I saw 3985 with my dad during the early 90s. There was an interstate bridge being repaired near the local sportsmans club where my dad was a member. The UP assigned a man to oversee the area (speed restriction and such). After a few days my dad and some other club members invited him to use the nice picnic tables under a big oak tree on club property. The work went on all spring and into summer. Eventually the railroad employee told several of us that a steam engine was going to be passing through in a few days. When the day arrived we all got permission to go down way close to the tracks and he radioed the train to slow down so we could get a really nice photo run by. Ever since then, 3985 is my favorite steam engine. Great video and still overjoyed at the news that she will steam again and from my home state no less! Thanks for this!

Many fond memories of UP 3985! Saved from the scrapping torch, restored to operation, disguised as two other locos, a PR run with the APL stacks, and the GREATEST SHOW on the RBBBC train! Quite a second life! Too bad the UP didn't want to give it the rebuild it gave 844 & 4014. Hope the Heritage group gives it a great third life!

I just love the 3985 and I am looking forward to when she steams proud and strong again as she deserves. Does anyone know whether she will steam under the UP or some other flag when fully restored to service?

3985 is not owned by the union Pacific anymore! She was donated to the Railroad heritage of Midwest America. She’s now based in Illinois where she’s going through her 1472 day inspection to get her back into running condition.
