  • In this episode we take a closer look at the Orphan of Kos and its Japanese name to see what nuances may have been lost in translation.

    So, it's seems that the being we fight is a manifestation made by the actual Orphan, it shares a voice actor with Gehrman, and we get dialogue from him after the Orphan is slain.
    Is the being we fight a nightmarish version of what the Orphan thinks Gehrman is? It wants to defend itself and it pulls out the scariest thing it can think of: the hunter who slaughtered everyone in the hamlet.

      That’s exactly what I think it is, Gherman was involved in whatever happened to it and it’s mother, so it manifests itself as the most horrible thing it knows, him.

      part of me also thinks it's also gehrman projecting his own self onto the orphan, and that it's his nightmare equivalent to ludwig or laurence. it's implied laurence didn't even become a fiery cleric beast, but rather a bloodletting beast, and the fire is also symbolic of his sins in old yharnam, and ofc a cleric beast bc of his position. so i think the orphan is partly symbolic of gehrman in that he sees himself as a pitiful victim of the situation. but i also love the idea and themes of what you're presenting too. there's a lot of arguments for great ones attached to infants being representations of their nightmares, like with mergo and his wet nurse potentially looking similar to a nurse that would've performed a c-section on queen yharnam, with her shrouded face and surgical knives.

    There's also the simpler association with the past.
    I've seen this sort of thing in other Japanese media. Some person or place will use older kanji in order to linguistically reinforce the idea that said thing is "of the past", either a reference to the past or else a thing literally from the past i.e. time travel related plot devices.
    It's not too different from english where we might comically say "thee" or "thou" to imply someone speaking is old or old fashioned or possibly authoritative.
    It'd be interesting to know if other items or persons are given antiquated kanji outside of the DLC areas. That old words are used in the DLC isn't surprising since the whole thing is a reference to the past. But areas in the base game using them might point in interesting directions. May imply things which were ignored or unnoticed by the church.

    That name definitely feels a lot more fitting than just Orphan.
    It also fits with the HP description/translation. But I gotta say that I'm still unsure how to feel about that. We use Blood (vials) to restore that HP. That means that all normal Yharnamites also receive the wills of dead people.
    For now I'd like to think that normally blood increases Beasthood, but with the player it's changed to this will to live thanks to the messengers linking us to the Hunter's Dream.

    • @LastProtagonist
      @LastProtagonist  3 роки тому +18

      For what it's worth, you still get "Blood Echoes" when you kill Yharnamites.

    • @yannickdewit7089
      @yannickdewit7089 3 роки тому +10

      I don't think blood vials necessarily contain the blood of the dead (just look at all the "blood saints" we come across), and that Blood Echoes only come from the dead.
      It could be that you're sharing their will to live with blood vials, and that same will transforms into something that you can use to make yourself stronger permanently.
      I do think that everyone gets the restorative functions of blood vials, but that regular yharnamites don't use them because they're too far gone.
      Otherwise other hunters would be connected to the hunter's dream as well (or their own version of it).
      I think you get the blood vials from regular enemies because everybody uses it (which started the whole scourge) not because you drain their blood yourself.
      And thinking of it, the will to live is one of our strongest instincts, which are very primal reactions.
      Wouldn't it make sense that, if you imbibe their primal instincts, you'd slowly turn primal (bestial) yourself?

    Its interesting that due to the word used for the Orphan being old, it brings along a feeling of it being an ancient orphan, or, an orphan of an old one

    Why 'Dying Will of Kos' bears so many similarities to Gehrman and even uses his sound files?

    • @Xgenstudioz777
      @Xgenstudioz777 3 роки тому +24

      Gehrman played a major role in the purging of the Fishing Hamlet and therefore holds an enormous amount of the guilt. The sobbing sound in the Orphan of Kos cutscene is the same soundbite as Gehrman’s sobbing in his rare “dreaming” dialogue, where he calls out to Laurence and Willem and begs to be unshackled from dreaming. And after defeating the OoK, regardless of whether the black baby phantom is scattered or not, the Doll has an extra dialogue where she talks about how she can hear Gehrman sleeping soundly, which he coudn't do before.
      This is less concrete, but IMO the OoK is visually pretty similar to Gehrman. Not only because they have similar faces, but also placenta weapon kind of reminds me of the Burial Blade’s cleaving edge
      In general, I think the old humanoid was created by Kos as a final guardian of the nightmare, using Gehrman as a template. The Orphan basically “imprinted” upon Gehrman, and Gehrman’s punishment in the dream is that every time he falls asleep in the Hunter’s Dream he slips into Nightmare and experiences the unimaginable trauma that the Orphan felt, of being torn from the womb broken and incomplete.

    • @Garviel-Loken
      @Garviel-Loken 3 роки тому +8

      @@Xgenstudioz777 it's also ironic that Gehrman ends up being essentially bound in two nightmares by two great ones and slain in both.
      He is represented by the Orphan of Kos, possibly because he took the third cord, as there is one on the old workshop. This act may have bound him to Kos and imprinted her with his violence and rage. Especially given the dolls dialogue after OoK is slain.
      This draws the attention of the moon presence which binds him to itself and the "dream".
      Gehrman had enough power to sustain the dream through hunting but didn't collect enough cords.
      He potentially powered the dream and the nightmare simultaneously and is relieved when one is stopped.

    I think Gehrman lead the hunt to the fishing hamlet, to hunt Kos. He was consumed by Kos and killed her from the inside. He would have left a piece of himself behind from the experience, and never be the same. It would also explain where he got his third cord

    Little late but one thing that always bugged me is if the great ones can't procreate with each other and that's why they are so unique and rare, how the hell did mother kos get knocked up? I guess that milky white skin was to much for Gehrmans mania. The orphan does have his voice. I'm kidding of course but yeah that was a huge oversight imo.
