need. It works really well, just clean its bottom of exposed ceramique ring every couple of minutes, you can of course use other ceramique that are available to you. Love your videos, they are so varied and the weird stuff in a can are probably my favorite but the cooking ones are a close second... God bless and lots of love from Norway.
Edit: Try a thin layer of mayo on the outside if you want really crispy toasties. It tastes even better than butter to me.
Ooh, that was some rather risqué graffiti in the gun emplacement.
Not complaining, I like to see that young people are still enjoying the old structures, that they still have some use.
