      Hello Erin, this was very informative, but I'm having an issue with a drop cap that I need help with. Whenever I view my document with the drop cap on my computer, the drop cap and paragraph look fine. But whenever I upload it to Drive and view it there as a Google Doc, the drop capped letter is on a page all by itself, followed by the paragraph on the next page. When I view it as a Word document from Drive on my phone, the drop capped letter is on one line, and the rest of the paragraph directly underneath it. Is this a problem with Drive? Please let me know when you can. Thank you

    This and other tutorials don't say what to do if the DROP CAP is grayed out. It's no help if you can't get to the function. In my case I'm working inside a text box.

      Thank you for watching! Unfortunately, it's not possible to add a drop cap to a text box. One workaround is to put a big letter in a separate text box and then layer it over the text box with the content (after indenting that content as necessary to accommodate the big letter). Best of luck!

    I followed your directions exactly and it keeps pushing my Drop Cap above my paragraph - it won't give me the 3 lines. I have been trying for hours to get this so that it looks like this... It just looks like a big letter above my paragraph instead of a drop cap - even though I clicked insert drop cap and dropped (not in line) and the selected 3 lines... I tried going the text wrap route and it's greyed out :(

      Thank you for watching my video. I'm really sorry to hear that you are having trouble creating the drop cap. If you think there might be a glitch in your software, I encourage you to contact Microsoft support so they can help you identify the issue. Best of luck!

    In my windows 11, MS word 365, when I go to the insert ribbon, I do not have a text selection area as you show. I have all the other areas but no text area. Very frustrated.

      That sounds like a frustrating issue. I just checked my copy of Word 365 on Win 11 and the Text group in the Insert tab is still there. You may want to right-click on your ribbon and select "Customize the Ribbon." From there, you can select the Insert tab on the panel on the right side to see if the group has been removed. If so, you can add it back in from that dialog box. Good luck!

    I have an image beside the text and using drop cap makes the first letter move behind the image while the rest stay beside. How to fix this?

    • @erinwrightwriting
      @erinwrightwriting  9 місяців тому

      That is a great question! Unfortunately, images next to drop caps do obscure the drop caps. However, one workaround is to temporarily move the image (set to any of the Layout Options other than "In Line with Text") and then place your cursor in front of the drop cap and press your Tab key a number of time to make enough space. You can then drag the image back into position. I wish you all the best with your Word project!

    Why does DropCap option blurs? How to fix it?

      Thank you for watching! I haven't encountered a blurry drop cap, so I'm afraid I don't have any specific advice. Is it blurry on screen or only when printed?

    I don't use MS Word any more, but I have used it a lot in the past, and I would like to point out that there is a second, entirely different way to create drop caps in some versions of MS Word. That is, to insert your initial cap as "Word Art." Does that feature still exist? In fact, I think there's a third way, I forget the exact name, but it allows an important feature of typesetting which is that the text aligns itself as close the letter as possible. For example, if you wanted to use a huge letter "A" as the first letter, and make it 10 lines high, the problem would be the huge gap between the "A" and the smaller text. There is a feature in MS Word for inserting an image which will let the text in each line come as close to the letter A as it can go. But I forget what this feature is called.

    Is there a way to keep your Drop Cap for all the chapters in a document? Mine keep defaulting so I do it over and over for each chapter that I format .... I do book layout :)

      Thank you for watching! I’m not familiar with a way to have Word automatically create a drop cap at the start of each new chapter. Perhaps you can add drop caps to filler text in a template that you could then reuse?
