Chadwick Boseman was great in Ma Rainey, but Anthony Hopkins gave the best acting performance of 2020, hands down, and deserved the award as described. Boseman was robbed of his life, not an Oscar.
I agree, I think Hopkins more than deserved it (though I admit I haven’t seen every nominated performance yet)! I’m glad that people don’t seem to be directing their disappointment at him.
I do think, however, that the Academy has a history of being pretty all over the place with its award-giving-so I would understand why Boseman’s family and fans would get their hopes up. I would have been very happy to see him win as well.
@@RemmeASMR Agreed. And I picked and expected Boseman to win, and as you described, it would have been a fitting tribute. But when they announced Hopkins, I was like ah yeah, that really was deserved. Or perhaps “also deserved” would describe it best.

Ohhh, I agree! Thanks for reminding me. I just couldn’t get into it-even being a fan of Gary Oldman, even having recently watched & read about Citizen Kane, and even having toured Hearst Castle twice.
I turned it off after about 30 minutes. Clearly it didn’t leave an impression, because I plumb forgot to discuss it at all!
