+Orpheas Nestos Well it actually depends in which city, for example zurich has alot of limestone in its water but it's drinkable. I prefer bottled water but if you think that it's a waste of money of course you can drink tap water...

water in zürich is of exceptionally high quality as the sea it is sourced from has already almost drinkable water. it has just the right amount of minerals in it to make it tasty without getting gross.

I was born in Switzerland and never thought of the country as very special. I left at a young age and live now still far away. I travelled the world . met loads of people rating Switzerland as the most beautiful country they know. today 20 years later I'm convinced. I'm a French guy, born in Lyon, raised in Lille. I traveled a lot, lived a year in NYC, where I met my GF, who's actually from Zh.
After 6 years of a long distance relationship, I moved to Zh 2 years ago to work and live here with her. We now have our own apartment in Thalwil (a small but really nice village alongside the lake) with a balcony and the lake of Zh for a view, 1 minute away from our building actually.
Don't mistake me, I love my country, I love its culture, its History. I think it is one of the country (if not the only one) that offers the most beautiful and varied landscapes, with a food culture, art culture, historical culture and all that (Italy comes really close).
But Gosh do I love living here! Mountains and lakes are gorgeous, people are respectful and polite, the streets are clean and well-kept. Yes, things are expensive, but salaries are also high, which is a luxury when you travel abroad, because everything seems so cheap.
There's a respect for traditions and yet an appeal for modernity.
I always compare Switzerland with Japan. A western Europeanized version of it.
When I go back to visit my family or friends, as soon as I step in Paris, where I have to transfer to another train to reach Lille, I am always saddened to see what is becoming of this city, and of the general state of my country in general.
I am in love with Zürich, really. The only other city I would say I love as much (for complete different reasons) is New-York.

As someone who grew up in Zurich and who has lived here all my life hearing and seeing people buy water is just not at all understandable to me. Someone has pointed out that our water "has the highest cocaine content in the world"; yes we do but that's not the drinking water. I understand that people who didn't grow up here are scared to drink tap water without filtering and boiling all hell out of it, but that's not necessary here. We have fountains everywhere in the cities that all provide clean well drinkable water straight from the well. We also have some of the best infrastructure in the world and with that comes very clean water. Anyone interested in the sewage system and water cleaning should really read into it. So instead of always pointing out the bad things about Switzerland, perhaps people should also look at the good sides.
Yes Zurich is hella expensive for people who don't live and earn their money here but with the high income and the great infrastructure everything gets evened out. Anyone who has ever been in one of the bigger cities in Switzerland like Zurich will have noticed how clean everything is. We also have an exceptionally low crime and unemployment rate and an extremely low rate of homelessness. Infact the only way you can land out on the streets is if you refuse all help from the government and choose to live on the streets yourself.
When can people stop bashing Switzerland?

    • @jamaly77

Just to say: *ALDI and LIDL are German brands........that's why is quite ''cheap''* ...... and because of the exchange rates......
When you go to *''Swiss brands'' like Migros and Coop* are the *prices quite different.*
    1 CHF - 1.0104 USD (ungefähr)
Those .0104 are very 'important' even if it's just .0002 or others. It makes a lot of difference
Generally is Switzerland an ''expensive'' country! - train tickets, foods, flats, health care/insurance, ...
When somebody says: '' Switzerland is cheap''' that's....not...true.

However, I will say one thing, Zurich, from first sight, seems like a very beautiful, clean city. I wish the American cities were as clean and beautiful as Zurich. But, then again, Zurich doesn’t have the bred of animals we have here along with the outrageous crime.

These prices are very optimistic, and at times very minimalist. I live in Zurich. Even outside of the city centre that is pretty optimistic for rent. You mentioned that going out for a party costs 50 bucks, but assuming George is a single man with time and a social life, eating out and drinking costs (which have not been included in the assessment) would also pile on.

Good but you have forgotten the high taxes you have to pay every year. For an income of 3000 swiss francs / month it seems like 4500 swiss franc each year. its different on every city or village in Switzerland. so please add to this costs CHF 375 or more. In my city you have to pay 450 swiss francs every month with this small income :(

  • @TheJStoney

Anyone not familiar with real expenses of living in Switzerland, take this video with a grain of salt. The numbers don’t equate to a nice lifestyle at all! Insurance on average is double what’s stated and is getting more expensive. Taxes were not included and for one, the Swiss franc and the dollar isn’t 1to1 and wasn’t when the video was posted as I track the rates due to personal finance. There’s so much more but you get the drift.

George must be the most frugal guy in the Western hemisphere; your calculations are basically correct but it takes an enormous amount of self discipline to always pick up the cheapest option. And if you relax a bit in only one respect (e.g. rent,or going out, or see a doctor), your monthly costs will easily leap to over CHF/USD 3000. I think it's safer to put the minimum monthly costs at CHF 3000. But you can easily spend doubly as much without doing anything special.
