Just wanted to say thanks for the series man. Really great way of explaining everything.

looks perfect to me :-) ( I always mess up my ASL on the breakturn, getting hook out, wheels out, flaps out, break ... )
the "thing" of the boat where you try to allign your pathvector to is called "the crotch"
also, when I do a Case I or III, I always like to turn Radar off and in stead have my FCS page up right MFD and my ADI on left MFD,
because the alpha indicator is mostly not shown on the HUD anymore, the FCS page shows continuous your updated alpha, together with the E-bracket it helps to have correct angle, for which, as you demonstrated already, a min. 7.5 to 8.5 alpha is necessary to catch the wire with your hook.
Using the ICLS can make life a bit easier, but then again one gets always tempted to start chasing the indicators.
again, very good tutorial ! I just love your tutoring method, calm, taking the time to explain, highlighting the do's and don'ts and staying focussed in your explanation. Very big difference with those on YT who try to get a tutorial done under 10mins, start babbeling about anything and everything they see and do and then forget about the core essence.
Good job ! Keep those vids coming !

Back again and yeah, this really helped me clean up my approach and final, etc. It’s still rough and ugly, but much less so. Now I can start to see things start to go wrong and fix them early. FPM placement really helps a lot. Much happier with my landings now and it’s even becoming fun.

This was very helpful. I wasn’t sure where to put my flight path vector so this was especially helpful.

10:3 why did you and why would you EVER fold back those mirrors? They don'T use energy and aren't in a way of anything... a question I always asked myself.

You should use your ILS as well

While you can turn the ICLS on, for a true Case 1 you really shouldn't need it. Stick to your speeds, altitudes, and fly the ball.

Mike, do you use a VR HMD for DCS ?
Also, do you use the FCU (finger control unit aka "virtual mouse") from Miles ? the speed you fly over the instruments and adjust is fast ;-)

Just TrackIR and a HOTAS with several bindings.

so does the brc changes as ship moves?how do i find it?

    • @ravagetalon

If the ship turns, yes. You can get it by checking the ship's heading from the F10 map (bear in mind that the ship's heading on F10 is in True Heading rather than Magnetic, so you'll need to take that variance into account or switch the Hornet's heading tape to True in the HSI's Data menu). You can also call inbound to the ship's ATC and when you fly overhead it should give you the BRC, but this is part of the new carrier ATC comms that are not fully implemented yet. I presume you're referring to multiplayer. In this case, reference the F10 map for the ship's heading.
For most missions, provided they're made well, the ship should always be turned into the wind.

why did they make it so hard (that's what she said) ? I mean they could have made the procedure A LOT easier instead of cramming all this stuff into the smallest possible circuit. Just let them have a long final..

For a moving airbase, which is what the carrier is, The maneuvers for the case 1 recovery were designed to enable the safe and fast recovery of aircraft. It may look convoluted, but this is actually the fastest way to do landings on the boat. Case 3 recoveries have you basically do a straight in and they're much much slower.

@@ravagetalon I understand. But I guess it's all about the steep turn then for losing speed, right? I guess you could do that turn in the downwind, too.
